I'm experiencing this problem as well with a 1st gen Atv. It is accessing the Internet, but won't access movies, music or tv.

Hmm... still keeping an open mind about the cause of the problem. Could be anything.

I do hope it is simply a glitch since it would be irresponsible and unethical to simply drop support in this manner—it's one thing to make itunes unavailable, quite another to compromise playback of purchased content on your local drive.

Beyond that, purposefully making a brick out of hardware is terrible from an environmental point of view. Apple is supposedly commited to sustainability. No company that is truly responsible would do this.

So, hoping for the best.

Quite a few people have reported that this is affecting their 2nd & 3rd gen Atv as well, so I think it would be safe to rest the idea that it's a deliberate act to drop gen 1's, for now anyway.

The only complaint we should really have is their lack of response to the problem, but we have to also keep in mind that this unfortunately occurred on what is a holiday weekend in many places, so that would have an effect on response. Though it's frustrating when you want to use your device, but can't as I really want to do right now, a little patience may be required.

For now let keep reporting here and clicking the "I have this question too" at the start of this thread. Letting them know many are complaining might help speed it up.

Hi Everyone - I'm in California and I have a 1st gen Apple TV, and I also have no content.

I called Apple Support in the United States, and they said they're aware of the problem and their team is working on restoring it. They said the technical problem is affecting only 1st generation units and we have to wait until the problem is resolved. If my Apple TV is not restored by early next week they said to call again. Support said most likely we will receive a notice to install an update which will restore our Apple TV content, and to keep checking on our Apple TV regularly. They apologized for the inconvenience that we're experiencing.

So, Apple Support said they're working on resolving the problem.

I hope this helps everyone.

My ATV GEN 1: Exact same symptoms as everyone else on this thread. Essentially it is reduced to a fancy screensaver (pictures loaded to the unit still show on the screensaver but that's about all that is working)

My ATV GEN3: working normally, but downloading content slowly.

Just piling on to help the thread get the attention it needs...

This is wonderful news and the best report I have read since this started. Nonetheless, I reiterated to all of those following this thread both the new and old, click the "I have this question too" link, and to please write to Apple at:

https://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html

and let them know about the issue. If you have an Apple TV generation 2 or generation 3 PLEASE let us know in this thread! I keep hearing about issues with Netflix and iTunes Store with ATV2 and ATV3 but nothing substantial.

Perhaps, a very naive question ... but ... could Apple just drop an essential feauture of the Apple TV???.... just like tha!!! ... it is as if the old laptops and desktops were denied access to the internet!!! ... I have seen old iMacs and eMacs and etc etc etc working "fine" ... so why couldnt the 1G Apple TV countinue having access to the iTunes store! ...

truly, a dissappointment!

So I followed up on the suggestion by Solar Wallace and changed the TCP/IP information on the affected AppleTVs to test if local content could be played without stuttering. The good news... IT WORKED! You still cannot access the iTunes Store but all local content on your Mac/PC/AppleTV is available and works without any problem.

For those who need a walk-through:

1. From the main menu go to "Settings" -> "General" -> "Network" -> "Configure TCP/IP"

2. Change "Configure IP" from "Using DHCP" to "Manually"

3. Give your ATV a new IP address that isnt already in use. For instance... Mine was automatically given 10.0.1.9 and I changed it to 10.0.1.123. Only change the last grouping of numbers! The number must be between 0 and 255 and I would choose a large number because it is less likely to be in use. Also, if you have multiple AppleTVs you cannot reuse this address. It must be unique.

4. Leave your Subnet Mask alone.

5. Change Router Address to an invalid address. I changed mine from 10.0.1.1 to 0.0.0.1. That address should work for anyone.

6. Change DNS Address to an invalid address. I changed mine from 10.0.1.1 to 0.0.0.1. That address should also work for anyone.

7. Accept the changes and return to main menu.

8. Reboot your AppleTV. Either unplug it or press and hold down arrow and menu buttons on remote until the orange light blinks rapidly. Follow options to reboot but not reset the AppleTV.

At least now I can watch shows I already downloaded, or can get new things from my PC/Mac and then watch it on the AppleTV. Its a decent work-around until Apple corrects the actual problem.

I just got off the phone with Apple and it is a know issue. According to the person I talked to the engineers (or software designers) are working on it. The customer service representative stated that access to iTunes from the ATV is being blocked for some reason. He also stated that "hopefully" the problem will be resolved within the next 48 hours. So, perhaps by Monday the 1st Generation Apple TV's will have access to iTunes and the device will work properly.

Crossing my fingers!

figured out a quick way to allow stored content on the Apple TVs hard drive to be played without stuttering,

connect the apple tv to any network switch or router, just so the apple tv sees something at the other end of the ethernet cable, but do not connect this device to anything,

disconnect the ethernet cable to sync files from your computer over wifi (or to use youtube)

reconnect the ethernt cable to watch stored content without stuttering

it works fine
