How to create a virtual drive of a non bootable drive ?

through which we can see the preview of the drive without clicking on the original drive.

Mac OS X (10.6.8)

You said that a DMG is a virtual drive, but the size of the DMG is depend upon the free space of our bootable drive.

For Example : If our bootable drive having 100 GB free space , then we are restricted to make a DMG of less than 100 GB.

But according to the concept of virtual drive we can make a drive of any size , it does not depend upon the size of our bootable drive.

Than how can we say that a DMG is a virtual drive.
