I have OS X 10.9.1 and a MacBook Air.
When i open a new message window to type an email. It opens up as big as full screen or bigger. When I try to resize the window it won't allow me to make it any smaller.
Can anyone help?

What happens if you click on the green dot, top left of a New Message window - does that change the window size?
The green dot makes it bigger but so big the right margin is off the screen. When I try to adjust diagnolly it will get smaller top to bottom but it will not get narrower(smaller from right to left).
Are you not able to click in any corner of the new message window and rescale it (all four corners should be selectable)? Once you have a size that works, it should stick.
it doesn't matter what corner i click on it will not get any smaller...there is a problem it used to work before i updated to OS X Maverick.
Hi, I had the same issue, I read in a different post that there might be a hidden character in the signature causing the issues; I removed the signature and created a new one from scratch and that resolved the window issues. No this has zero to do with a signature, I don't have one. It's 3 inches wide, and it won't go any smaller (I like two). ALSO there is no way to get rid of the sidebar with the buddy images -- that used to be optional. How can you do that? YET ANOTHER reason not to upgrade ot Maverick.
I'm having the same issue. I did have a signature but I deleted it, restarted the computer and still nothing. What do I do??
push mouse selection symbol to top of screen, a Mail menu shows up. Go the view portion of the menu and deselect full screen view. That should do it.
I have the same issue when I upgraded to OS 8. It's so frustrating! I tried the usual way of moving the cursor to the bottom right corner to resize the window and it doesn't resize diagonally like it used to. I find it annoying to compose email by having this long window on the screen. Any help is welcomed. Thanks.
I'm having the same problem. The message viewer window will resize just as in the past, but every new message window sets up at a minimum and very wide size. This is a problem because my text won't wrap until it reaches the right edge of the window, so each line of my message is way too long. If I'm responding to a message the original text appears in its original line length while my response runs all the way across the much wider page.
This is a follow-up post. I worked around this problem by sending a draft of my email to myself, then clicking the forward symbol. The new message window that came up now lets me resize it. I haven't had time to try this out repeatedly but so far so good.
Another quick follow-up. I have several email accounts set up within Mail and have the "Bcc" field set up so I automatically get a copy of my emails in the account from which I send the message. Setting the "Bcc" to one of my accounts triggers a jump to a large message viewer window that won't resize. Then deleting that "Bcc" listing from the message doesn't fix the problem. I have to go back to a copy of the message I've sent to myself and again click the forward icon to get a window I can resize. This problem doesn't seem to occur if I paste the offending account into the "To" field of he message, only the "Bcc' field. Go figure!
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.
