The requested URL was not found on this server.

I was just going through my videos and found that about ten of my videos are not accessible. I believe that just a few weeks ago they were still accessible, though I cannot specifically remembering testing that since late December. Their thumbnails are now gray squares with a small "MOV" in the middle, and when I try to play them the first frame of the video is displayed with the play icon, but a message pops up saying "The requested URL was not found on this server." (The option "OK" is below the message.) When I tap the play icon, nothing happens. I cannot figure out why this would happen as none of my photos or videos are stored on iCloud or Photo Stream, so I don't know why URLs or servers would matter. Also, these were taken on my device so I know it's not an issue with the files not syncing correctly from my computer. Does anyone know how I may be able to salvage these randomly, recently corrupted video files? As a side note, I do not regularly sync my device, so restoring a backup is not an option for me, this would cause bigger problems than ten missing videos, probably.

I just had this same error, however I got it while transferring photos using Image Capture, a habit I got into when I wasn't using iPhoto to manage my photos on my older Mac. I recently bought a new iMac though, and have been regularly syncing with iPhoto to manage pics and vids. So in my case, if I lost anything, it wasn't much since I had synced within the last few days.

This is definitely an odd and serious issue. I hope it's not an indication that the Flash memory is gonig bad on us. I've had USB memory sticks go south and be unusable after a couple years.

So sorry to hear about the memories people have lost.

I also have had this issue. Always been fine with Image Capture and manual backups, however this time it has done me over! Carried out the following:

  • Plugged in iPhone
  • Opened Image Capture
  • Ordered pictures/videos by date in Image Capture
  • Selected the first X amount of photos/videos - with the intention of leaving the latest pictures on the phone and taking a backup of that image
  • Selected Import with 'Delete after Import' checked - to free up space on the phone, create a smaller backup file
  • This went through its usual import process, then returned a series of errors saying certain items were not imported
  • After this, there were only 3 photos and 80 videos left on the iPhone all showing a '?' thumbnail and when I clicked on these within the iPhone I was given the following error: The requested URL was not found on this server

I then took a fresh backup in case it just got its knickers in a twist, reset all settings on the phone, no joy.

Restored from an earlier known good backup from, then tried again to restore from the latest backup...which returned only the rogue files again.

Ran loads of recovery software, which only seems to find files which have been sent via iMessage or Whatsapp etc, i.e. ones that are still physically on the phone somewhere....the rest appear to be gone.

I know there will be a million people saying 'well if you don't backup then you deserve it' however this occurred DURING the backup process (Not everyone uses iCloud :-/ ), and had it been a genuine mistake I made I would have been ok with it, however the process deleted files which were not selected in the import, and thats a tough one to swallow.

Awaiting word back from the CPU support team, the IOS support team were not really able to provide a solution. If I get anything worthwhile back I shall update.

Happened to me as well. Pretty typical process of using Windows Explorer to copy files from the "Internal Storage" folders of the Iphone 5 to the local computer. Files stopped copying half way through and all I was left with was 50 MOV files with grayed-out thumbnails, no pictures, and the URL not found error for each "MOV." Actually, I didn't even think I had 50 MOVs to begin with.

Same problem with my 10 year old nephew's ipod touch. Before showing me the many hours of stop action videos he created over the past year I suggested we back up his ipod. All his efforts from the past year are now as you all report. A mov and an error stating "The requested URL was not found on this server." He is in tears. Any help from apple would be very appreciated.

the same thing just happened to me while I was backing up to my computer (windows). I managed to transfer up to May of this year, but missing pics of my son, his friends, July 4th videos. Pretty heart broken. I didn't have pics turned on to back up in iCloud bc I usually back up to my hard drI've on my PC. I'm going to go in and see a genius on Tuesday. 😟

Same issue as allande. I was trying to back up my photos and videos using Image Capture, as I have done many times over the last few years. This time, I ended up with error messages and now I have many broken videos on my iPhone. Its such a shame, these were great videos from my honeymoon.

If I had been lazy and not backed up, and then dropped my phone into a pool, that would be one thing. But this stings even more since I was doing the backup when I got screwed.
