Its working as designed - following quote is from http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5949

To configure Touch ID, you must first set up a passcode. Touch ID is designed to minimize the input of your passcode; but your passcode will be needed for additional security validation:

  • After restarting your iPhone 5s
  • When more than 48 hours have elapsed from the last time you unlocked your iPhone 5s
  • To enter the Touch ID & Passcode setting

I have had this happen to me as well. It was always when I would unlock the

phone first thing in the morning. It is not commonly happening (4 times in the past

month). I never had the keyboard lock up and was able to enter the passcode.

I don't think it mattered whether it was charging over night or not.

I have a 6S that I got at the end of September, so it has happened over the span

of the updates.

I Wonder if just restarting the phone will help.

I have not noticed any pattern. I'm guessing that there's one of 2 things going on. An internal counter keeping track of time since last unlock and the unlock events aren't being fired properly because something crashed. Or the unlocks are time stamped and are being done so incorrectly.

I don't think this is an iOS 9 thing. I've seen it twice: once several months ago, while still on iOS 8.x.x, and once this morning, on 9.1. My iPhone 6+ is going on a year old. It's not linked to any corporate network or Exchange server. It's purely a personal phone. I have a complex passcode and, like seemingly every other affected user here, I'm in and out of the phone many times each day. I haven't changed the passcode or restored the phone or taken any other unusual action. The only thing the two times I've run into this bug have in common is that both times, I put the phone on the charger with a relatively high percentage of charge still on the battery and left it on the charger all night. It's ALMOST as though the OS doesn't like being "overcharged". I know that the OS isn't what gets charged and I also know that thinking this bug has something to do with a battery that can't actually be overcharged is grasping at straws big time, but I also know for sure that nothing Apple offers in the way of explanation applies to me or my phone. I'll be as interested as the rest of you to see what the issue was, if we ever find out.

To me, it doesn't make any sense how charging could have anything to do with it.

I'm going to try the soft reset soon.

Hi Anne,

Yes, I also noticed that most of the time it happens the keyboard is also unresponsive. I do not have to reboot, but have to use the power button to switch the screen off and then on again. Sometimes I have to do this a few times before the keyboard becomes useable enough for me to enter the passphrase.

By unresponsive, I mean that it might allow a few keys and then get stuck. Sometimes it eventually allows typing again, but most of the time it happens I just switch off the screen and try again.

I have not had the keyboard issue on 9.1.3 yet and I have an iPhone 5S.

My iPad air 2 did it again to me last night, while my iPhone 6 plus did not. Both are running iOS 9.1. Both were used in a different time zone earlier in the day and the previous night, which is the only possible characteristic I've seen under repeat episodes of this issue. During time in the other time zone, the iPad air has been connected to a hotel's wifi, so has the iPhone. But the iPhone goes back onto LTE data prior to crossing time zone again. When arriving in my home time zone, my iPhone was still using LTE data prior to turning on its wifi at home. The iPad air's first network connection again was wifi at home. So is there any commonality to these activities with anyone else experiencing the problem?

I've recently started having this same problem and I don't work outside my home. I have no connection to any company and have set all settings myself. I can't pinpoint when this problem started occurring; it could well be since the ios9 update, as it's a recently-occurring problem. I'm always logging into my iPhone 6 using my Touch ID. The longest I go without logging in is usually overnight, 7-8 hours at most. Every few days I'll wake up to the message that I must enter my password because it's been longer than 48 hours since I've logged on...NOT! I thought maybe my phone was having clock issues, but given the other posts here, now I'm guessing it's a new bug...great!

This is happening to me too. I have a 5s which I didn't update until 9.02 and a iPad Air which I updated from 9.0.

SInce the 9.1 it hasn't happened until 7/11 but this time it had also put my phone on call forwarding as well, not very good for a medic on call. Thank goodness I still have landline too. I have noticed the settings is open in the mornings once a week though when I check my phone and pad and it definitely was closed when I went to bed. Perhaps it's linked

I've done several soft resets over the course of time this has been happening; they've not made a difference. Assuming Apple hasn't already been notified, I think they should definitely be alerted. Given that many people are having the problem, it's pretty likely this is a bug. Don't be surprised if the 48-hour message shows up again, even though you haven't seen it since your soft reset.
