iPhone 5 home button issue iOS 8

iPhone 5 / 64GB / AT&T, previous OS: 7.1.2

After upgrading to iOS 8, single click the home button would sporadically bring up the multitasking screen, instead of going back to the home screen. This appears to happen regardless of what app I single click the home button in.

I have since performed the following:

1) Settings / General / Reset / Reset All Settings

2) Restore using iTunes, set up as a new phone

The issue persists.

I have then downgraded back to 7.1.2. The issue no longer appears. So this does not appear to be a hardware issue.

Anyone else seeing this?

8.0.2 installed here : DOES NOT FIX ANYTHING ... okay, just fed up... guess they'll fix it in one or two months now, after the new iPads and Macs etc... are out. That's the problem with Apple, they often release patches when it's convenient for them, not for us. Unless it's an emergency, and they don't consider this home button issue on iPhones 4S and 5 an emergency.

I fixed this problem recalibrating the home button:

Follow this steps:

STEP 1: Open an app. Any default iOS app. (Weather, Clock etc.)

STEP 2: Hold the Sleep/Wake button (Power) till the ‘Slide to power off’ appears.

STEP 3: Now press and hold the home button till the slide goes away and you get to the homescreen. Done. You’ll notice that the app is closed.

Ok, i don't know if i jump the gun here......but it seems as if 8.0.2 has solved the problem for me. I have had this issue since day one with 8.0. Today one press on the home button has taken me to the multitask view perhaps 6 out of 10 times.

An hour ago i updated to 8.0.2 and i haven't seen the home button issue once since then *knock knock*.

We wait. There will be a software fix coming for this. Just because Apple has issued new software to fix SOME bugs, doesn't mean they're done (there are many many more bugs to squash besides this one and many of them are higher priority, so it is what it is).

What can you do? Keep this thread alive so that others can see it and add to it. You can also take your iPhone into an Apple store so the geniuses log the issue. You likely won't get a replacement of any kind, but when the geniuses know, it goes up the ladder and a greater chance it gets fixed via software update quicker.

This has nothing to do with the iPhone 6 plus, which uses completely different home-button hardware. You can't tap the home button on an iPhone 5 like you can on the 5S, 6 and 6+ (those have touchID home buttons, not the old kind like the 5 and every previous iPhone had). Completely different situation. And that's also a feature on the 6+ you can turn off as well (it's called "Reachability").
