No service on iPad 2 GSM after upgrade to iOS 8
Anybody have the same issue or a solution. I have done all the support tips restore etc.

My turning off all the sync sliders in iCloud as I posted before in addition to turning off use Cell Data really works, now for two days. So it's definitely iCloud trying to sync over the 3G that causes it, at least in my case. The hard part was to turn it completely off. Maybe you can give Apple this hint, that would tell them exactly which piece of code has the bug.
This fix just worked for me also, thank you! Wonder why Apple is so silent and unhelpful on this? They are beginning to act like Microsoft!
That progress. I noticed this thread has over 16,000 views. I'm sure Apple monitors it, which is a bit disappointing and not great PR, for a usually proactive company. Anyway, I have a Genius Bar date on Wednesday. I will just keep restarting it, and definitely print and show them your results.
THanks!
i have been to genius bar twice. My iPad has been reset. Still no service. It's not the antennae as they might try to make you believe. One Apple employee told me the iPad can't keep up with the iOS 8 operating system. So my guess is apple won't/can't fix it. I'm not holding my breatH. This is just a way for Apple to get us to buy new iPads.
Oddly, as of this moment I have not "lost service" since yesterday and I haven't changed anything. I will see what the Genius Bar person has to say, but wiping it clean clearly from your experience, isn't the answer. Neither is buying a new one. Maybe they will magically fix it via the cloud, like they magically surprised us with a free U2 album, whether we wanted it or not. LOL. I will both keep you posted and stay tuned for more info.
The easiest way to quickly get service back on my ipad2 is to simply open icloud settings. I don't even have to change any settings, because as soon as i tap on icloud in settings, my ipad connect to service again. Crazy, but a lot quicker than restarting. For me, it works as a temporary solution, and I hope it works for others as well. Have been doing this once a day for a few days now.
Bugwigs, yes, this works for me, too. Just select "Settings" on the Home page, then select "iCloud" and wait for 6 to 10 seconds. I have been using this for weeks, and it always works. However, "No Service" returns within a few hours, or maybe the next day.
For everyone else, please don't believe everything the Apple Store Geniuses say to you. They are very good at the things they have been specifically trained on, but they are just as weak-minded as anyone when they start speaking from their "common sense knowledge" of how things should be. On multiple occasions over the years I have been told things by the geniuses that were simply incorrect. Recently, at the North Park store in Dallas, Texas, a group of three, including the senior local expert, conferred together and agreed upon answering my question about Airport Time Capsule with something that was absolutely wrong. I suspected they were wrong, so I checked into it further before acting on their "facts." Good that I did, for I saved myself a lot of money and headaches.
If a genius tells you that the problem is with your iPad 2, and that nothing is wrong with IOS 8.x, he is not getting that from knowledgeable Apple techs. He is only making that assumption, based upon his amazing experience. I can assure you that Apple is not sending that message down the pipe to the local store geniuses. And the last thing any genius is going to easily volunteer is "I really don't know anything about this."
Grrr. No Service returned today (that would be 3 full days of it working right). Went to iCloud settings for a few seconds, and it searched and found service again (which it didn't do before I turned the sliders off). We'll see how long it lasts this time. I also pinged a higher up systems engineer at Apple and pointed him to this thread, just in case.
Just curious, not overly computer literate here, just frustrated seeing over 16,000 complaints and nothing from Apple. How do you reach a systems engineer, and does anyone from Apple respond?
while we might like to idealistically think that someone at apple cares about this problem, i don't they anyone is working on it or if you'll pardon my expression, gives a "rat's ***". i have taken my iPad into the genius bar twice and had an informal discussion with one of their associates. The genius bar people seemed oblivious to the problem but did a reset and wiped the whole thing....but said if that didn't work it was probably a hardware problem. I don't believe it's a hardware problem. in the informal discussion the associate, who also has an iPad and is having the same problem, and he says it's the processing system that can't keep up with the iOS 8. not sure if i understand. so today i was in the apple store and talking with another person who says it's hardware. but they act like they don't know thousands of people are having this problem. So i really think they don't care because it's small compared to their whole picture and they are going to force us to get a new iPad.
now is there not anyone on this discussion board that knows how to back us down to 7 like we were before we got messed up????
Bellesou, sorry, but you can no longer return to IOS 7. The earlier posts about people doing this were made before Apple cut that route off.
Iit's really too bad that 17,000 complaints on just one device doesn't get Apple's attention. They must all be busy getting ready for the next launch. I sure hope the new iPhone had better quality control. In the future this has taught me to wait until the bitter end before installing new software on an "old" device.
Budwig, just tried your icloud method and it worked. I could see it searching and the service returned. Definitely better than restarting. Let's see how long it works.
I follow a pile of Apple blogs and they routinely mention problems with other devices that had problems with the various IOS 8 updates and connectivity, yet I haven't seen a single article about this item. I'm baffled that the "news" people aren't mentioning this. Surely there are more iPad 2's out there than iPhone 6's, but it's like this problem is invisible.
So we have to enable iCloud in order to restore cellular service without a reboot? I'm not sure I'm inclined to do that!
Maybe this is their second inducement for us to enable iCloud as the U2 "giveaway" didn't get much traction!
