Macbook Pro Late 2013 Photoshop CC Kernel Panics

a panic in mdworker (the agent for spotlight indexing) may indicate unresolved Directory issues. I recommend you do a Disk Utility (Repair Disk) at your earliest convenience, or restart in Safe Mode and then back to regular mode.

Random failures in different areas may indicate a NON-Trend, which could be a memory issue in any Mac EXCEPT the Mac Pro (silver Tower or black cylinder), which have Error-correcting memory.

Been getting random panics since I got this MBP (late 2013, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB flash, i7 4750 w/ Iris Pro 5200).

I think I almost manage to reproduce them now:

- start an 1080p movie in VLC

- start an 1080p movie in another VLC or mplayer / mpv

- resize or move to the secondary screen one of the video apps (assuming it didn't already panic).

The keyword is "almost" - not 100% reliable. Just before writing this reply I was coming from 4 panics in a row, now I can't manage to panic it anymore.

In one I had Android Studio, Chrome with lots of tabs, Sublime Text, Terminal, a python proggie and was starting VLC.

The second one was with one VLC running w/ 1080p h264 in, Chrome running, the previous reboot window, Terminal, happened while starting mpv with an 1080p h264.

The 3rd happened with VLC (1080p h264), Chrrome, Sublime Text, the previous reboot window, Terminal, happened after starting mpv with an 1080p h264, while I was frantically resizing the window

The 4th similar to the 3rd.

I repetead again the steps, and It's not crashing.

IMO it's the Iris Pro 5200 driver. The laptop doesnt seem hot (it's cooler than my late 2008 MBPs) while at it. I can play Dota 2, Starcraft II, Diablo 3, Rocksmith without issues on it, and it gets hotter in the process. I might be wrong about Iris Pro, waiting for more data.

LE. to clarify, there's nothing from NVIDIA in my laptop.

Regardless of whether its the Iris graphics (listed ONLY in the first panic log and NOT in the others) or the indications of a NON-Trend which implicates RAM memory, You will need to visit Apple with your panic logs to get this resolved. (I believe your RAM is soldered in place, as is the graphics chip.)

You do not have third-party kernel extensions loaded. You do not have a panic at the same Address or even in the same routines over and over. A failure of the same type would show the same callback sequence -- yours do not. Mac OS X slightly randomizes the exact location where a routine will load to frustrate malware.

In my opinion, further re-Installations of Mac OS X will not provide additional information, but they may feel differently, so you will need to cooperate with them. Having complete and adequate Backups before visiting them is essential to making rapid progress.

If you are far from an Apple Store, you can call AppleCare and ask them to send you a courier pack to ship your Mac to a regional depot. You can also use an Apple-Authorized Service Provider, if you prefer.

thanks for the info. I'll see what I can do about that. The Apple store is just a couple of blocks from where I work (downtown Munich). They're the ultimate solution, since everything is soldered, as you assume.

Having spent hundreds if not thousands of hours with overclocking (voltages, memtest, linpack, specific revisions for RAM / CPU parts off of ebay or shady Chinese websites, etc) Linux/Windows computers I tend to fear and know how fleeting and volatile memory errors can be and I DO hope it's software (kernel-space related, with all the accelerated h264 decoding).

I'll definitely return it (show it for warranty) if I'm out of options but I tend to believe it's software or at least something common. The person with the "next" MBP from the same batch is just across from me and her MBP has also shown some signs (reboots, audio-video artifacts over HDMI when resuming from sleep) over the past months, though her use case is not exactly as demanding as mine.

I agree with you that reinstalling OS X won't help. I manually installed everything on this guy because I wanted a clean (-ish) environment, from my late 2008 MBP, as opposed to migrating the software and settings. I wouldn't really know what's foreign in my kernel just from looking at the panic log, but I'm pretty sure I didn't activate any 3rd party modules (I stayed away from OpenVPN or Razer mouse drivers exactly because of that).

Apple puts them at the beginning of the list of kernel extensions because so many problems are caused by third-party extensions.

nbar is the guy with the 3 machines, been watching his posts too. Thanks for your info. I'll keep an eye. Usually I'm watching twitch.tv streams on the secondary screen while doing other things, so I'm pretty sure I'll keep seeing crashes should it be the case. In the meanwhile I found the old crash logs (~10 pieces in January) in Console.app.

Ok, fresh from a panic. Still on 10.9.1. Had some also a few days back - while running either VLC or mpv (it's an mplayer branch).

First the most recent one. It's interesting because I can see someting wrong if I reproduce whatever it is I was doing:

I was watching via Chrome (stable 32.0) this vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=652N8sOQb4M with the builtin Pepper Flah player while at the same time I was watching Merlini's twitch channel in VLC. The laptop is not connected to an external screen. If I open the youtube video, VLC starts getting gray artifacts (the colors fade towards gray, stuff becomes very blocky - as if the decode were choking or running out of buffer), some flicker and some sound hiccups. If I close the youtube tab, the video in VLC recovers no problem. I managed to get 2 consecutive panics in this way, simply by running VLC side by side with Chrome on youtube via Pepper Flash (version 12.0.0.70). So here's a panic log:

I can safely say that the crashes happen regardless of the external 1080p screen connection state and they're correlated with (hardware accelerated?) h264 decoding. Even got one immediately while joining a Dota 2 game (just after the intro screen, after joining a game) with VLC on the second screen.

That looks like a GPU fault... I'm assuming that you have the Intel Iris Pro 5200 only?

If I were you, I would have Apple run diagnostics on the machine. Especially if this kernel panic only occurs when you're running graphics-intensive apps (Photoshop, VLC, Chrome, etc.).
