Anybody know how to install DB2 in Mavericks?

I am trying to install and use DB2 on my new Macbook Pro. The documentation I can find is either too confusing or in broken English---almost as confusing. I need some simple clear instructions. Anybody?

I assume you have downloaded the DB2 Express-C for Mac OS X installer. What problems are you experiencing?

This is the general product page.

This support forum topic is titled DB2 Express-C 10.1 for Mac OS X installation guide.

I can't review the release notes without downloading that so I don't know what OS X versions are supported. The install guide states Mac OS X Mountain Lion or newer but might not be official IBM info. If you encounter problems, that thread would be a good place to get support.

Why so testy? I wasn't joking at all. I haven't heard anyone mention DB2 in years until you did. I'm quite surprised to see a Mac version. From modern IBM, it must be something written in Java. IBM has zero market presence in the Apple world. Unless you have someone forcing you to use DB2, you should stay away from it. You won't find any Mac person who knows anything about it. You won't find any DB2 person who knows anything about the Mac. Try MySQL or PostgreSQL instead.

Ralph,

If you want to install DB2 Express-C on your iMac, that is your business. Reread that sentence, as finding IBM or other support resources, when you encounter issues, and despite your abilities, may be daunting.

I have included a recent stackoverflow DB2 question and response. You will have to deal with the Apple .vs. Oracle Java installation conumdrum, because DB2 goes there in its Java setup script, and separate JDBC download.

There isn't a person in this community (and that certainly includes etresoft) that does not wish you well on your quest. We all express ourselves differently as is the international nature of our community. Had you chosen an opensource database solution such as MySQL community or Postgres, you would have found a vastly richer support environment for OS X installations and usage.

Good luck.

Wow! I don't want to overstate my enthusiasm for this response, but it's going to be hard not to. This decision is my business and it is my decision and it is what I want to do. That is why I sought assistance not resistance. Thank you.

You have restored my faith in this resource, not that anyone really cares about my faith except me. I frankly was astonished at the contentiousness.

I really appreciate the technical advice here. I agree that this quest will be, or is, quite daunting. I was unaware of the Oracle/Apple issue and that could be an enormous, maybe impossible obstacle. In fact, from your description, it appears that IBM has been careless, and maybe uncaring, in ignoring the issue. That would not surprise me at all as I am an ex-IBMer and am deeply aware of the little games they play. I am also an ex-Apple developer and aware of the same kind of corporate foolishness that they indulge in. On the other hand, sometimes that spells opportunity.

So, deep gratitude for your mature, helpful response. If I am biting off more than I can chew, I may just choke on it. But, there you go.

Thank you.

Testy because I asked a simple question and got an answer that was not directly relevant. I want to install DB2 on a Mac. Do you really care why? If you don't know how to do it and are of the opinion that it is dumber than dumb, well, that's your opinion. It doesn't really help me any.

You are surprsied to see a Mac version. That should tell us something. There have been Mac versions for awhile. You may also be surprised to learn that an ever growing number of IBMers are embracing Macs. I know some IBM big data guys who will only work on Macs and Raspberry PI.

Two things are clear. Other people have written more mature responses and the anwer to my question seems to be "no"---at least not in this forum.

I do appreciate the attempts to help me do what I wanted to accomplish and the other posts that were well reasoned.
