ios 7.1.2 update stopped 1/3 way in

I am updating to ios 7.1.2. It downloaded, rebooted and stuck on the Apple screen with the progress bar around 1/3 done.

I can't switch the device off by holding the power button. Don't know what to do. Please Help!!

Hi,

Just to add my case to the thread in case someone at Apple is reading this, I had the same problem:

  • iPhone 5s with 7.1.1 installed
  • Started over the air (wifi) update (plugged) to 7.1.2
  • Everything went smoothly until my iPhone restarted to complete the installation process; the progress bar froze between 1/2 and 2/3 of the way
  • an hour went by and nothing happened ....

I posted in another thread and someone got back suggesting to reboot my iPhone using the 2 button restart. My phone seems OK now and updated. But I hate this because now I could be having a faulty installation and I have no way of checking, if not for tracking a possible increase in app crashing.

The same thing happened to me too on both my iPad Air and iPhone 5s. The update went on for more than 30 minutes without any improvement on the progress bar. After I did a hard reset by holding the lock and home button simultaneously, they both turned off. And when I turned them on again, they booted back to the home screen.

The General > About screen now shows both at Version 7.1.2. Good enough for me, considering iOS 8 is coming.

I have an iPhone 5S 64GB with 10GB free, and an iPad Mini with Retina 64GB with about 8GB free, and both ran into the stalled progress bar issue, the iPhone at 40%, the iPad at 69%. Doing a forced reset as described here by modular747 rebooted both and got me back into my lock screens, with installed versions showing 7.1.2.

As one poster here mentioned, it's possible this stall on the progress bar may have been related to the encryption of mail attachments running after the update. Someone also mentioned the mail bug was still there after the update. Were you referring to the encryption bug, and if so, how did you test for it?

I will be reporting this to Apple to have them look into it, as it's definitely not normal for a stall like this to occur.

Shutdown and power-on your device before upgrading. Always.

A device that's been in use for (even) a few days - with a bunch of background apps running - is less stable, with less available RAM. This affects the upgrade app's stability.

Just applied it to my iPhone 5s, which was running for about four days. Stuck at around 70%. Power-cycled my iPad Mini (running for 60 days), update applied flawlessly.

Just my 2 cents.

Same here ... on both iPhone and iPad. Downloaded 7.1.2, update started, got to about 1/3 of the way through progress bar and just froze. Resolution was to power-cycle them both... home button + power button for 5 secs. Device reboots, looks like it might try the update again (progress bar starts) but then it reboots again to my lock screen. Device says it's at 7.1.2 with no updates available. Reporting here just so we can see how big this issue is - I suspect MANY people may be having the same problem.
