iPhone not syncing mulitmedia after iOS 8 update

OS 10.7.5

iTunes 11.4 (18)

iPhone 5s iOS8

I just recently updated to iOS 8 and now I'm not able to sync my music and movies to my iPhone. The free space is not taken when the sync completes and the when selecting my iPhone and checking it's contents in iTunes, it shows both the music and video library that all the files that should be in there, but with an dashed circuit next to all of them (showing they were not synced).

Has anyone experienced this and what is the cause? Is this related to the iOS upgrade? More importantly, how can I resolve this?

Basically, I've only done a restart on both my iPhone and on my Mac after a restart in iTunes didn't work.

Edit: I should add that a few (less than 50) songs were actually added. What I did was remove all my movies and music prior to the iOS 8 update to clear space. Once the update went through (seems to have had no issues), I went to sync my playlists back. It was then I discovered that the files were showing they should be there, but were not actually synced.

I have experienced the same problem after updating to iOS8. I also, did not want to do a hard reset, but I have found one way that has completely corrected the problem without doing a hard reset.

(I am using the current version of iTunes on OSX 10.9.4 with "Sync only checked songs and videos" checked under the summary page in iTunes for your iPhone. I do not have iTunes Match as some people earlier I read have suspected that, that might be the issue if it was checked or not.)

- Sync/backup your iPhone with how you wanted it if you didn't have this problem normally in iTunes

- Now Eject/disconnect your iPhone from iTunes

- Go to your iPhone Settings> General>Usage> Manage Storage (the one under the "Storage" title)> Select Music out of the list> Tap "Edit" in the top right> Tap the Red circle next to All Songs under the "Music" title to delete all of the music off of your phone.

- Re-Sync your iPhone with your Mac and it should now load all of the music back onto your iPhone that you have chosen.

I have tapped on many songs out of the 1000+ on my phone and it has worked for everyone I have hit.

All thank you for all your suggestions. As for my latest update, I was able to get all my multimedia back onto my iPhone with no phantom files. I tried the restart, unplug, hard reset, plug in, stick your left leg and your right leg out, pray... basically the common things one would do when trouble-shooting an iPhone with iTunes. This also included a restore, which didn't fix the issue. This was my main concern, but most likely will be fixed in time. I fixed it basically by removing everything (meaning my movies, music, books, tones, photos) except my apps. With some combination of checks in the Options field in the Summary window, things began to sync again. John's latest response will be something I'll try next time (removing your data directly from the iPhone), then syncing them back. Unfortunately, I can't say what exactly fixed it and why, so I would say back your stuff up, then try them all.

Having the same issue.

Iphone 6 128GB.

What I think might be the issue at least for me, is it seems like port for the lightning connector is a bit loose from the factory and if i move the phone while syncing it has a tendency to interrupt the syncing process. It must have thrown some partial files and such into the mix creating the syncing issue.

I did what JohnEE1010 suggested and seems to sync properly now.

Maybe once stocks fill up I will return the phone and see if I have better luck with another one.

I am having the same issue, iTunes 11.4, OS X 10.6.8 and iOS8, with a 5s. Sync button is grayed out. The sync starts then immediately goes back to the apple icon. I cannot sync ANYTHING via the USB cable. I can't even set it to sync over wifi. I tried two different cables but nothing. This is a very poor release from Apple. It's also my first experience having no way back. I backed up prior to the upgrade, and restored it 3 times. I even reset the iPhone and still cannot get my music back on the iPhone. I can't do iCloud drive because my Macbook Pro is end of life at 10.6.8 so I may be one of those customers that will get left out in the cold without a solution. I should have never upgraded. I think the issue is more with iTunes than iOS8. But I am not a developer. I hope Apple comes up with a fix and quick. I feel like my iPhone has all this great capability but now I cannot enjoy my music on it....

Same issue here. I have an iPhone 6+ with 128GB and am using the most current OS and iTunes. I am unable to sync any media -- music, video, tv shows, audiobooks -- to my phone. But I am syncing apps. Everything synced fine on my 5S. I've tried everything I've read here (except there is no media on my phone to delete per johnee1010. I've tried rebooting the phone and my Mac. Nothing works. I still can't sync any media at all. Any other suggestions greatly appreciated.

I think you're on to something. However, my "Settings" app crashes each time I tap the "Music' storage setting, and I'm not able to get to the point where I can delete all the content on the handset itself.

I did try toggling the Sync all music option in iTunes and it "appeared" to have deleted everything. I turned sync back on, and some songs that didn't sync before did sync - but not all and it was ultimately the same issue. This is upsetting.

EDIT:
I have an iPhone 6+, 128GB (Gold)

Finally found a way to get the 'missing' songs to copy over.

So, on my handset, it "appeared" that all songs had synced, in that I could see the song in my Library, but when I try to play it it would skip the song (and subsequent songs) until it got to a song that had actually copied over onto the phone.

After skipping over a song(s), and then clicking "sync" in iTunes, that particular missing song(s) would then successfully sync in iTunes - and no longer be greyed out.

So on my handset I just started playing a song in my library and skipped through the entire playlist, which didn't take too long. Then in iTunes, I clicked "sync" and it successfully sync'ed over all the songs that had been greyed out.

I don't know if this issue will persist when I add new content to my library though. If so, that would mean these steps have to be repeated each time I want to sync new music to my phone.

tried to go back to a previous version and it did help for the songs now they sync but all my apps are messed up.

some are trying to install but get stuck and iTunes stops working before syncing the apps.

Awful beta test Apple did with us. rushing out IOS 8 so they can have it at the same time as the new iphone.

will try to recover again from a previous version.

I was able to fix the issue for my device.
Here are all the things that I tried but didn't quite work:
1. unchecking and rechecking 'sync the music'
2. managing content manually
3. restore with backup
4. physically deleting every song on the device in Settings -> Storage, and syncing back.
5. I've also tried checking and unchecking every single option related to iCloud and Stores.

NONE of these worked. They were just temporary solutions and all of the songs were deleted again whenever i tried to sync a new song

HOW I FIXED THE ISSUE PERMANENTLY: I had to make a full restore back to factory settings, WITHOUT a backup. I basically restored my device as a new one. Of course i lost app data but now the songs and everything else works perfectly fine. This is the ONLY solution I've found. You should still try everything else as this one is quite drastic. If you're able to make it work without such a restore then good for you. In my case, this is the only thing that worked.
