I'm experiencing this problem as well with a 1st gen Atv. It is accessing the Internet, but won't access movies, music or tv.

Adding to long list of loyal Apple customers (& potential complainants):

Same problem as previous posts. Neither of my two G1 ATVs (40G & 160G) have worked properly for past 3+ days.

Both were quite expensive when purchased (new) but liked Apple's integrity/reliability & needed something to keep my family entertained, etc. while serving in the Army (~30yrs).

I trust they will adhere to a covenant of taking care of their loyal customers (who helped them build a such profitable business) as we did supporting them.

Hope we all see a resolution to this fairly soon.

Good morning from NYC. Just checking in to report no changes at all meaning when my ATV1 is connected to the Internet I have no access to the iTunes Store through the ATV1, no access to the content on iTunes on my MacPro, and the content on the ATV1 hard drive and the trailers options play at a crawl if it plays at all.

When my ATV1 is disconnected from the Internet and directly connected to my MacPro I am able to access all of my content from iTunes. On my MacPro through the iTunes Store I was able to download a TV show in both HD and SD formats. The SD format version streamed to my ATV1 with no problem. So this may work for all of you that want to download a movie or a TV show and want to go through the extra step of downloading both formats. The Apple iTunes store has no cost TV episodes that I accessed. (You have included content in your post that is not permitted. The forum will not let me use the word free in the previous sentence for some reason.)

I keep hearing that some of you are having trouble accessing Netflix. Since Netflix is not available on ATV1 I am guessing you have an ATV2 or ATV3. Please clarify which device you have.

This is most certainly not a network issue.

I have 2 Gen 1 Apple TV's and they both went mysteriously haywire today.

Loss of menus other then My TV Shows and my Shared TV Shows and major buffering issues if I can actually get a show playing as the unit continually tries to add the Top TV Show icons at the top of the screen.

It came good about 2 hours ago but is gone again.

Very very frustrated.

I hope it comes good in the morning as I am sure this is an Apply TV Server issue.

Asked to add to this thread. Not happy but happy to see I am not the only one in this position.

If it works directy connected to your Mac then a work around might be to give it a static IP address with no gateway so it can't get to the internet. Then at least it can be used to play stuff back from the Mac. Just a thought. Haven't tried it myself yet.

I've sent in a report request with a summary of all the info here. Worth a go. I imagine that Apple handle so many report requests per hour that unless enough of a noise is made (in the nicest way possible), it simply won't get past the 1st line service desk who won't have a clue about such issues.

Fingers crossed.

I'm in Australia & I've had the same problem since at least 0600 UTC on the 18th.

  • Missing menu items ('Top Movies' etc)
  • Locally shared movie & TV show thumbnails flicker from constant reloading
  • Can't select 'Trailers'
  • User interface is very sluggish & unresponsive
  • Video playback is choppy
  • Diagnostics reports everything is okay
  • Factory Restore doesn't fix the issue

It's an AppleTV 1 160 GB running 3.0.2, it's never been jailbroken.

Same problem here, ATV1 160GB, no iTunes Store content, jittery response of remote, internet connection is okay (youtube works).

No joy after factory reset and updating, diagnostics says device working properly.

Contacted Apple iTunes Store Support, initially was told to call Apple TV tech support but later discovered this topic. Sent link to the iTunes Store rep, awaiting reply.

Can access store with ATV3 and MacBook Pro.

Wouldn't like it at all if ATV1 support was purposely dropped, need its analog Audio Out for my setup at home, ATV3 only has optical and HDMI. Besides, it's in perfect working order.

So hopefully just a glitch.

Had been waiting for response from iTunes support re rentals that have been lost due to the ongoing problem. Rental has been refunded rather than download instead of re-authorized for download as I had asked (and as Apple are able to do and have done in the past) and no word on the problem itself.

Brooklyn. ATV1 3.0.2 Clean.

Yeah I can't imagine it was done on purpose with no warning right before the easter weekend, they wouldn't be that stupid surely?

more likely to be a server snafu, kinda eye opening how reliant the basic operation of even just playing a podcast from the hard drive is compromised by a server out there in the cloud,

makes you think!

Apr 19, 2014 8:55 AM in response to Adambard

The fact that Apple gave you a refund for the download is a bad sign for me. I mean technically the download is available to you via iTunes on your computer (if you have a computer) meaning they rather give you your money back then tell you that you are out of luck and have to buy a new ATV because this one is no longer supported in the iTunes Store. There must be a huge segment of users that have the ATV1 connected to the Internet, do not have a computer, and no have no way to by new content. They now have to buy a computer or a new ATV if Apple really killed support and access to the iTunes store for the ATV1.
