I found that changing the Home Click speed to "slow" from "default" helps.

Accessibility > Home-click speed > Slow

Please make sure you tell them in store that it is definitely not a hardware issue as a downgrade makes this problem go away. I'm thinking of taking my iPhone 5 into the store and refusing to leave until they can fix it. Really is annoying and I'm wondering if Apple have created this problem to force people to upgrade to the new iPhones.

Neither home-click speed nor "calibrating" the home button worked for me.

Having same issue on my iPhone 5. Single home button click acts as a double click bringing up the multitask screen. Mine also flashes in and out of the app with a single click. So annoying that I'm thinking of swapping to an older phone until and if this gets ironed out.

Im having the same issue Apple needs to fix this!

No problems on my iPhone 5 model MD295C/A. Everything seems normal.

Did you try any of the troubleshooting steps that have been suggested by other posters on this thread?

Just to update and summarize, thus far NONE of the following fixes work:

- erase and resetting the entire phone

- removing the "show in app switcher"

- changing the click speed of the home button from default to "slow" and "slowest" (neither worked)

- removing the enter passcode option altogether

- "recalibrating" the home button (probably voodoo, I agree)

However, I was able to finally downgrade my phone back to iOS 7.1.2 and it DID work. So clearly a software problem.

There are no "tricks" to solve te issue on 8.0. It's a software issue, downgrading (if still possible) soves it in 7.1.2 and 8 will work well when Apple releases an update with a fix. There isn't more to it, I think.

I don't have high hopes that this will be fixed any time soon.. So I have also just downgraded to iOS 7.1.2, it is still possible right now. Home button works flawlessly on 7.1.2

I recommend everyone to also downgrade as long as it's still possible. Unfortunately, I didn't have an older iTunes backup (iOS 8 overwrote my previous iCloud backup for 7.1.2). Be aware that you cannot restore your settings and data on iOS 7 if you only have backups from after upgrading to iOS 8. Not a big issue, just make sure you save your pictures and export any files from within apps (e.g. GoodReader), you may need. However, there is some stuff you will lose (e.g. save games from games that do not sync with Facebook or game centre).

there's word that iOS 8.0.1 has been sent to carriers, should be out soon ... as to whether or not it will include a fix for the home button on non touchID devices ... no idea of course ... one thing is sure, I'm not ready to wait until 8.1 is out in one or too months from now, this bug ('cause that's a software bug very obviously) is a very annoying bug and must be fixed NOW ! Thank you.

Why would it take 2 or 3 months .. if it has been sent to the carriers..

you misunderstood my post: 8.0.1 has been ... not 8.1
