Restart and hold down cmd-R. It should boot into Recover. From there, Repair the disk.
If the drive is dead, it may boot into Internet Recovery. That will boot from the Apple servers, but you can do the same things from there.
I have downloaded the 10.9.2 but still can't get it installed. Now it's telling me I need 10.9 first. I'm currently running 10.6.8 which on the App page clearly says 10.9.2 will update on 10.6.8....any other suggestions?
No, it doesn't say at all that the 10.9.2 update will "update" 10.6.8.
The App Store page says you can Upgrade to Mavericks from 10.6.8 (if your Mac is capable), and you will have installed the most current version, 10.9.2.
The web page where you downloaded the 10.9.2 Update specifically states that 10.9.0 or later is required to install the update.
For the delta update:
For the combo update:
If you wish to upgrade to Mavericks, open the App Store (command is in the Apple menu) and click on the Mavericks link to download the installer. If it tells you it cannot be installed on your Mac, then your hardware is insufficient to run Mavericks. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x-mavericks/id675248567?mt=12
