Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

I took my iMac in on Wednesday and provided the Genius Bar attendee the information provided in this thread that other owners received a free repair as it appeared to be a design/part defect. I also provided the SKU's for the part and labor that was utilized by others on this thread. The Apple employee was appreciative for the research brought to him. I was cheerful but firm that I expected the repair to be completed at no charge. The Apple employee agreed. I got a call late on Friday afternoon letting me know that my Mac was ready to pick up. Good as new. No Charge for the repair even though my Mac was purchased back in February of 2014 and I never bought an AppleCare contract for this computer.

Thanks to the community for keeping this thread alive and providing the 'secret sauce' to getting this obvious design flaw fixed. Thanks to Apple Computer for making an insanely great computer and for great customer service!

Same problem. Late 2013 iMac stand gave out today. It's no longer under warranty and not covered by Applecare, so I've jammed it at an acceptable angle. I thought Apple was a quality-based company especially considering the price you pay for their products. I'm not too pleased to find so many people with the same issue. This must be a design fault and as such Apple should stand up, accept responsibility and repair for free.

Oh quit your whining and being a poor victim, take the machine in to an Apple Store and ask for the repair then just get on with it!

I'm a brand new (yesterday) Italian member of the ******* club, with another 27 late 2013, and really can't believe there's not an exchange/repair program for that!

I already started collecting all the pictures with all the "solutions" found (mine is a little ball for dogs...) and I can guarantee Apple that - as journalst and social media expert - I'll do my best for the deserved... "promotion" worldwide!!! :-(

Thanks for chiming in and it ***** that it happened but I am not sure about your claim that there is no repair program. Many of us here have indeed had a free, out-of-warranty repair performed that includes an improved part that should prevent a recurrence. If you have been denied a repair, perhaps refer them to this thread because there is plenty of evidence that there is indeed a quality program in place for this issue. Good luck!
