I'm experiencing this problem as well with a 1st gen Atv. It is accessing the Internet, but won't access movies, music or tv.

"not working well" translates to "not working at all"

"minor event"? I bought the ATV G1 for two main reasons: Buying/renting movies and watching content on an external HDD (which required a jailbreak). Your "minor event" translates to 100% of the default capabilities of this device for which I purchased it not working.

. . .

I think the right escape plan is that we are all addicted to media - we should all unplug for a bit. As Steve Jobs used to say - there is no real solution today for TV, we have suboptimal results for all the choices. For example. where I live I can't even get broadband cable and my ADSL is limited to around 3-8 Mbtsps. My cable, Amazon, Apple, etc all offer partial solutions, too slow for streaming. I think people that are disgruntled should try other services and see how they work. So far, everything points to the Internet sadly without all of the security risks asscoaieted - inclduing reliability and availabity issues. My AppleTV has been good for almost six years running, and in our modern world that is better than cars for availability, reliability and use. OverallI I'm happy with my 1st AppleTV till now, and like most consumers I don't like it when I loose something. I want to run it as long as I can, as my Internet is not really fast enough. So I'll be patient for a while. I don't think this even would make me reevaltaute Apple, seems like a mountain out of mole hill and after all AppleTV is a "hobby". Apple has not changed its status on that one since it debuted, they are still trying to work out a better outcome.

The Apple Media Streaming service that ATVs use might be completely seperate, but the following article describes a fault late last week with BBC and Sky's video-on-demand TV services (both experienced problems on iPhones and iPads). The fault appeared to be limited to iPlayer, Sky Go and Now TV on Apple's iOS platform. The fault was addressed with a technical solution around the time and date that the ATV G1s started exhibiting issues with syncing to hosted content. Could be a sheer coincidence though. http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-27062516

(MacHiavelli on macrumors pointed out this link above., thanks Mac)

Additionally I have seen posts in the last few days which claim that itunes on Windows XP Sp2 and iTunes version 9.2.1 now no longer work. Could these outages be linked somehow?

With the possibility of systems affected by heartbleed, if its not affecting the sites that host the media could it or another outage have taken down other external provider links that the service connects to thus breaking the connections to clients?

not trying to raise suspisions or rumors but just trying to gather data incase it helps someone

Sure, but if this is Apple's exit strategy for the ATV1, which I seriously don't believe, it's got to be the worst I've ever seen.

These devices are programmed, by Apple, to keep trying to access the iTunes Store until Doomsday, or they are turned off in some way, or fry themselves in the effort.

I can't believe Apple will just leave things as they as these ATV1s at the moment are just nuisance value traffic on the Internet.

keep trying to access the iTunes Store until Doomsday 😁

I agree though. I dont think the current dilema was intended by Apple. The entire fault may have been completely unexpected or out of Apple's hands altogether. I expect we will hear something from them soon regardless. 🙂

On the chance they are working on a resolution, just thought Id highlight a few findings from the end user arena

Yes, I didn't mean they intended any of this and I believe they are working on it (but there are many who think it is deliberate).

If it's security related they won't of course tell anyone what's going on because that in itself presents an exposure.

At the risk of creating a lot of cross chatter I'm replying to this because it seems you left out the rest of the message re findings from the end user arena that I would like to know about, or perhaps I misunderstood.

Yes, well the bible says many things. But what does it say about managing critical infrastucuture? Apple has an increidbly massive infrastucture to manage due to iCloud, iTunes and the Mac App Store. There is a very great possiblity it is Heratbleed based on the timing, but it could be a result of another change, maybe one casued by a new product, like an all new Apple TV, long rumoured. Who knows, when it comes to technology could be 1000 reasons.

All of my clients are quietly woring behind the scenes to fix the broken Open SSL code in their servers. Some have had PR and blogging campaigns that have backfired, it has been difficult to get the message right / and or not ask for attackers to come after them, or worse, angry, hurt and wanting customers. This situtation calls for resileince, and Apple is a reslient company, events like this are things they actively try to avoid and they try to shape their environment. So my guess is there are soome very busy people focused on an actual fix. They may choose to manage a message, or to have little. If one looks at the recent major bug located in Mac OS and iOS, the way the company handled it was instructive - putting a fix out with little messaging. Apple is one of the biggest targets on the internet and their store of credit card data the holly grail for criminals. If I was Tim Cook, I would be very focused on protecting Apple's customers, iTunes and the incredibly valueable trust they place in the company and the value that has created.

I made a decision never to trust the cloud and so have always downloaded content to my iTunes Library, keep it there and sync to ATV1's as required. I have had to implement the "parental controls" fix but apart from that everything is still syncing as normal. All three ATV1's have 1.5TB drives in them for when we all travel (we are a fairly big family) but we fully expect support to stop eventually (perhaps when they produce another Apple TV that can actually play iTunes Extras!!!).

I think everybody needs to take a reality check. Can you point to any other computing technology in your house that is still in active use and predates 2007?

I remain a very happy user of all iTunes content in a house full of people (across 3 generations) that all use it all the time AND I don't have to support any of them. Show me a Plex or XBMC household that can make the same claim on any 2007 vintage device and I will eat my hat.

Stop complaining and be grateful with what you have.
