Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

This literally just happened to my iMac (27-inch, Late 2012). Sitting on the sofa and heard a loud crack - couldn't find the source of the noise until I came to use my Mac the next day. I would agree - a design flaw 😠

So they're even doing it for the 2012 models, interesting. Thanks for your reply. I'm going to call them up today. What do you suggest I tell them if they deny it? Is there some way I can point them to your case or another case? I'd like to save $150 if I can because that's not a cheap repair for something that shouldn't even break.

Thanks! That seems to be a good thing to show them but what I'm worried about is that your warranty says Variable Warranty. No idea what that means, but mine comes up as Out Of Warranty. I'm sure they'll use that against me.

Wow, I can't believe the difference in the labour cost now. I don't know what the US equivalent is, but the new cost here is $100. He did originally quote me $39 or something like that, but then said that was the old cost.

Awesome! Was this done proactively on their part or in reaction to something you previously said to them? If it's proactive that's great, which means that they should be doing the same for anyone else who paid.

I'm hoping that the repair is permanent and they didn't just put in the same defective part. Otherwise, they should continue to replace that part for free every time it breaks.

Hey Mark, not sure if your asking if the hinge problem will effect your normal use of your computor but if that's what your asking then I would say no it won't affect anything else besides not being able to adjust your screen.

I hope the replacement part they're using is stronger than the original, otherwise I expect it will snap again at some point in the future.

Of course the replacement part has been improved, otherwise it would cost them additional money in repairs. They didn't get to be the size they are by making dumb design and business decisions. Of course, like any company they are far from perfect and have made their share of goofs. And like any responsible company when the facts warrant a change, they make them.

Its looks like Apple did not change the design for the replacement kit.

Surely the fanboi brigade will chime in shortly to tell us this was a brilliant design decision, but I'm disappointed to hear that Apple is punting rather than addressing the underlying issue. I wonder if current iMacs still use this design.

i just witnessed the same problem. I was looking at the screen at my desk and suddenly the 27" screen just tilted down on its own after a loud "click" noise. Now the screen simply look down at my desk and I need to put an eraser under it so I can comfortably view my contents. I am taking it into a store in two days to see what can be done!

Well, tonight called one of Apple's premium resellers which happens to have a store much closer than the Apple Store.

They look like knowing about the quality issue.

Tomorrow I'll take the computer for diagnostics, fingers crossed it qualifies.

The unique mysterious problem with my iMac 5k ( late 2015 )

The day before yesterday my iMac shut down automatically once in the evening at 7pm. After that I used it until 11 pm, shut it down and went off to sleep.

At 2 am, I hear a LOUD noise.

I woke up with a jerk thinking it's the door or window banging.

To my surprise, I see the 'screen' of the iMac on the floor. The body is still on the table ( please see pics ) I could not believe my eyes. This is a very very strange scenario.

How can the screen fall off and the body remain on the table ?

It was very supernatural / ghostly occurrence.

I was very worried / annoyed and could not sleep that night so I went on google and started searching if other people had similar issues.

What I did next :

Today morning I visited Apple store at Mall of Emirates, Dubai and met Mr. M. ( head of technical services from California ) who heard my entire story and was very kind enough to accept my iMac and investigate the issue. He was also very surprised by this strange issue.

At first he said the cost of repair would be approx. AED 2000 but I refused to pay that ( as its not my fault for this defect ) so he asked me to escalate the issue over the phone / email and that's how I got connected to you.

After I left the Apple store, within 30 mins I get a call informing me that there has been NO TAMPERING with my iMac and is has NEVER been opened by anyone before. I told her thanks for the information and iMac is still at the apple store until we reach a resolution.

Finally, APPLE REFUSED to fix this for me. They said its OUT OF WARRANTY. It's RIDICULOUS how Apple is ignoring all these issues and claims to be the most valuable company in the world. I FEEL CHEATED.

Same thing happened today to our 27" iMac purchased about 10 months ago. 😠

Bah! That happens to me right now, April 28, 2014. I don't have Apple Care and my iMac was purchased in May 1, 2013. Hum, I still under warranty! Let's see what can I do!
