iPhone 5 home button issue iOS 8

I have the same issue after updating to IOS8, I click the home button I'm taken to the multitasking screen.

hey guys and gals, I just called into Apple support and they do not have enough people calling in to report this. We need to get this fixed with the next update. Please call 1-800-myiPhone and report this so that cases can be created. I know it's annoying, but in the troubleshooting, we did turn on the assistive touch and did not experience any issues with that. Just possibly a fix for the interim.

To turn on assistive touch, go to settings>general>accessibility

Just called the help line and they are saying this is a hardware issue, Which seems strange that people are getting the problem after updating to IOS 8

This is definitely not a hardware issue as the problem does not occur on iOS 7.1.2. I have upgraded to iOS 8 where the problem occurs then downgraded to iOS 7.1.2 and the problem disappears. Anyone who calls the helpline should make this clear and file a separate bug report if possible. Also mention this on Twitter so word gets out. This really needs to be fixed in the next update! 😐

Same with my iPhone 5 A1429. It's clearly something that happened after updating to iOS 8, my Home Button is perfectly fine: it's important to note, for example, that when on Home Screen, if I don't double click, the task switcher isn't launched -- it only is when I'm in an app. Randomly, yes. How painful can an update be?

Just reported the issue to 1800myiphone. They said others have reported. And they seemed to agree with me that it's not a hardware issue.

For those with the issue, a temporary solution may be for you to enable the AssistiveTouch panel. I've been using it for years and I seldom use my hardware Home button. Hopefully, Apple with track this bug down.

AssistiveTouch floats a virtual button on-screen which can mimic all hardware buttons on the device:

Settings>General>Accessibility>AssistiveTouch: turn ON

*Note* If you power off the device using the AssistiveTouch panel (tap the on-screen AssistiveTouch button, Device>Lock Screen (tap and hold to power off)), you will NOT be able to power on the device if your Sleep/Wake (power) button *is not functioning*. You will need to connect the powered off device either to a PC's USB port or an external charger to power the device back on.

Just filled a bug report. Hope this gets solved with the next iOS 8 update.

same here on a 4s ... started to happen repeatedly just after the upgrade to iOS8. I did a reset of all settings, no change. Did then a full restore from backup, no change either. It's getting worse and worse, i.e. more and more frequently, as said single pressing the home button acts like a double press and launches the app switcher. This is driving me nuts 🙂 An update is needed and quick ! thanks.

Same issue here with an iPhone 4S. Reading this threat I didn't see anyone with this problem using an 5S or 6,6+. This could probably be some software change Apple made in iOS8 only looking to those iPhones with the Touch ID button and it is not working well for us with the old home button.

could be yes, as when I restart my 4S, there's a mention above the passcode area saying that I have to enter it "because" I restarted my phone. This is only relevant with TouchID equipped devices.

adding: did a second restore, to factory settings this time + backup, no change.

Yeah, I receive this passcode message as well after a reboot.

That happens for me too. I do wonder if TouchID code is causing this on older non TouchID devices.
