Bent iPad Air

I've read several reports of iPad minis with bent bodies. Now I'm facing the same problem for the first time with my own iPad, though it's an iPad Air.

I can assure you that I've done nothing wrong with the iPad in these less than 2 months of use. So I'm not completely sure what the cause is.

I just discovered how bent the body is today, though I suspect it was a progressive problem due to the thin and light form factor and the hot weather (sometimes the iPad got kind of hot during normal use).

Have you seen anything like this on an iPad Air? It looks really bad.

I should have sent an update sooner.

I took my iPad Air to an official apple licensed repair center in my part of Japan.

They told me that bends like mine (and OP's) are not covered by the warranty and that a replacement iPad Air would cost me 32,000 yen (roughly 320 USD). That was out of the question, so I immediately called Apple and explained my situation.

They payed to have my ipad shipped to them to have it looked at by an Apple engineer. They told me not to expect much and that it could take 10 days to have my ipad shipped back to me.

Two days later a replacement iPad Air arrived with no explanation other than something like "a thorough diagnostic inspection has revealed that a replacement iPad product is necessary".

So it looks like they decided to be nice to me without really wanting to take open responsibility for the problem--which I suspect is a design flaw.

My new iPad Air I keep in a sturdier case, which sort of ruins the benefit of its thinner and lighter design. Although I firmly believe that the problem has nothing to do with how I handled my original (eventually bent) iPad Air, I'm loathe to have the same problem happen again, and since I don't know exactly how it happened, I'm just being extra cautious just in case.

Best of luck!

I feel genuinely fortunate, especially because I suspect this is the kind of thing that Apple usually wouldn't want to take responsibility for (as we can see by it costing a third of the retail price to get a replacement usually). Of course I don't know why they sent me a new iPad Air. Their diagnostic tests may have revealed that there was some other problem with the iPad I wasn't aware of. I don't suppose we'll ever know.

There is a full Apple company in Japan, complete with customer support etc., so I called them of course, and they're the ones that must have sent me my new iPad the very same day they got my old one. Amazing, really.

I'm sorry to hear you didn't have the luck I did.

Use the advanced editor to post, then you will see a button to attach pictures.

I encourage you to do so even if it doesn't help you (after all you will still have to take your iPad to the store), as it might others believe and make a case online for the rest of users.

Now, if you bent your iPad on your own, please don't bother, or you'll be just damaging the little trust that this thread already inspires.

Don't hesitate to share your own experience with the Apple representatives as well.

My new iPad air 2 also has the exact same bent. After having it in my case for a long time I noticed that the proactive cover wasn't laying on the screen flat. This is when I toke it out and discovered it was bent! I hardly use my iPad, and don't take it anywhere with me. I use it without a case now but i am worried that the screen may crack over time from this poor design flaw on apples part. I know that's the first compants they had about the iphone 6 and the iPad air2 is not much different design or maturail wise. If they do not replace it they can probably be sued; but who has that kind of money to waste.

I bought an ipad air 2 in December last year. It is the fifth ipad that I own. I am an Apple fanatic. I have 2 macbook pro's, ipod touch, 5 ipads and an iphone. This ipad was meant to be best ipad ever. It definitely looks that way with the display enhancements and feather like weight. I found however that my R10000 ipad has bent. It is housed in a Body Glove case and an second more protective bag with thick foam on either side. I was so disappointed to see this happen after such a short period of time. I love Apple and teach in an "Apple one to one school" and promote the product to anyone I meet.

I was further disturbed to find that Apple have assessed the ipad through photos and have decided that it is my fault and not a possible fault of the product. They are so difficult to contact and today I finally got hold of the call centre where I was told that nothing can be done as it is already been assessed. What a waste of my money. My heart is sore with this kind of blanket response after all the money spent on this company and it's products.User uploaded file

I have a similar problem.

5 month old iPad Air in STM Dux case (from Apple) bent in my backpack on the way home (probably because of books pressing on it).

The device failed though, no readable\useable screen output.

Appe put it on a desk, since it didn't lay flat it was my problem.

I am trying to get it bent back flat so I can return it.

Anyone find a way to bend it back without damaging it?

I have he same problem. I have 3 iPad Air 2's. One they are allll in survivor cases. Earlier in the year this iPad had an over heating episode and didn't turn back on for 3 days!!! One day about 8 months ago(same month as said incident), I realized the volume kept shutting itself all the way down slowly. I took it out of the case and realized it was bent. I called Apple and hey let me know that this was MY problem. (It's bent on the same side where the volume buttons are. I keep using it because there was nothing I could do and it worked fine still! (Except can't be in a survivor case). SO NOW THE SCREEN BROKE BECAUSE MY KIDDO DROPPED IT!!! And it wouldn't be a big deal... except I CANT REPLACE THE GLASS BECAUSE HE STUPID THING IS BENT!!! And I'm giving up on life. I have 3 kids with autism and they rely on these! I k ow people are saying that heat won't cause the bend... but maybe heat caused something else inside to distort causing the bend???? Ugh. I fail at life.

The warranty doesn't cover damage. A bent iPad is one that was damaged. iPads don't spontaneously bend. Force must be applied.

Ugh, I also have the exact same bend, on the same side. I use a pretty sturdy case and it was kept well, so I don't see how there would be a bend. I went to an Apple store and they were pretty rude about it, also mentioning that it's my fault without even checking it thoroughly. They pretty much didn't want to try to deal with anything. They didn't try to look anything up and just flat out disregarded it. Not really sure if it's worth my time to keep pursuing.

Hi. My sons IPad Air 2 has done the same after 9months. Never been taken out of it's Griffin Survivor case and not a scratch on it or glass broken. Apple refuse to replace unless I pay $448. They say my son bent it on purpose. He is 7 and no glass broken or cracked. They just don't want to admit their devices are faulty and with the biilions of suckers out there wasting money on their devices why would they admit fault. Worst service and business EVER. I will NEVER EVER buy another apple product again. I'm actually going back to the company I bought it from and hoping they will replace it on THEIR customer guarantee. Lesson learnt.

The problem with a bent iPad is not that it is bent but (1) whether or not the bend causes components to fail (2) a bend in aluminum weakens structural soundness and so is prone to more bending and back to item (1). Though the frame is not under warranty, sadly Apple presumes that if (a) a frame has a bend then (b) any component fail is due to the bend.

This is a failure to honor a warranty as (a) may not be the cause of (b). And given that Apple divests its interests is showing or determining causes it is worth noting that any degree of bend (less obvious to the eye or visually obvious) is enough for Apple to void a warranty.

Perhaps in 2014 the advice was reasonable. Apple's policy is for the store or repair center to conduct a visual mechanical inspection (VMI). Should it fail a VMI, the device as a whole is no longer under warranty. So, for example, should the frame bend (fail a VMI) and a component fails (let's say a logic board or any other component) Apple will assume the failure of the component is due to the bend in the frame. So, even if there is a bend in the frame in 4 months and 3 month later the device fails to function, Apple will assume that the failed component is due to the bend in the frame. Apple will not take apart the the device to test/verify cause of failure. A slightly different scenario: Should a failed device go to a store and pass a VMI and be sent to a repair center under warranty and the repair center reports then reports a bend in the frame - the repair center will decide the devise as a whole is no longer under warranty and obviates the store's pass on a VMI.
