7.1.1 update crashed my iPhone 5

I updated to 7.1.1. After wirelessly downloading, I was instructed to plug my phone into iTunes. Once plugged in, it said my phone was in recovery mode and had to be restored to factory settings. I restored and tried to restore my last backup unsuccessfully. I lost every contact and picture of my two year old I have. Why did this happen?

Forgive my ignorance. I obviously came to the wrong place for help.

Since you actually weren't looking for help, rather to complain and blame, you really did come to wrong place. In your first post you asked for help with a backup restore problem, but then completely ignored request to give additional specific info, instead resorting to juvinile name calling (some of which had to be edited but the hosts).

My phone crashed too but in a different way! My apps wont open or are belaye, it won scroll, mostly it takes a long time to do anything that i ask. I need a fix!!

1. Double click the home button to show recently opened apps and side the preview screen up to close them.

2. Reset phone (no data loss): press both the home and power buttons for at least 10 seconds, releasing when the Apple logo appears.

Well yeah, the phone kind of requires you to restore to factory settings and then you get the option to back up...

So yes, and that's my point. The pictures from the time of the backup should be on the phone, correct? What I'm saying is - they're not, so even if everyone else had backed up their pictures, I'm not sure they would have gotten to keep them either.

No, you get the option to RESTORE an existing backup. If you back up after restoring to factory settings, there will be nothing in that backup.

I have restored backups many, many times, both from iCloud and iTunes on my computer and 100% of my 800+ photos were always restored - along with everything else in the backup. Never lost anything. Know many others who restored backups without any loss.

If photos were not restored to your phone, they were never in the backup you restored.

Sorry, that's what I meant.

(I'm tired.)

I know backups usually work they way they're intended to, but then again, so do updates, but that obviously didn't happen this time.

No idea why the phone specifically told me it was backing up photos and then they're absent from the backup. Something's wrong there, because I'm going off of what the phone said it was backing up. :/

Oh well, there's nothing that can be done now. I still stand behind what I said earlier, though, because this update also seems to have corrupted some people's latest backups (they weren't able to backup to latest one), so I don't know.

Mine just did this too. I showed there was an update so I installed in wirelessly (without connecting to computer - using someone elses right now) and it turned off as usual then turned back on and it showed the itunes icon and a plug icon underneath it. I have no way to contact anyone as this phone is my only means of contact. I didn't select anything to have it reset to factory but when I plugged it into this computer it said that my phone has gone into recovery mode. I don't know a lot about technical stuff. So why did my phone crash???

EDIT: I dont know what the original poster what talking about but my phone is not able to be recovered. I don't know why this has happened. Years of IMPORTANT info was on my phone. I'm not here to complain though, I am trying to find out why did my phone reset itself?? I didn't choose any options for it to wipe itself out. So why did it do it on its own? I was not prompted to back up anything, NOTHING. Just clicked the update and let it go. Saw it turn off, as it always has, then it turned on and I saw the itunes icon and the plug icon.

No, I understand restoring to a backup.

You weren't affected, so you really don't understand what I'm trying to say.

I don't care if it's never happened before, but somehow, this update also affected people's backups. Some people cannot restore to a backup at all, others can't restore to the latest backup, and apparently, some people's backups are missing things. So you cannot say that updates can't corrupt backups, since it's obviously happening to many people.

I understand both what you're trying to say and that you don't understand what you're saying.

If you understood what is being posted here (taking into account the very vague descriptions and misuse of terminology), the problem is both lack of backup in the first place and restoring old backups which are "missing" more recent info on the phone.

Restoring backups is all or none - parts of it CAN'T go missing. If a backup doesn't work, nothing gets on the device. Maybe you don't have the technical knowledge and experience to understand this.
