I have a 2013 27" iMac at home with Mountain Lion, I set it up for Remote Access in the Sharing Preferences and got the address it gives me to log in remotley. I set energy saver to allow wakeup for network access.

I have entered the address given (cut & paste "ssh xxxxxxxxxxxx@10.0.1.4") into the Terminal utility ( as specified by when turning on remote login in Sharing Preferences) at a friends house who has the same machine but running Mavericks. The connection is either refused or times out.

What am I doing wrong?

Essentially you're trying to connect from one remote (your friend's house) private (non-routable) IP address range to another remote private (and equally non-routable) IP address at your home. To give you an idea what a non-routable address is they will be roughly in these three ranges: 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x and 172.16.x.x.

However that's only part of the reason why it's not working. Using the word "Internet" as the search string on this Forum should get you something like this"

Are just some that should give you the answers you need to make this work.
