I bought a new MacBook Air after Apple announced the Early 2014 refresh but when I check under About this Mac it shows Mid 2013.
Is this normal?

The newest MBAirs just came out about ten days ago so yes it's normal.
Mid2013 refers to the manufaturing date of your mac. Its normal.
Oh ok, but my Mac is a CTO so it was manufactured this year. I've seen videos of the new Macs and it shows Early 2014.

Hi, I've got the exact same issue, Apple have sent out a replacement but i've just checked the serial number and it's showing Mid 2013 again. What should I do?

The differences go beyond firmware.
I've just spoken to Apple, apparently they are going to release an update soon that will change the information for new MacBook Airs from Mid 2013 to Early 2014.
Glad I found this, I've just ordered one cto and from the serial number it's also showing as mid 2013, whilst it won't bother me much it may well affect the resale value in a few years when I upgrade so hopefully they'll get it sorted!
I'm in the same boat. Well, even if they release an update it won't change the information about the manufacturing year (2013) printed on the back. It will definitely affect the resale value. I'm going to call Apple tomorrow and ask for a replacement.
Apple has not changed the model numbers between the 2014 MacBook Air and the 2013.
Assuming you purchaed a 13" model, here is its tech spec:

Note it says you have a 1.4GHz processor.
Here is the mid-2013 spec:

Note it indicates a 1.3GHz processor.
That is how you can tell you have a 2014 machine. Check the processor speed under "About This Mac."
Yep seems that whilst they updated the hardware inside they didn't change anything else,I've arranged a return today - it's essentially paying for a 2014 car model but getting a slightly better 2013 model,not going to take the hit on the resale value when I upgrade in a few years! Am very much swaying towards a refurb retina mbpro,less money that the air and I saw the screen on one today for the first time beside an air - night and day difference!
Yeah, I've just received the replacement two days ago but having read about Apple's plan to announce the Retina MBA's at WWDC i'm tempted to return this replacement and wait a week. What would you do? I'm double minded.
A lot more money I bet for Retina...
My apologies did not see this before posting mine, I have the same issue with my MBA customized 8GB ram, and got off long call with Apple Support but they wouldn't entertain me for a replacement. Seeing this, I might just insist again for a replacement.
