i can't resize the new message window in mac mail.

I might point out the last 8 people posting to this forum have missed the reply from "onlinejim" which simply said - get out of full screen mode. I think he was too cool calm and collected and didn't write in all caps. I repeat, get out of full screen mode and the problem will go away.

No joy here. Just checked. No matter whether full screen mode is on or off, I can't size down below a certain extended width (120 12 point characters) when either of my Apple email accounts are selected as the FROM. I can resize up to larger dimensions dimensions but not down to a useful width.

I am in agreement with Millie and not in agreement with Bobbie.

Still looking for a solution to this annoying issue. The most astonishing thing is that when I log on to my other account (same powerbook) I have no issues resizing the new mail window. Go figure.

Also in agreement with Millie. I have exactly the same issue - only occurs with a specific mail account, and I am not in full screen view. It only appeared after upgrading to Yosemite. Very annoying. I am now putting a call in to Apple support, so hopefully they can resolve it.

Update - the signature was causing the problem for me.

Apple support were of some help, but after many different things were heading towards having to backup and then delete and clean restore the Mail application. But I ran out of time and booked a new session to continue, but in the meantime found this: new message window in Yosemite Mail is way to big for a small screen

The signature box for the specific account was really long and had some text from an old signature for some reason - that was the clue for me in the end. It most likely was the signature in this case. Anyway, I deleted the signature and rebuilt it and all now works fine.

Deleting and then re-enteing problem signatures has removed the problem for me also. Thanks for sharing this solution.

I deleted my signatures also in mail and eliminated the problem of the oversized window. Thanks everyone. Apple was of no use when I called they kept on telling me to take out other programs they "felt" could be causing the problem. Once again thanks...

Look in SystemPreferences->Displays->check "scaled" and see whether you have the correct display setting.

Same problem as mgish (November 13). As suggested after the link, I deleted all of my signatures (mail:preferences:signatures), restarted mail, and all was good - could again readjust the new message window dimensions. Then I pasted my signature back in the preferences (having stored it temporarily in the TextEdit application.) and restarted Mail again. Still good. Thanks for bringing this solution to this thread, and to Beroli for figuring this out..

I had this same problem, and I just figure it out, maybe it's your same situation

I could't move, resize the new message window, I was looking for an answer. I just found out, that if the Mail Window is Maximized, and then you try to write a message, this new window has the same maximized state and even there are no buttons at the top left corner of the widnow and indeed you can't resize this new message window, and even more, this window is at top and also you can't change activate the mail app window behind (This was very annoying to me) . So the easy solution was to set the Mail app window state in a normal way -not maximized-, Back to desktop, and that's it.

Wrong: as with all maximised windows: move the mouse pointer to the top (where the menubar normally is) and see: there appear the three buttons again.

I saw your video. I noticed that never your mouse pointer even came near the upper screen millimeters where the menubar is normally. You did not check as I explained in my earlier post.
