7.1.1 update crashed my iPhone 5

I updated to 7.1.1. After wirelessly downloading, I was instructed to plug my phone into iTunes. Once plugged in, it said my phone was in recovery mode and had to be restored to factory settings. I restored and tried to restore my last backup unsuccessfully. I lost every contact and picture of my two year old I have. Why did this happen?

If it works now, why do you think you have a hardware problem?

If you do have a hardware problem, you get a free replacment from Apple only if the warranty is still in effect and there is no evidence of abuse (such as water damage).

If not, you may be elegible for an out of warranty replacemet with a refub unit, price depending on iPhone model and country you're in

My 4s just bricked after update. I have never had an iPhone or iPad brick prior to iOS 7 updates. This has been the second time it has happened to iPhone and luckily only once on the iPad. This is a major pain. What happens I you don't have a PC or Mac to plug iPhone/iPad into? Always losing apps as they have been pulled from App Store.

After the update my iPhone 5 began shutting down and restarting. In the time it took to try and write a message to my office about my phone not working and to not forward calls it would shut down. After about 7 attempts it would not restart. Tried home button - sleep reset with no luck. Drove back to office to recharge phone thinking battery had died, unusual since it was only 9:30 AM and phone had been just disconnected from charger at 8:00AM. When I plugged it in it went into a reboot loop with the gray background and black apple logo. This would appear then go black then reappear over and over. Desperate to have a working phone I put phone in restore mode to try and restore with ITunes. After connecting to iTunes and downloading software update on office computer the restore failed with 2001 error. Went home at lunch to try on home computer using three different cords still same error. Went to AT&T store after work and salesperson suggested using their computer in authorize new phone mode. This time the phone was restored and I had hoped all was well. First thing I did was to go to phone and setup call forwarding in anticipation that it still may not be solved. Good thing I did because before I returned home it shut down again and restarted twice.

At home I started checking Apple Discussions and found a suggestion from a reader RJM about toggling silence button and then using the sleep home button to restart the phone. I tried it and the phone was staying on. I now had a phone with the initial apps and it was not shutting down. I am now going to add back my apps and see how it goes.

It edited telling you to "go be someone else's thorn in the flesh, have a nice day." I'm astonished it has left half of how you have talked down to most everyone on here. This will probably be edited too. My initial response to you was in defense of the person you told her pictures were not valuable enough to backup. THAT was uncalled for. Just help. You don't have to insult when someone has a problem. You obviously know more than most people on here. I backed up everything 2 months ago and it is now telling me every backup I have ever done is corrupt when I try to restore a past backup.

So I had the "connect to iTunes" thing happen to me too. I did not jailbreak my phone nor was it a hardware problem. The problem was that a server crashed while I was updating and that's why I had to connect to iTunes. The reason I continued to have problems restoring my phone was because a firewall on my work computer was blocking it from happening.

Originally, I called Apple and was told that I had to pay $19 to even speak to someone. I called my service provider and they connected me with Apple for free. The service technician deduced that it was the work computer causing the issue. I switched to a different computer and my phone is restored and fully functioning and I didn't lose anything.

If you are still having issues, I suggest calling Apple. I hope this helps.

Same thing happened to me as well. I have an iPhone 5 & after it said "verifying update" for about 20 minutes I was told to connect to iTunes to do a factory reset. I contacted Apple support about this issue and they told me that it was the first time they have heard about it. Needless to say, iTunes has been downloading 1 item for a few hours & I really don't see my phone coming back on any time soon. So disappointing.

This is clearly a major issue that Apple needs to fix. Everyone is having the same issue, and iCloud backup is also failing. Ive lost many photos and videos from the IIFA Awards here in Tampa this week, and a YouTube video that was due to be uploaded last night. It was all backed up to iCloud successfully, then I attempted to do the iOS 7.1.1 update and the phone bricked up. Once restoring to factory settings, iTunes reported that the last time I had done a backup of my phone was at 12:24 this morning - when the phone was restored. The old backup, which had been done as recently as yesterday morning, is no longer available. Its a 64GB phone in my case, too, which means a lot of data has been lost. This is upsetting.

At this point only a personal email and phone call from Tim Cook himself would satisfy me - I am furious.
