Same problem - sometimes one of the solutions works sometimes not - really ***** - want to add one song and can't get sync to finish!
Deleting the photo cache worked for me (at least so far).
Note: It's located in ~/Pictures/{iphoto library name}/iPod Photo Cache/
In other-words, you must right-click on the iPhoto library & choose "show contents" to see the cache folder.

FWIW: the sync process would get stuck in a loop in iphotos in my case so I tried a couple of the methods mentioned earlier. Did not get these to work but could have been doing something wrong. I also wasn't to find the iPod cache in the iphoto library.
I then went into the iphoto preferences and tinkered with the import settings, meaning that I selected "no application" to the "Connecting camera opens" option. After a restart of the iPad and ensuring iTunes was up to date, I was able to sync.
Hey thanks for the great tip. I concur the option + cmd is universal for mac so thanks for that too, while I'm at it.
Thanks for tip and the clarity of your instructions. Worked perfectly for me.
Thank you for this. It fixed the problem for me.
I've been stuck for several days with this never-ending sync issue... Rebuilding the iPhoto database did the trick for me. Many tanks iClint_ You rock!
I've been haunted by this issue for years. Deleting the iPod Photo Cache folder used to work. Then I tried rebuilding the photo library, which worked a few times. Despite the fact that all these issues seemed temporary, I didn't mind as long as they worked. Sometimes I had to unsync all the photos and then resync them. But now, nothing works.
But considering how the issue seems to happen regardless of my device (it occurred on my iPhone 5 and continues to occur on my new iPhone 6), it's either iPhoto/iTunes or something corrupted inside the phone which would require a clean restore. At this point, I don't know which I dread more.
This worked for me as well. Thanks!
Rebuilding iPhoto's database worked once.
But ever since, syncing is not going through.
Tried deleting the Ipod photo cache, tried rebuilding / resetting every option on the option+CMD window in iPhoto (permissions, thumbnails, rebuilding the database again) but this had no effect.
This is probably not device related since the issue is the same with iPhone 4s and iPadmini
Upgrading to Yosemite made it worse, I think.
----------
MacbookPro 15" (2010) - Yosemite 10.10
iTunes 12.0.1.26
iPhoto 9.6
iPhone 4S iOs 8.1
IpadMini iOs 8.1
I did all of the suggested fixes, one at a time: rebuilt the iPhoto database (it took 90 minutes as I have a lot of photos), deleted the iPod cache, changed iPhoto preferences to "no application" when I connect a camera, restarted my phone, restarted i Tunes and finally it worked. I have an iMAc from mid 2010 and an iphone 6 and the latest software and updates. I did have iTunes issues when I upgraded to Yosemite and had to delete and reload iTunes to even get it working but that was earlier in the week. The key to know when it was finally going to work was when I connected my iPhone 6 and opened the Photos tab and then when the icon stopped spinning and I could check boxes and then "apply", it worked.
Thanks. This worked once I added the "include videos" click.
thanks- this tip along with using disc utility-repair permissions- solved the problem-thanks
thanks to you-Reed4 as well as leefoo23- the combo of both tips worked wonders for me!
