Rendering problem in output of Pages 5.1

Has anyone else seen a print rendering problem when trying to print a table in Pages 5.1?

All my text in tables is jagged and lower-resolution than other text:

User uploaded file

(Printed from Pages 5.1 (1769) on a HP Color LaserJet CP2025 from a retina MacBook Pro original model running Mavericks 10.9.1.)

To see the problem, you must look at the full size image. Right-click to open it in a new tab.

The type is set to Helvetica 12 pt black.

The borders are set to 0.5 pt black. The top two lines have a border on all sides.

The top line's border is nearly invisible; on the full size image you should see a faint blueish line.

The middle line's box box is supposed to be
a full box, but it is missing two sides. But at least this hairline renders properly.

The pdf of the same file looks fine on screen, even at high magnification. The problem only shows up in print.

The same problem exists in Numbers (where I first experienced it):

Apple has had this for 7 months now.

If nothing else Apple users seem to be good at holding their breath.

If this gets fixed there is still the matter of the 100 missing features and truck load of other bugs to deal with.

Pages 5 is beta, just Apple never said so.

Nomaxu is confusing what he/she sees on screen with what gets printed, two separate issues. The core problem of Pages 5 output and whether or not the Printer is PCL or Postscript was discussed earlier.

The practical solution is to use the non-beta version of Pages ie Pages '09.

Thanks for posting your experience, Rocketcheffe. I still haven't had the time to test other brands of printers, so I'm glad you reported that some Canon printers do not display the problem. Whether or not it's Postscript/PCL remains to be proven, but it's likely. Do you know if the Canon printers were Postscript printers?

Keeping this thread alive is important because Apple hasn't (to my knowledge) publicly noted this bug.

(And let's all agree to ignore the snarky posts that seek to blame us, not Apple.)

You are not being blamed, but you have a solution. Use it.

If you really want to put pressure on Apple, rate/review Pages 5.2 in the App Store.

Providing feedback via Apple's feedback links is only telling them what they have already been told. If they choose to do something about it, they are not saying and already have a lot on their plate, most of which trumps this issue.

I can not understand what it is that you can get out of Pages 5.2 that makes you ignore all the many problems.

Wait till you try and open a Pages 5 document one day and can't.

Putting yourself in harms way is a choice, most of Pages 5 problems have no real solution. We can advise how to do certain things that are possible in Pages 5 but when things go pear shaped, all we can say is you were warned.

This is the latest driver information for your model that I can find:

I doubt the HP printer is using true postscript. It is is in all likelihood a clone which nearly all breakdown on the finer complexities of image RIPs.

You have not said what tests you have done in alternate software from your Mac using the same printer. That would be an obvious starting point. My gut feeling is that given some of the other font rendering issues in Pages 5's tables, there is something seriously wrong in the coding, handling objects and text within Table cells.

My suspicion is that it has some fallback, like for difficult image rendering, of converting it to 72dpi bitmap and that is your problem.

Whatever it is it does not offer any real world remedy.

You get that from software that works.

I went through this with a client who foolishly installed a new software RIP, without pre-testing and against my advice, on a major Fujitsu set-up. The end-user can not recode the software. Making offerings of chicken blood and your first born is not going to change the bad output, and massive downtime.

Notify the supplier, in this case Apple, remove the offending software and get on with your work. If and when the supplier fixes the issue, test it again, before commiting it to real work.

Too bad that doesn't work, very same problem but different solution 😟

To be very conscientious, here's the exact steps i've been thru (could help someone else if doesn't work for you). Btw it's an update to mavericks, not a clean install, maybe it makes a difference.

1) Go to preferences > printers

2) Manually delete all printers in the list

3) Right-clic in the list and "reinitialize..."

4) Go to + > add a printer

5) Keep tab to default and select printer (type need to be "Bonjour", the bottom list select "use AirPrint" for me but maybe it's not important here)

6) Rename and make default

7) In pages 5.2 select print>and the new installed printer

Works fine for me, print is perfect now !

Good luck to all of you,

Nomaxu

In response to your question, my setup works just fine from all other programs. The problem is limited to the latest version of Pages/Numbers.

I find that the latest version of these programs have a better interface that's easier to understand. I would like to use them, but I don't because of this problem.

I will continue to update this thread so people who newly discover this problem on their systems don't waste time trying to solve it. I think that's a useful purpose.—nothing more, nothing less. This discussion would be a lot better off if you would stop scolding those of us who are participating.

Thus: the latest OS update 10.9.4 does not fix the problem. I had the tiniest hope, as the release notes mentioned fonts, but alas: it was not to be.

The exasperation creeps in when you yourself observe the problem is with the latest versions of Pages/Numbers but don't do the obvious of sidestepping the issue.

How do Pages/Numbers have better interfaces when you can't find so many things, particularly the 100 missing features?

As I keep pointing out, wait till the day you can't open your file. Nor extract anything from it.

Just to add my voice to this, we're using a Sharp MX-4112N laser printer with a Mavericks-compatible driver and we have the same problem. Like yourselves, other apps print fine, but any table-text in Pages is poor.

I've tried both IP-based and Bonjour-based printing.

Using Pages v5.2.2 (and Peter, yes, I continue to use Pages 5 for a number of reasons : it comes as part of the Mavericks distribution and is supported via the App Store, I don't need to go off hunting for old versions, and I agree with those above that it has a better interface than previous versions - I'm not sure what these 100 missing features are that you keep referring too, but they're not features that I need or miss, so my preference is to use the latest major release and report issues as and when I find them).

Actually it is over 110 missing features:

…and that does not count this issue which I count as just one of the many bugs

I fail to see how it has "a better interface" particularly when it simply fails to do many things and makes you jump through hoops for the rest.

It can be easily demonstrated that most things take multiple steps where they used to take one or two and Pages 5 hides nearly everything*.

It is not a major release, it is a downgrade which has caused tremendous havoc for its users and their work.

Peter

* As demonstrated by you don't know what is missing, and all the users, who want to do work to a competent standard, flooding these forums wailing "Where is it?"
