Itunes update failed. MSVCR80.dll is missing

I just updated Itunes on my Windows 7 desktop and now it won't open at all. Error message says Program cannot start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer. Reinstall the program. I don"t want to lose all of my music. What do I do? Will Apple let me know how to fix?? Very frustrating.

Just had this issue: My solution worked for me.

My system: win7 64 bit

After running the update to the latest version I had the missing Dll issue and iTunes did not start.

Note: what led me to the fix was something that happened when updating a win xp install.

The error on that system was a c++ error pointing to the Program Files\Common Files\Apple Directory.

So in both cases:

1 - rebooted

2 - downloaded iTunes

3 - Created a Temp folder on the desktop called "Apple Fix"

Note: in that temp folder I created 2 additional folders "64" and "x86"

4 - opened explorer and browed to:

C:\Program Files\Common Files

And if present..

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files

5 - in both locations I right clicked the Apple folder and Cut the folder then pasted it to the appropriate temp folder I created.

6 - I then went to the downloaded iTunes installer and right clicked on it to run as administrator.

The install went fine. iTunes launched after install as expected and everything was as it was before, no loss of data.

Hope that helps

Just a note to my previous post: I did not need to uninstall any apple software.

I only removed the "Apple" common folder located in the specified path below and ran the installer again.

C:\Program Files\Common Files

And if present..

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files

Note: be careful not to remove any other folders.

My guess is Apple has some cleanup to do on the build release to clean up needed install files.

I did a System Restore - resolved it. Went into iTunes and offered a download - declined for obvious reasons! Awaiting Apple getting their act together and releasing an upgrade to fix the "upgrade". Maybe they should actually try out their "upgrades" on a number of PCs/Laptops/etc. BEFORE releasing them on the unsuspecting public...

Many thanks to all who posted fixes for this problem.

I have Win7 64 installed in Boot Camp on my iMac and, well, I just hope that whom ever is having a bloody big belly laugh (at Apple) over this schimozzle gets indigestion, then is sacked by Apple. I've been using Apple since my Apple ][+, and have never experienced anything like this before..... Except windoze updates.

Tt2, you deserve a medal mate. Well done!!!! (Even though you are a pom, lmao)

This was the one that worked for me, so thank you Suerreal! I have never before had issues updating iTunes on Firefox, but I couldn't get it to work with this latest version. As soon as I tried it on Chrome, it worked! Not a huge Chrome fan, but I was glad for it at that point. (I wonder... Could this be a Google plot to get us all to switch to Chrome..?)

The frequently suggested repair steps listed in comments athttp://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926 did not work for me yesterday when I attempted for an entire day to fix this commonly reported problem with the newest iTunes update. I now realize that I overlooked one step listed in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923.

My computer has a Windows 64 bit operating system. I should have paid attention to this instruction:

"If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, you'll need to confirm that the following folders have been removed:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\iPod\ "

Tonight, I removed those previous version files from the Program Files (x86) directory and executed the rest of the steps listed. Success resulted. If you are struggling like I did to install the iTunes newest update on a Windows 64 bit operating system, you might benefit to recheck that you followed the instruction listed above.
