Why limiting downloads to 100MB over Cellular Data?

Dear Apple's resrictions makers,

I'm using iPhone 5s .. And i'm privileged with unlimited GBs over LTE Cellular Data.

I've choosed to download an App which is over 100MB .. Got the message that I should connect to WiFi in order to download this App .. Why?

iPhone 5s, iOS 7.0.4

@ckuan - Ford was trying to invent something (car assembly line), people did not know about cars at that time. Today, Apple is simply hindering us to use our data connections more. No need to go philosophical about it. By doing this, they are spoiling network carriers to slack off, instead of getting them to focus more on how they could "keep up" with the speed of technology, and the increase in demand for bandwidth use.

@clark - i just hope google/android and other companies don't follow if indeed the reason why apple is implementing this in their iOS is because of contractual obligations. pls update us if you find anything interesting 🙂

@dlion - i can say it is apple. i got my iphone from an apple store, it did not come with a contract with a network carrier. when i got my android device earlier this year, it did not include any sort of limitation on bandwidth usage. if networks really want to limit bandwidth usage from its users, they can do it from their side.

you are correct in your analogy, that the iphone is the car, and that the network provider provides the fuel. apple imposed a speed limiter though by limiting the amount of fuel it can consume. that is what's bothering me. why impose a speed limiter?

Perhaps Apple limits it for it's own reasons regarding sending something from its servers over cellular networks versus sending something from its servers over the internet. Who knows, Apple doesn't say.

When you opened your account here today you agreed not to criticize or question Apple's decisions about it business or its products. Yet the first thing that you do after making that pledge is to break it.

I find it hard to believe that Apple - "the most successful tech company in the world" would have issues sending data from its servers when, for the sake of discussion, its competitor can send data to more users without limitations.

I'm not criticizing Apple's decisions. I'm asking for their support. By raising my comments about this topic, I'm hoping someone from the company can take note of it and do something about it. I've also written an email to them about this prior to me setting my account here in this forum. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person in the world that feels this way.

I paid for their device, so I think its fair that I have a say in how they develop and support their devices. It's not like I'm bashing Apple, yes?

As was said earlier in this thread the initial request for the limit came from AT&T when the iPhone was first released. As it turned out AT&T had good reason to do this as the iPhone really put a hit on their data network and on Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile when first introduced on their networks. The limit was orgiginally 20MB and has been raised to 100MB.

Cell carriers biggest fear, if there was no limit, would be a release of a new version of iOS, say iOS 8, that users all hit the data networks to download at one time.

You can tell Apple your preferences here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html. I suggest you also send the request to your cell provider.

Yes, you've paid for the device, but the IOS is only licenced to you. Meaning IOS do not belongs to you.

Anyway, the answer to your question is given many times over. We user here cannot change the facts, so the why is a waste of time. Apple do not take part here.

Seggie, thanks for your inputs. Didnt know about at&t. I find it a bit off that just because of one carrier, Apple would implement something like that on their devices, which will affect all users regardless of their carriers. Will send off another to Apple about how I feel about this.

@ckuan - iOS may not belong to me, but as I said, I paid for its "service". If the "service" of that OS does not serve me well, I can at least give them feedback on how they can make their "service" better. Yes? We cant be forever blinded by what they always want right? Whatever happened to "legendary customer experience"?

They were originally the ONLY carrier that had the iPhone. Then they were the only carrier in the US for awhile. Then the other US carriers also wanted it limited as well as many foreign carriers.

Bandwidth for cell data is limited. No carrier wants to take down their cell phone network because everyone is downloading a large file at the same time.

What part that Apple do not take part here that you don't understand?
