I had this problem too with windows 8.1. Had to follow http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 to get to restall correctly (including removing all the iTunes folders after closeing all apple processes in the Task Manager including iCloud whcih is not noted in HT1923).

Now everything back running except for my playlist are gone, Does anyone know of a backup for playlist or why apple can't let iTunes look at our iPhone and recreate the list for us???

You could try using the repair options for the iTunes application in the programs control panel, or you may be better off moving forward...

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (Later)

Remove all of these items in the following order:

  • iTunes
  • Apple Software Update
  • Apple Mobile Device Support
  • Bonjour
  • Apple Application Support

(If Apple Mobile Device Support will not uninstall keep going with the rest of the steps.)

Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

Should you get the error iTunes.exe - Entry Point Not Found after the above reinstall then copy QTMovieWin.dll from:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support

and paste into:

C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes

The above paths would be for a 64-bit machine. Hopefully the same fix with the " (x86)" omitted would work on 32-bit systems with the same error.

This fix worked for me too, thank you! One issue I had that others have too, is if your previous iTunes installation was under your own user name/account and not the administrator account, then when you install iTunes as an admin, it does not recognize your previous iTunes library files as they are in a different folder under Documents and Settings than the admin folder.

To rectify this and restore all my playlists, play stats, etc., I installed iTunes as an admin as suggested - I'm guessing this was required to restore the .dll file broken in the first place. I then uninstalled iTunes again and reinstalled as I normally would - just double clicking on the iTunesSetup.exe file, but not as an admin. Doing so points iTunes to the original library files and will restore iTunes with all of your playlists in tact.

I routinely back up for iTunes library files as best practice in case they ever become corrupted. These files are typically located under C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\My Documents\My Music\iTunes. I now copy the entire contents of this folder, but I believe the most important files are "iTunes Music Library.xml" and "iTunes Library.itl".

If you installed iTunes as admin and lost your playlists etc., them you could also try copying these files from the iTunes folder under your <user name> folder to the same location under admin, though I didn't try this myself.
