Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

They need to overcompensate with a solution here as this is down right embarrassing.

These are user to user Forums and the only advice we can give you is to do as you have done.

Your 'next Call' should have been your first if you come to participate in thread without reading them, and advice on offer.

Please refrain from posting unnecessary comments. I understand how the forum discussion works. After reading the first few pages of responses, and then the last, I feel I have what I need. This was an important first step in understanding the nature and scope of the issue - and it is important that I publicly count myself among the affected users. This, along with my candid thoughts on the matter should help Apple do better in the future. I will post an update about how or if the issue is resolved.

Wow, you do have an attitude! Well here's to you.

Good Luck, because posters like you get very little help, especially if they don't bother reading threads. 😝

Oh, and please refrain from posting unnecessary comments.

Much appreciated.

Peter, you have been told repeatedly both in comments that remain and especially in those that have been deleted: your presence in this thread is disruptive and unwelcome. You needlessly antagonize posters and even insult people, as shown above. We have every right to post about our experiences. Maybe you could address yourself to some other thread where you are able to make a positive contribution, because you have proven utterly incapable of doing so here.

Update: (Sorry for the delay):

Took my Apple 27" iMac with a bad tilt mechanism to a local (Orange County, CA) Apple Store on Labor Day. I had called on Friday for an appointment. Supposedly the part was in stock there. When I arrived Monday I was told they'd have to order the part and repair would take 3 to 5 days. I have to wonder if they ran out over the weekend? The people I dealt with were all very polite and courteous. No one would admit that this is a common problem with the iMac 27", though they all seemed to know it happens. I left the computer for repair and got the Work Authorization via email.

Interestingly, the Work Authorization was written for two 923-00151 "Mechanism,27"IMAC" at $28.41 ea. plus $39 labor. The total was $95.82, though it was fixed at no cost (I have AppleCare). A couple of other things threw me a bit on the Work Authorization. It showed my Mac with a mere 4GB of RAM and a 500 GB hard drive. (Actually 16 GB and 1 TB drive - and I was told they have to put something in those spaces). Also under Warranty Status were the words: "Variable Warranty(VW)". Tried to Google this but it reference a program in Australia??? Anyone know what this means?

My iMac was ready on the third day - Thursday morning. It was repaired and I was told the part has been improved. The iMac came back just as I had delivered it and I swear they cleaned the outside; the screen was spotless. I hope they blew the dust out of the inside too :-) Gotta say the person repairing it did good work.

Mac (27-inch, Late 2013) out of warranty (March 2015)

Monterrey México

One Morning just tilted down

Apple Autorized Service at Monterrey, Mexico Quoted 50 USD for the Mechanism and $ 50 Dlls Labor

very freaky knowing that they need to take apart the whole computer to be fixed

Chat with Apple Tech refuse to accept any flaws. She said that currently there is no "program" in place to cover this out of warranty

Escalate to Senior Apple Tech said the same, but forward my complaint to Customer Relations Dep ...

I considered it a hardware and design flaw, too much pressure for a plastic ring.

I will wait for an answer to authorize a free Repair

Add me to the list. Was just rearranging and cleaning my desk. Moved the iMac a little bit further back and heard a pop! Ugh! Droopy mode. It's nice to know there are tons of other people who have this problem. Mine is just a month of shy of being 2 years old. No Applecare. I would bring it to the Genius Bar tomorrow but I have a remix that has to be submitted ASAP so until I find that work I'm propping it up with an old iPad case. Thanks everyone for your advice!User uploaded file
