Bent iPad Air

I've read several reports of iPad minis with bent bodies. Now I'm facing the same problem for the first time with my own iPad, though it's an iPad Air.

I can assure you that I've done nothing wrong with the iPad in these less than 2 months of use. So I'm not completely sure what the cause is.

I just discovered how bent the body is today, though I suspect it was a progressive problem due to the thin and light form factor and the hot weather (sometimes the iPad got kind of hot during normal use).

Have you seen anything like this on an iPad Air? It looks really bad.

I should have sent an update sooner.

I took my iPad Air to an official apple licensed repair center in my part of Japan.

They told me that bends like mine (and OP's) are not covered by the warranty and that a replacement iPad Air would cost me 32,000 yen (roughly 320 USD). That was out of the question, so I immediately called Apple and explained my situation.

They payed to have my ipad shipped to them to have it looked at by an Apple engineer. They told me not to expect much and that it could take 10 days to have my ipad shipped back to me.

Two days later a replacement iPad Air arrived with no explanation other than something like "a thorough diagnostic inspection has revealed that a replacement iPad product is necessary".

So it looks like they decided to be nice to me without really wanting to take open responsibility for the problem--which I suspect is a design flaw.

My new iPad Air I keep in a sturdier case, which sort of ruins the benefit of its thinner and lighter design. Although I firmly believe that the problem has nothing to do with how I handled my original (eventually bent) iPad Air, I'm loathe to have the same problem happen again, and since I don't know exactly how it happened, I'm just being extra cautious just in case.

Best of luck!

I am experiencing the identical concern AND my iPad looks EXACTLY like the OP's pictures. The kink is in the exact same spot on the same side.

It seems a bit coincidental that the same exact warp is happening without the owner's understanding of why... taking it in tomorrow to have it looked at at an apple store (I do have one in my country thankfully)... I'm hoping they'll see reason and not charge the $50 for a new one (at least I purchased apple care).

I looked up the site that tears up the ipad components and The ipad air battery is actually very flexible and basically takes up the entire device. Nothing else appears to be in the way, so if the screen isn't really damaged it doesn't seem like this will be a big deal. unless the battery is cracked or leaking, u shouldn't see a performance issue and bending back doesn't seem like it would affect it. However, Bend it back at your own risk.

Obviously I'm sure this is not supposed to happen, and I personally won't bend it back again if it gets bent agin.

Same problem for me. My dad got me an Air 2 last November, along with a smart case (from the same store) in which it remained at all times since I bought it. Whenever I carried it in a backpack, I made sure it had a clipboard or my laptop as a hard and straight surface, yet it still bent. I noticed the problem recently, when the screen actually began coming off. I doubt I'll invest in Apple products anytime soon. I'll take it to an Apple Service shop to see if they can do anything. I don't mind the bend, the screen coming off is the problem. By comparison with my phone (an HTC) it's extremely unreliable. I've had it for like >2 years, it suffered quite a few impacts and problems, yet has no problem what so ever.

My iPad air 2 has exactly the same problem. The edge without volum tasts is bent 1-2cm upward. I have been at the service desk of the retail store where I bought my iPad. The guy working there is so adamant that the material used in iPad makes it impossible to be bent by itself. He meant it must have been me who had some kind of physical impact on the iPad. But I have always had the iPad in targus case I bought from the same store. I am frustrated because this is a manufactural error but Apple does not admit that. They rather blame me for bending the iPad.

This is an old thread, and apparently, bent iPads don't appear too often.

But they do occur. While the vast majority of iPads are quite flat, some units are somewhat or noticeably concave - without causing damage to the screen. If you work at Apple, it's natural to assume that an affected unit withstood some kind of trauma (e.g., someone sat in it), but that's not necessarily the case.

Not saying that it happened on its own. But I've been carrying my original iPad, iPad 2 and iPad 3 in bags for years and that never happened.

On a side note, if I did smash the iPad or sat on it, the screen would be cracked. Clearly that's not the case neither.

There's no Apple Store in my country, so I'll go to the same reseller where I bought my iPad. However I wanted to know if there were other stories like mine so I can make a well-founded claim.

Wow, how lucky you are!

Sadly, my case took a different path, but it looks like calling Apple is the way to go. So did you just make an international call from Japan to the US?

What I find incredible is how fast they gave you a new device–just 2 days after sending it out! Do you think they actually received and looked at your iPad before deciding to send you another one?

At the end I was contacted by an Apple representative, who told me that the engineers checked out my iPad just by looking at the images that I previously sent to the reseller (yeah, it's that absurd). The veredict: it was my fault.

Terrible support frankly, considering not only that I never got my iPad to be checked in some Apple store or something alike, but also that I would have to consantly write back to the Apple representative saying "hey, remember I'm still waiting for your call or any news".
