Ok - PLEASE excuse my utter ignorance as I am a Mac user and I went to download this 11.4 update and now it has screwed up my husband's itunes on Windows 7.

I understand you have to uninstall itunes now, but:

A) I attempted to do as such and I get the following message - "The program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem".

How do I uninstall if I can't find it?

B) Is this going to erase all of his music and songs he has had on there for years??

Man, is he going to kill me for this one!!

Please help and again, I'm so sorry that I can't figure this one out being a Mac user!!

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)

Remove all of these items in the following order:

  • iTunes
  • Apple Software Update
  • Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
  • Bonjour
  • Apple Application Support

Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

Please note:

Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

tt2, thanks for the help, but I don't have an iTune folder at all in the (x86) folder. It was removed during the uninstall, BUT, I have many other remnants in th C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple file path that I cannot simply delete. I keep getting a message telling me I can't delete certain files as they are in use by other programs. I opened up Task Manager to see if anything might be running in the background that would be using those files. Closed down anything "Apple" related, and that still would not allow me to manually delete this folder with about 2,000 files in it. I also did not uninstall the Apple components in the Control Panel in the specific order that you must do (didn't know that until after the fact), so this has probably caused the issue. You must ininstall these components in this order, per Apple:

Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:

  1. iTunes
  2. Apple Software Update
  3. Apple Mobile Device Support
  4. Bonjour
  5. Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)

Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects.

So, I am on hold with Apple Support. Huge, huge mess.

Okay, here's how you have to resolve the issue. These are all the things I did:

Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:

  1. iTunes
  2. Apple Software Update
  3. Apple Mobile Device Support
  4. Bonjour
  5. Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
  6. 6. QuickTIme (this was my issue, issues with QuickTime)

Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects.

Reboot.

Download a fresh copy of iTunes 64-bit with Internet Explorer 10 to a folder on my computer and Install.

Do NOT allow iTunes to open (UN-check the "launch iTunes when finished")

Reboot.

Open iTunes.

This cleared out all the leftover remnants of .dll files, and allowed iTunes to reinstall all the components after the install and most importantly! the reboot before launching.

As long as you have the songs on your device (iPhone, iPad), or in your iTunes folder, or better yet, saved to iCloud (if you don't know what that is, find out, and get it set up), you're fine. Even if your music is just somewhere in a folder on your computer, you can add it to your iTunes folder and it will sync up (if it doesn't show up on your device). So, yes, again :-)

This is the best I can do. I had the same problem. I got this from Cnet on a different thread and it worked for me:

Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:

  1. iTunes
  2. Apple Software Update
  3. Apple Mobile Device Support
  4. Bonjour
  5. Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
  6. QuickTIme

Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects.

Then open the C:\Programfiles and remove all apple program folders. Also remove iCloud folder.

Reboot.

Download a fresh copy of iTunes 64-bit with Internet Explorer 10 to a folder on my computer and Install.

Do NOT allow iTunes to open (UN-check the "launch iTunes when finished")

Reboot.

This worked for me.
