apple tv does not access iTunes - 4/17/2014
Apple TV (3rd generation)
I'm experiencing this problem as well with a 1st gen Atv. It is accessing the Internet, but won't access movies, music or tv.
Same problems here. Factory reset did no good. Sent feedback to Apple.
I have two ATV 1st GENs and one ATV 2nd GEN.
The ATV 2nd GEN works as usual without issue and I can access all of iTunes.
Both ATV 1st GENs stopped working on 04/18/14 and exhibit the same issues described in this thread. No access to iTunes, can not play already purchased media (movies, TV shows, music, podacasts) synced or streamed, sluggish menu selection and navigation, and ultimately both will lockup and freeze.
I can access and play all of my purchased media (as well as purcahse and play new media) from the ATV 2nd GEN, my iPhone, and my Itunes accounts on mulriple Macs (via iTunes). This suggests to me that the issue is ONLY affecting 1st GEN ATVs.
Same Issue, ATV 1st GEN cannot connect to iTunes, but can connect to internet for YouTube, and can play all locally stored content and can update all locally stored content by synching with iTunes running on my local WiFi. Apple Store Genius folks have not heard of this issue (was just in Apple Store) in CA.
SAME HAPPEN TO ME TODAY WITH MY ATV1..
Thanks for checking in rhonda214. The timing and strong rumors about the new 4th gen Apple TV due to arrive this year fit quite closely with this sudden worldwide disruption in service for 1st gen owners. The 1st gen is the only one not currently capable of the new interface and that would leave 1st gen owners hung out to dry if they add the features that are rumored. They're most likely doing a major update to support the new features of the 4th gen Apple TV without permanently disabling 1st gen owners. This make perfect sense if they indeed are finally going to offer an update for the 1st gen owners, as seems to have been suggested on your phone call.
If it turned out I couldn't rent movies from my 1st gen anymore, well that's fine with me, I haven't in a long time anyway. I personally have moved on to providers like Amazon and MGO for movie rentals and I own a 3rd gen Apple TV if I really want to rent movies from Apple or watch content I own. All I use my 1st gen for these days is podcasts and occasionally YouTube. I really do prefer the Apple TVs for podcasts, so if they at least restore that capability, I'm fine with not having movie rentals on it, if that's the way it had to be.
If nothing at all, well that *****, but there's lots of other options out there (i.e. New Apple TV, Roku, Chromcast, Fire TV, etc). Not to mention installing XBMC on it, which if you haven't explored, you really should. It's well documented and not hard to do. However, Apple has never dropped support for an online service on one of their devices overnight with no warning, so I'm sure it will all be resolved soon.
Thanks Rhonda for calling the support.
It would be nice to read something official from apple here in the forum. I mean this is the APPLE support forum. But no one from apple seems using this channel to inform us users about the problem or their solution.
It's not nice to leave us alone with the problem, without any official information.
might be nice to have an update to our 1st gens, it will be the first update for about 4 years!

Apple's partner for delivering video content is Akamai. A poster earlier in this thread analyzed what his AppleTV was doing and found it was repeatedly contacting Akamai and not getting a response, to the extent that it could have performance impacts on the main menu.
Akamai has been fixing their servers in response to the Heartbleed vulnerability recently publicized. Akamai's first repair proved to be faulty, however, and starting April 14th they begin replacing all of their server security certificates.
Here is their blog on the matter:
https://blogs.akamai.com/2014/04/heartbleed-a-history.html#more
The most likely issue is that their security updates have broken the ability of older AppleTVs to connect. They may start working again when Akamai is done. Or the changes may require a patch from Apple. Right now, we don't know.
I say all this in the hopes of defusing any conspiracy theories around Apple deliberately bricking older units. That seems highly unlikely and Akamai's situation, combined with the earlier poster's analysis of network traffic on his system, suggests the simplest explanation.
Of course, Apple's failure to communicate about this issue is ridiculous. But my guess is it will start working again within a few days.
Thanks for the piece of mind. I will sit tight and see what develops
Cheers
Same issues here in Scotland, UK. Unable to access itunes content on my Apple TV 1st Gen. Good to know it's a worldwide problem & hopefully apple resolve it soon. If not then bye bye itunes!
Thanks for what seems to be a logical explanation for the problem i am experiencing here in Australia. It however still does not excuse Apple for not giving its customers a heads up on what they are currently experiencing. when customers are experiencing problems with a company's product, it is an ideal time (great PR opportunity) for a company to show what they are made of by speaking out at the time of the issue and keeping them informed. Being silent, shows zero care for its customers.Apple are you hearing this ?????
I have same issues with my ATV Gen1. Cannot access iTunes nor sync with iTunes on Mac. Can only sync photos from my Mac. Can access photo's and music on it. Only use it for music (ripped lossless collection and some purchased content) and a large photo collection. No stuttering that others are experiencing but I do have issues with any of my remotes and iPhone remote app sticking when going through the menus, skipping songs or searching through content etc.
Have Gen 3 as well. No issues other than being slow to download photo's and music from the Cloud but I put this down to a slow internet connection. Thats why, and when, I fired up the old Gen 1 to listen to some music (from Gen 1 harddrive rather than relying on Cloud/Internet connection) and discovered the no access to iTunes issue.
Incidently I have constant connection issues with HDMI which is why I still have my Gen 1 as I can at least access my music (via optical connection to my amp) using the Remote app on my iPhone.
That makes a lot of sense. I like it, more than my upgrade rumor theory. Thanks johntynes!
Although I use my ATV1 on a daily basis I had not used the ATV1 Internet radio option in some time and had no idea it had been disabled. Is the issue we are all experiencing also the cause of the radio being disabled or is that intentional? Can anyone point me to an Apple announcement or any official information on the radio aspect of the ATV1 being killed?
Nice update! Thanks for the info!
