iPhone 5 home button issue iOS 8

iPhone 5 / 64GB / AT&T, previous OS: 7.1.2

After upgrading to iOS 8, single click the home button would sporadically bring up the multitasking screen, instead of going back to the home screen. This appears to happen regardless of what app I single click the home button in.

I have since performed the following:

1) Settings / General / Reset / Reset All Settings

2) Restore using iTunes, set up as a new phone

The issue persists.

I have then downgraded back to 7.1.2. The issue no longer appears. So this does not appear to be a hardware issue.

Anyone else seeing this?

I'm in the same boat. 16GB, iPhone 5 on Verizon. Nearly every time I click the home button I'm taken to the multitasking screen. Hit home again and I'm returned to the app that I was in previously (not home). This cycle continues up to 5 times, then finally it'll work. Very frustrating.

Update:

I have sent some diagnostic data to Apple. It is being looked at by engineers.

I was asked if this issue occurs only if I single-tap the home button in certain apps - for example: Apple native apps vs third party apps. My own observation (while I had iOS 8) was that it occurred sporadically regardless of the apps from which single-tap was performed.

If anyone has information in this regard, please append to this thread.

Seems random to me as well. Has happened the most in Safari, Messages, and the mail app. Also occurs in the Facebook app.

Still haven't run into this on my iPhone 5 model A1428, last 4 digits of SN#: FH1D (unlocked AWS T-Mobile phone).

I have observed that some mobile-aware web-sites via Safari aren't responding the same way as they were in the previous iOS (7.1.2), but otherwise have not experienced this home-button problem in any app -- whether Apple or 3rd party.

Same issue here, guys! Very frustrating!

I'm a chronic force closer of apps, and this bug is driving me insane. A previously simple task is now almost freezing my phone each time.

I can confirm that it occurs with both first AND third-party apps. It occurs quite randomly with lots of apps. Can't seem to find any rhyme or reason to why or when it happens. But it happens quite frequently, though not every time.

Hi alex,

It does not appear that, based on your posts, you have tried a reset of the device itself (not Settings>Reset, but a device reset): Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold both down until the Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Once the reset is complete, the "Slide to Unlock" screen will appear. See if that helps the issue for you at all. It's the first thing I do is my device starts acting whacky - especially after an iOS update.

Yes, I have the exact same problem as Alex since updating. I have also done all of the same things:

- soft reset, hard reset, erase all data (reloading from iCloud backup and also not reloading and just starting fresh), etc. And it's not just a third party app problem. Happens with all apps.

i cannot revert back to iOS 7.1.2 bc I think I've waited too long (but would be happy to be able to revert).

very very frustrating to use the phone now.

Hi Gail,

In fact, I did try the device reset as you mentioned (home+sleep buttons). Sorry I forgot to include this -- tried too many things.

But it did not help.

From what I gather, this is not a wide spread issue. I have checked with friends who have iPhone 5's and upgraded; and no one I personally know encountered this issue. But it's also not an isolated issue judging from the replies here.

I'm still waiting for Apple support to get back to me.

I believe as of right now Apple has not yet stop signing the 7.1.2 update, which means you can still downgrade to iOS 7. If you need instructions, see the link in post #4 of this thread.

You have exactly this problem too. When I plug my phone into my iMac and run the iPhone Configuration Utility, the console log is not showing as well. I opened a ticket on bug tracker but can't provide logs. Can anyone else? Running iOS 7.1.2 does not cause this bug. Really annoying! iPhone 5, model A1429.

I tried the links to download 7.1.2 IPSW from the RedmondPie (from the link in Post #4) - says "1 day left" for the download time. I guess either the link is dead or it actually is downloading that slow.....

Same here, iPhone 5.

Already tried resetting the home button and all settings (multiple times). Clean Install doesn't help either. Problem occurs randomly on stock and third-party apps. Pretty frustrating.
