iPhone 5 home button issue iOS 8

iPhone 5 / 64GB / AT&T, previous OS: 7.1.2

After upgrading to iOS 8, single click the home button would sporadically bring up the multitasking screen, instead of going back to the home screen. This appears to happen regardless of what app I single click the home button in.

I have since performed the following:

1) Settings / General / Reset / Reset All Settings

2) Restore using iTunes, set up as a new phone

The issue persists.

I have then downgraded back to 7.1.2. The issue no longer appears. So this does not appear to be a hardware issue.

Anyone else seeing this?

Today, my phone is almost unusable. The home button is malfunctioning about 80% of the time. I'm going to give this until the next update. If it's not fixed in 8.0.2, it's back to the Apple Store. iOS 8 broke my phone. We all have iPhone 5's in my house, and I'm the only one who has this problem. So, I should be able to be a replacement that works. I hate to trade in a phone that is malfunctioning because of a software bug, but Apple broke it. Thanks to Apple Care, they're going to fix it.

This is a software bug, pure and simple. No little remedies like pressing the home button or rebooting will do anything. We simply have to wait for Apple to provide a fix via a software update. I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with the third party keyboards either (though the code is buggy as well, though I believe unrelated to this issue), because then we would be seeing this on 5S's and 6's.

The fact is, iOS 8.0 has lots of bugs all over the place and while it's unfortunate, it's also quite common with x.0 releases. Apple then spends the next couple months fixing all the bugs they were unable to find/uncover during beta testing. This doesn't make Apple a bad company (they're certainly not the only company this happens to) and they're not releasing buggy software intentionally, it's just a reality of complex systems with yearly big software updates. As much beta testing as they can do, there's always things that slip through the cracks that show themselves once millions and millions of people update their devices.

How did you go about downgrading to 7.1.2?

Apple does not provide a downgrade path for iOS.

Yes, they do!

Don't listen to the foolish people who rudely post terse "Apple doesn't support roll-backs" messages. At this time, Apple is finally beginning to acknowledge the troubles caused by iOS 8 (especially iOS 8.0.1). They are allowing both roll-backs to iOS 8.0.0 and also back to iOS 7.1.2.

I don't have the official URL but go to the OSXdaily news feed or just Google iOS 8 to 7.1.2 downgrade. You'll find everything you need to know.

Let this be a lesson to all! Don't be so keen to update to the latest iOS. Wait! Let those crazy, but lovable, early adopters find all the inevitable bugs!

I followed someone's suggestion to remove Swiftkey from my device. Then I rebooted. afterwards, my phone was a lot more stable. The home button problem occurred about 10% of the time I was pressing the button. I have since reinstalled Swiftkey, and my phone is almost not usable. I don't think it's caused by the presence of a third party keyboard. I'm assuming that the iOS code that allows for third party keyboards is either causing or contributing to this condition. Which, to me, makes some logical sense since home button presses constitute input to the device. That's why I'm hoping that making the third party keyboard code in the OS will eventually help with the home button issue.
