Bent iPad Air

I've read several reports of iPad minis with bent bodies. Now I'm facing the same problem for the first time with my own iPad, though it's an iPad Air.

I can assure you that I've done nothing wrong with the iPad in these less than 2 months of use. So I'm not completely sure what the cause is.

I just discovered how bent the body is today, though I suspect it was a progressive problem due to the thin and light form factor and the hot weather (sometimes the iPad got kind of hot during normal use).

Have you seen anything like this on an iPad Air? It looks really bad.

Use the advanced editor to post, then you will see a button to attach pictures.

I encourage you to do so even if it doesn't help you (after all you will still have to take your iPad to the store), as it might others believe and make a case online for the rest of users.

Now, if you bent your iPad on your own, please don't bother, or you'll be just damaging the little trust that this thread already inspires.

Don't hesitate to share your own experience with the Apple representatives as well.

I never did come back and report on my experience once going to the apple store, so here it is:

To review, my ipad had the exact same bend in the exact same place as the OP and to my knowledge, it had not received an impact or compression of any kind (brand new after all).

When I went in, they were rather rude about making the appointment with the genius bar (but that is a different story alltogether & may have just been the employee having a bad day). Once I came back on a later day, I showed the bend to the apple employee explaining that I don't believe this was caused by impact and offered to show him that I'm not the only one with this concern (this forum), he simply stated "I'll have to check if this is covered by the warranty" (again still under initial warranty since it was new). He took the ipad and walked to the back with it. When he came back he said without emotion of any kind "I checked and the frame bending is covered by the warranty on phones but not on ipads." He then went on to tell me how lucky I am that I have the apple care plan. While he deserved to be shot for really not thinking that the customer in front of him isn't happy to be there at all, let alone to be being told that he has to pay more to get a product that should have been reliable already, I'm sure he meant well.

So $50 later I got a "remanufactured" ipad (which is apparently the exact same thing as refurbished except they don't reuse external parts to make sure there are no scratches visible... he was very insistent that they are not the same thing).

How I would rate this experience 2/10... which is unfortunate because I've long been an advocate for the service quality of apple. I haven't had to use it much but before now all I've had were good experiences.

So far it is working fine and I have put it in a case that is strong of its own accord so even if the device is inclined to warp itself, it has something external to help hold it's shape. When windows mobile devices become more viable, we'll see if I stick with apple or not. After all, if they don't have service going for them anymore, they are becoming more and more like other electronic manufacturers.

I just noticed my ipad was bent towards middle/right portion of the screen when holding it vertical (home button on bottom).

Well, I bent it back and now it is fine!!!

Not sure what internals are in that specific portion of the device, but I haven't noticed any performance issues yet.

I do have applecare, so the risk to me to do this was not as great so it may be for someone else.

So, give it a shot at your own risk. It did work for me.

Obviously the product is not as strong as earlier models and apple products, but I guess there has to be some sacrifice for weight and thickness.

I looked up the site that tears up the ipad components and The ipad air battery is actually very flexible and basically takes up the entire device. Nothing else appears to be in the way, so if the screen isn't really damaged it doesn't seem like this will be a big deal. unless the battery is cracked or leaking, u shouldn't see a performance issue and bending back doesn't seem like it would affect it. However, Bend it back at your own risk.

Obviously I'm sure this is not supposed to happen, and I personally won't bend it back again if it gets bent agin.

At the end I was contacted by an Apple representative, who told me that the engineers checked out my iPad just by looking at the images that I previously sent to the reseller (yeah, it's that absurd). The veredict: it was my fault.

Terrible support frankly, considering not only that I never got my iPad to be checked in some Apple store or something alike, but also that I would have to consantly write back to the Apple representative saying "hey, remember I'm still waiting for your call or any news".

I got the same problem as Sherlock. I contacted AppleCare and they gave me an AppleCare ID. I went to AppleCare center and gave them the ID and sent my iPad Air in. On next day, I received a call says that Apple agreed to replace my iPad Air. I guess the engineer doesn't even open up the iPad as I was told by the AppleCare center that my iPad is expected to be examined in 3 working days. Right now I'm waiting the replacement unit to be send. As for you sherlock, in which country's AppleCare center did you claim your iPad, I'm just curious. I bought my iPad Air and claim warranty in Malaysia

Hi there,

I had the same problem with my ipad air recently but though i solved it and it worked like a miracle.

The ipad must be bent due to external force applied on it while your ipad was lying on a soft place like a bed, sofa or a cushion As even the screen would be shattered if the force was applied when it was placed on hard place like a table.

I Managed to get it straight again by putting the ipad with its back facing me on the sofa again and then pushing the bent part or the place where the bending is noticed the most with my fist as i hard i could. The screen did not break as it didnt when i first sat on it by mistake (though i cannot make any guarantees but should work if it worked on mine)and the shape back came to normal.

Hope this works and if you try this make sure you dont place your ipad somewhere hard like the table.

Ugh, I also have the exact same bend, on the same side. I use a pretty sturdy case and it was kept well, so I don't see how there would be a bend. I went to an Apple store and they were pretty rude about it, also mentioning that it's my fault without even checking it thoroughly. They pretty much didn't want to try to deal with anything. They didn't try to look anything up and just flat out disregarded it. Not really sure if it's worth my time to keep pursuing.

My new iPad air 2 also has the exact same bent. After having it in my case for a long time I noticed that the proactive cover wasn't laying on the screen flat. This is when I toke it out and discovered it was bent! I hardly use my iPad, and don't take it anywhere with me. I use it without a case now but i am worried that the screen may crack over time from this poor design flaw on apples part. I know that's the first compants they had about the iphone 6 and the iPad air2 is not much different design or maturail wise. If they do not replace it they can probably be sued; but who has that kind of money to waste.

I bought an ipad air 2 in December last year. It is the fifth ipad that I own. I am an Apple fanatic. I have 2 macbook pro's, ipod touch, 5 ipads and an iphone. This ipad was meant to be best ipad ever. It definitely looks that way with the display enhancements and feather like weight. I found however that my R10000 ipad has bent. It is housed in a Body Glove case and an second more protective bag with thick foam on either side. I was so disappointed to see this happen after such a short period of time. I love Apple and teach in an "Apple one to one school" and promote the product to anyone I meet.

I was further disturbed to find that Apple have assessed the ipad through photos and have decided that it is my fault and not a possible fault of the product. They are so difficult to contact and today I finally got hold of the call centre where I was told that nothing can be done as it is already been assessed. What a waste of my money. My heart is sore with this kind of blanket response after all the money spent on this company and it's products.User uploaded file

I too discovered that my iPad is bent in the middle of the right side. I took it out of the case to take a picture and noticed it, oddly the bend is on one side. It has been in the case since shortly after I got it: Don't remember doing anything to cause it. Í am going to make an appointment to get it looked at by Apple and will keep you posted on the result.

My iPad Air 2 has warped with a similar bend. At no stage has any pressure been applied to the outside I.e. It has never been dropped etc and therefore the only cause is pressure from the inside which points to the battery overheating and expanding. I have read that if you subject the iPad to more than 39c for more than 20 minutes this can cause battery expansion
