iTunes 11.2 Crashes On Startup

Allowed the suggested upgrade from iTunes 11.1.5 to 11.2. Unfortunately, iTunes crashes on startup. I have attemted fixes for previous versions of iTunes to no avail (updating Quicktime, and adding "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support" to the PATH).

I can successfully launch iTune in safe mode by holding the CTRL-SHIFT keys down.

Anyone else having the same problem? Anyone know what to do?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

Hi turingtest2:

I was experiencing the same Windows error message (event name BEX) as the original poster and Windows data execution prevention (DEP) kept shutting down iTunes after I updated from v. 11.1.4 to 11.2.2 on my 32-bit Vista computer.

Your suggestion to remove all iTunes components and reinstall as described in your user tip Troubleshooting issues With iTunes for Windows updates (including right-clicking on the installer and choosing "Run as Administrator") seems to have solved the problem. Cheers!!

Sadly, I rebooted my 32-bit Vista computer this morning and it appears that removing and reinstalling all iTunes v. 11.2.2 components didn't completely solve the problem.

I'm now able to use iTunes but when I close the program my hard drive thrashes and my computer freezes for about 30 seconds, followed by a DEP pop-up in my system tray stating: iTunes closed. To help protect your computer, Data Execution Prevention has closed iTunes. I monitored the shutdown with Process Explorer and the iTunes.exe process doesn't appear to be shutting down properly - the CPU usage column for this process says "Suspended" for the 30 seconds or so until DEP kills the process.

I've posted details of the Windows error (event name BEX) that accompanies the DEP pop-up here in nl220's thread iTunes 11.2 keeps getting shut down by Dell Data Protection.

This may be unrelated, but signing out of the iTunes store when you start up the program kept it from crashing for me. You have to do it as quick as possible from the Store menu right after it boots.

I have only experienced this after upgrading. Signing into the iTunes store crashes the program, so I know that seems to be the culprit. I don't know the fix to this issue, but at least have it identified.

For those who are getting a crash on startup, it may be because iTunes is set to automatically sign in on startup.

Hi mvsuriano:

I signed out of the iTunes Store (Store | Sign Out) and opened and closed iTunes a few times, and still get the DEP iTunes was closed error about 30 sec after the GUI is closed.

Hi turingtest2:

I also tried Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Reset iTunes Store Cache and clicked on Reset Cache, but it made no difference.

I'm beginning to wonder if this has something to do with a memory leak. I noticed a large jump in the working set and virtual size of iTunes.exe when iTunes is shut down - the virtual size sometimes climbs to 500 MB or more after I exit iTunes. I don't know if this is normal behaviour for iTunes.exe since I've never bothered to monitor this process during an iTunes shutdown before.
