Itunes update failed. MSVCR80.dll is missing

I just updated Itunes on my Windows 7 desktop and now it won't open at all. Error message says Program cannot start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer. Reinstall the program. I don"t want to lose all of my music. What do I do? Will Apple let me know how to fix?? Very frustrating.

I had this too, today, after I rebooted my computer after a couple of days. I recall that the most recent itunes update had failed inmidst.

Rebooting today revealed that MSVCR80.DLL was missing for a couple of applications, APSDaemon, iTunes, HelpMSG..something.. and more.

I'm presently reinstalling iTunes.

Would like to add: one will have to stop the service Apple Mobile Device Support to make the deinstallation succeed.

Yes, everything is saved. The order in which things are removed may make a slight difference. (It did for me with an error on reboot until I'd reinstalled.) Try the following proceedure:

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (Later)

Remove all of these items in the following order:

  • iTunes
  • Apple Software Update
  • Apple Mobile Device Support
  • Bonjour
  • Apple Application Support

Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or by right-clicking the downloaded installer and selectingRun as Administrator.

Hi, you can save time by removing the Apple folder in the common folder directories if you like, this will eliminate the time to uninstall stuff you dont need to.. You just need to reinstall itunes after..

If you search my username i made some detailed posts.. user - pc2mac809

It looks like there is something corrupt in the Apple folder located in the common folder after the latest build.

I recreated the issue after restoring an effected machine from backup and going through the motions.. It took less time to remove the folder vereses uninstall each app. for me anyway.

In reply to mrscotland:

thanks. I cannot reproduce it now since I probably deinstalled in the wrong order.

Stopping the Apple Mobile Device service didn't do it anyway. That would be done by the Deinstaller already. But what helped, was the repair of Apple Mobile Device Helper and then deinstallation of the latter.

Got around it and fixed it. Phew, what is Apple doing there all the time?

Thanks, I hope this works, but when I did all the deleting as above and in HT1925 one thing that would not delete as directed (with a 64 bit system) was the Apple folder - using a file I think it said, but I had nothing running that I knew of. So I left that folder there, crossed my fingers and installed ITunes and it worked.

If your way works it is a lot less frightening for us novices. I would think Apple would say if this problem occurs - press this button and have a macro do all this stuff given the amount of people that appear to have this scary (for most people) problem.

Great to know you guys are out there helping and cannot thank you all enough. Robert.

Apple's advice on this issue can now be found here: TS5376: iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows: Unable to install or open.

The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See the user tip Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy for a suggested strategy.

If you have difficulty downloading the iTunes setup file try clearing your browser's cache or using an alternate browser.

If content is missing from the library following the repair see Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash.

For device connectivity issues following the repair see TS1538: iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows, in particular section 5.

MobileMe is a discontinued service and should be removed if present. See HT2992: MobileMe: Uninstalling the MobileMe Control Panel for Windows for details.

Hey I finally got an older vesion of itunes to work!!! 10.7 x64 for windows 7
After uninstalling all apple products even quicktime
I had to delete everything from (program files, and program files x64, program data,)
And all downloads from apple, and I went in to search deleted other stuff from apple, and itunes
But definently not my itunes library and Playlist
Down loaded 10.7 x64 for windows 7, but checked (do not start when done)
Then I emptied my recycling bin and restarted my PC
I ran geek tech tool box same as reg cure pro, also PC Tools registry cleaner, and CC Cleaner
Then I emptied my recycling bin and restarted my PC
And wallah... It finally works, and I Love the older version anyways.
Easier to download and transfer music!!!!!
