since numbers 3.1 rendering problem in output

Since I upgraded to Numbers 3.1 all printed output is no more crispy, it looks like a rendering problem. My Number documents consist of normal text elements and tables, sometimes some charts. Scaling on printout is not activated. On the Mac display the problem does not exist, everything seems to be fine, also in large zoom factors. But printing the document produces some kind of unrendered, pixely output, comparable to a screenshot, by far not that crisp as in Numbers 3.0.1. Other applications such as Pages, Word, Excel are not affected, printouts are fine.

What I did so far:

- uninstall and reinstall numbers

- changing, reinstalling the printer driver (HP Color LaserJet 2025 Series), I use the Postscript driver

- converting the Number documents to Numbers '09 and opening them again

- playing and testing with numerous zoom factors

- changing fonts in the Numbers document

... all without any success.

What helped me was:

- Installing Numbers 3.0.1 again using TimeMachine, installed it parallel to Numbers 3.1

- In Numbers 3.1 exporting the Numbers document to Numbers '09

- Opening that document in Numbers 3.0.1

- Printing the document in Numbers 3.0.1 --> Output ist fine and perfect.

It seems to be a rendering problem, only in Numbers 3.0.1. The problem appears in all existing and new Numbers documents on Numbers 3.1.

Here is my infrastructure:

MacBook Air Mid 2013, OS X Mavericks 10.9.1

Numbers 3.1 (1769)

HP Color LaserJet CP2025dn using PostScript

One further note...

As a non-publishing-savvy person, I would complain that my color selections don't seem to stick. Maybe there's a reason to this, but it bothers me that I can set a CMYK color and when I go back to the text or object that I applied color to, I find the Colors Pane sliders reset to RGB and upon switching to CMYK the settings are different than what I had set. Peter may have insight on this too.

Yes, you're right: the same problem exists in Pages 5.1.

I took your advice and posted in the Pages forum (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5975414). I couldn't find any other references to this problem in the Pages forum, but Apple's search functionality was super slow and I didn't have time to try more than a few queries.

Hi,

I'm having the same issue with Numbers 3.1 on Mavericks 10.9.2. My printer is an HP Color LaserJet CP 5225. Could it be a printer driver issue?

After upgrade today to Numbers 3.2 (1861): Still the same bug. Tables and PDF look perfect on screen, in any scaling factor; but printed on HP ColorLaserJet 2025dn (PostScript) they are badly rendered, no 'sharp' lines. Frustrating. Chris.

I just tried the updated version of Numbers (3.2) and I also still have the printing problem I described above.

I'm having rendering problems, too. I have a chart and a table overlaid that look perfect on my screen but won't print out correctly, not even to a PDF. I have resorted to exporting my document as a PDF then extracting the chart from the PDF. That version of it looks just like what I have on the screen.

By the way, this is actually a broader problem than Numbers---it seems to be the same for Pages documents under MacOS X, as well. You can verify this with a Pages document that has a table. Letters are rendered more crisply when in a "text box", compared to the identical text in a "table".

As has been noted, this is fine when on-screen, and only appears when printing in the 2014 iWork applications, even when incorporating the most recent updates (so Pages 5.2 and Numbers 3.2). The identical documents print fine under the much-earlier versions (iWork '09: Numbers 2.3 and Pages 4.3).

Yes, I started a thread about Pages displaying the same problem.

FWIW: the latest OS update 10.9.4 does not fix the problem. I had the tiniest hope, as the release notes mentioned fonts, but alas: it was not to be.

Just a quick note that Apple's latest HP printer updates via the Mac App Store did not fix the printing problem I described above on Numbers on my system.

At least on my system, it appears this problem has been remedied in Mac OS X 10.10 when used with Pages 5.5.

The problem appears to be fixed on my system too—Yosemite (Mac OS X 10.10), Numbers 3.5. This has been a long, painful wait, and I'm glad it's over!
