MacBook Air Mid 2014 but shows Mid 2013

I just received my MacBook Air yesterday, the latest 1.4GHz i5 processor, customized to 8GB ram, and after setting it up and installing/updating everything i need (took me whole night to that), I looked into "About This Mac" and it says there "Mid 2013", everything else in System Report is as per the latest model. I checked the box before I opened, and everything is also as per specification, but I would assume it should say "Mid 2014".

I'm on the phone with Apple Support as I type, earlier was on the online support chat, and they were as baffled how did this happen. They even offered a replacement but I will need to send it back. Now that I am on the phone with them, the only explanation they gave me is that, ALL the new MacBook Air's says "Mid 2013", that indicates hardware date, despite them being "new". And assured me there's no issue with it.

I argued that depreciates the value of the MacBook Air almost immediately, and I felt cheated buying a 2014 model but instead I got 2013 hardware! And since I have been on hold for 20 minutes at least, while they check. A senior advisor came on and explained, that as there were no major changes in the MacBook Air, it is still Mid 2013 model BUT the specifications are 2014.

Based on that explanation, I assume EVERY MacBook Air with the 1.4GHz processor that was released this year, should say Mid 2013. BUT if there is even one that says 2014, I believe every owner would want one. And I stressed to the support personnel that if at any time I find one that says 2014, I will refer back to this case and demand for a replacement.

So if other owners would just post your "About This Mac" and verify this explanation, for the benefit of everyone.User uploaded file

According to specs mentioned in MacTracker ( a download http://mactracker.ca ) the

current listing for MacBook Air of both 11" and 13" models from April 2014 build are

both Early 2014; and have model build identifiers, EMC numbers, etc, to show they

are different.

•MacBook Air (13 - inch, Early 2014)

Introduced April 2014

Discontinued --

Model Identifier MacBookAir6,2

Model Number A1466

EMC 2632

Order Number MD760LL/B (128 GB storage), MD761LL/B (256 GB storage)

•MacBook Air (11 - inch, Early 2014)

Introduced April 2014

Discontinued --

Model Identifier MacBookAir6,1

Model Number A1465

EMC 2631

Order Number MD711LL/B (128 GB storage), MD712LL/B (256 GB storage)

The 13-inch MacBook Air, Mid-2013, shows these numbers:

Introduced June 2013

Discontinued April 2014

Model Identifier MacBookAir6,2

Model Number A1466

EMC 2632

Order Number MD760LL/A (128 GB storage), MD761LL/A (256 GB storage)

Initial Price $1,099 (128 GB storage) $1,299 (256 GB storage)

And the 11-inch MacBook Air, Mid-2013, shows these:

Introduced June 2013

Discontinued April 2014

Model Identifier MacBookAir6,1

Model Number A1465

EMC 2631

Order Number MD711LL/A (128 GB storage), MD712LL/A (256 GB storage)

Each model in the Apple Store (main online) offers the option of higher CPU.

These also may appear in an Apple retail store in cities where they exist.

Without looking further than the superficial information, one has to know the EMC &

model identifier; and other numbers (accessed by serial number, model build, etc)

there usually is mis-identification, at times certain specs may be mis-quoted as well.

And as with most of the numbers that get recycled in a series, note Order number.

Is there really a 'mid-2014' model in circulation?

Call the main Apple Store and talk to a product specialist about this, if you want to know.

There does not appear to be a defect in packaging or in the nomenclature of these.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

You are right, Apple NEVER made a computer that was Mid 2014

They do however make EARLY 2014

and they do exist,

Punch this serial number into Apple's support site

https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do

C02MGJ7XG085

And if you want more prof that this is an issue, just ask Apple, they have a whole internal support document on the fact that this is an unresolved issue.

Also MD760LL/A is your PART number not order number

That is a Mid 2013 model with a 1.3 Ghz Core i5 Processor and 4 GB of Memory,

If you had an Early 2014 model it would have the part number MD760LL/B

However in Apple's backend and software some MD760LL/B models are showing up as Mid 2013 even though they are not, as they have the 1.4 Ghz core i5

I did call Apple,

There are NOT Mid 2014 models, but ARE EARLY 2014 models

Apple Care told me there IS a defect in nomenclature, it is a known issue and they are working on a fix. I went into the Apple Store and they told me the same thing again.

They even pulled up an official Apple document on an iPad mini.

If there is a 'defect' it does not affect most of the user comments here.

And a future 'firmware update' could easily fix an alleged problem; a

situation where the computer nor its function are adversely affected.

Some difference in specification can be found if one uses several of

the online databases where you enter a serial number to see when

(month/day/year, model identifier, early/mid/late) a model was built

or where, so this can be a source of issues if one is attempting to

upgrade or update a specific model; and it is one you can upgrade

RAM or other parts. Since most new models you cannot, no issue.

{A few of those online lookup-by-serial-number sites may not be

secure, so that may not be a best place to submit your info, btw.}

Anyway, the minor differences in these specs, real or typos, should

not make much of a factual one. And if within 14 days of purchase

if a buyer does not like any of the details, simply return it to Apple...

I usually get pre-buyer's remorse; saves me a lot of trouble later.

Good luck & happy computing! 😐

I must support what grahas said. Heres what I did.

1. Chatted with an Apple support. Although he isnt familiar with this issue, he does point out that customized 2014 DO EXIST and I should return mine. I should receive what I ordered, a customize 2014 model.

Bottomline: Existence of Customized 2014 Model / Not normal to see a Mid 2013 Model on customize.

2. Went to the store (Authorized Reseller) from where I bought my MBA. They have contacted Apple also and gave me insights that Apple is aware and working a solution to this "symptoms" via update/software/whatever.

Bottomline: This situation is not normal. And hopefully get a solution fast.l

3. I ask a for a professional advice from someone I know. (an IT/Compsci).

Question: Now that specs are the same as seen, should I pursue a 2014 model from a 2013 i got, besides for the reason of Economic/resell value?

Answe: YES.

Reason: Although she said that shes not really familiar with Apple but she gave me a GENERAL IDEA about motherboards of windows, (apple call these logic board). To give you an idea, Mother/logic board is like a parking space through which Processors/Rams/memory/everything are parked and communicated. Now even though you have the SAME specs/ram/processor/ from a 2014 to 2013, it doesnt follow or suggest that these two are the same.

She suggest logic/motherboards structures and technology sometimes differ if Model Year # differ. It suggest an improvement or maybe it is the same thing. (pertaining only to the Year it is manufactured). Now these minor improvements (if any) are not necessarily printed in the "Specs table in Apple Stores" for us to appreciate. For me, the reason maybe is because these are too technical for people or just minor improvements.

Example of an issue that may arise: Arguably 2014 & 2013 has the same Customize specs. Lets say in the next 3-5 Years, apple will update its OS. Now this update may not be suitable for 2013 but the 2014 may be able to handle it. Why? Because the technology engrave in 2013 is not the same as 2014. (Pertaining to Logic/mother board)

Bottomline: To appreciate the technical complexity that may arise, I cited #3's reason. She suggest that to avoid these and any domino effect, you should be getting what you ordered. A 2014 customized model and not settle for 2013. You did order for a 2014 after all!

Hope this helps! For everyone to know!

Jul 7, 2014 12:02 AM in response to franzzzzz

For everyone's info, i returned mine for the same reasons above-mentioned by franzzzzz, and technically, something in the machines must be from 2013, otherwise there's absolutely no reason why 2013 should appear anywhere on the machine or in the system, it's impossible that it's a mere glitch. I am also quite sure no firmware/hardware update would be issued to "address" 2014 units that is indicated as 2013. This is of course just my assumption, simply because it's not worth for Apple to do so, and they are not that stupid to not know this would happen when they decided to use some old parts in it, furthermore I see it's rather difficult to issue updates to just certain units and not affect others especially with small quantity of units affected.

My best guess is, there were "leftovers" of custom to built units from 2013, and these are of course not to be mixed with the standard 2014 model manufacturing, it's just a no-brainer business decision to use it up since it will not affect specifications.

By the way, Apple accepted my return even after the 14 days return period, I am not sure if they are honoring just because i raised a case within the period, or because my unit is also suffering from dead pixels (more than 5 pixels).
