Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

This happened to me twice!!

I can't believe it, we bought two 27" iMac in Feb 2015 together, one the hinge broke 2 months before the warrant is over and the second one few months after the warranty, apple care said there will be a charge since it's out of factory warranty. What's going on? This thing is expensive, why can they be better quality? People who fixed this issue for free, would you please tell us how you done it? I been on the phone with apple care for hrs already. This is what I used to keep my monitor up, but it's sad since it's only a little bit over a year and it's a beautiful designed....too bad everyone have to think of a way to keep it up. Shame on you APPLE!!!

I have the same problem on both of the iMac I got at the same time.

I live in Los Angeles, called Apple Care, they told that they noticed this problem with the 27" iMac due to the weight of the monitor so they offer to fix it for me for free. I got this iMac late 2013 and it's ridiculous that both of the iMac that I bought have the same problems just few months apart. If they don't fix it for me for free, it would have cost me around $70 to get it fix.

can confirm, this is an issue apple will take care of.

i have a 27" iMac (2013) that I purchased refurbished 14 months ago. hinge broke out of warranty, i called tech support who bumped me up to a supervisor. initially, he said this would be an out of pocket repair, but when i asked for a quote he went to check and came back to let me know this is an issue with my specific model, and that apple will repair it.

YMMV, but worth calling to check before heading to genius bar.

Happened to me too (iMac 27 inch late 2013). Repaired under warranty.

923-00151MECHANISM,27"IMAC

It is fine when I tested the hinge on pick up at the store. I was told the machine was diagnostically tested after the repair.

However, when I switch on at home, the display is now somehow pixellated, and the display preference only has 1280x720 (i.e. 720p) as the only "Scaled" option. It was previously 2560x1440 (default).

I phoned the apple store, and the advisor asked me to re-install OS X which i have done but still the same. He said phone again tomorrow if doesn't work.

As the store is quite a distance away, I am hoping to get this sorted without doing another 2 hour trip.

Any suggestions?
