I guess if your new phone starts heating up, it might seem like more of an issue. I think people are logging these issues so that it's possible to gauge the scale of the problem - and you can be sure that there are lot of people with the same problem who simply haven't found this particular thread. Hopefully a clear picture will emerge at some point and we'll either find a solution or Apple will provide one.

It seems like going into settings and just disabling anything to do with automatic updates and background refreshes has worked for me. The battery is still pretty poor, but as has already been said, I haven't done a full charge/discharge yet. This does however seem to have fixed the overheating issue.

The two things I did were: Settings > iTunes and App Store > Turn off everything under automatic downloads

Settings > General > Background App Refresh > All off

We shouldn't have to do this on new phones, but it does seem to have worked, at least until Apple starts on an official fix.

I'm currently setting up two iPhone 6 64gb phones and they are not hot at all. Not even warm and as they download apps from the cloud, I'm adding passwords, etc and neither is any warmer as the iPhone 5's these are replacing.

Wait for it. Mine stayed pretty cool until I started re-entering my email passwords and downloading email. I also noticed a bunch of my apps were not downloaded from my icloud backup, so I had to plug the phone into my laptop and pull them from iTunes there. Its been getting warm ever since.

Nope.....I've already downloaded all email, entered all passwords and now all apps are fully downloaded. I've been on YouTube and played a video, texted, done what I'd normally do on my phone and it's simply not hot or even warm. This is two phones.

Honestly, this happens with every single iPhone release and iOS upgrade. I have no idea what some people have running on their devices that causes heat, but I've never experienced heat on any device I've had. And these two new iPhone 6 64gb phones are no different. They're running cool, literally and figuratively.

I really really like the new phone!

This is interesting. I got my phone at 10:30am. Used it on and off for hours with no noticeable heat problems (for a large percentage of that time, it was plugged into my laptop charging). Around 7:45pm, I turned on auto-download of songs, apps and books in the Settings app. Around that time noticed it getting really hot and within an hour, the battery was dead. The only thing I was doing during this time was sending periodic imessages.

I just woke up from having charged it all night. It's nice and cool. I'm going to keep auto-download settings on to see if it heats up again. If it does, I'll try turning the settings off and see if it persists.

I reckon this happens with the initial setup.

Found this post from Reddit: "Keep in mind that when you get a new phone you are running a lot of stuff in the background, indexing spotlight download all of your stuff from the cloud, apps installing... Once you get it all up and running after a few hours, it's back to normal. This "issue" freaks everyone out every year when the phone launches"

I checked out those display models at the apple store and they were not even warm. It's true that they didn't do nothing but the displays were on all the time.

ALso I haven't read about heat issue on any reviews. However, Engadget did mention that the iphone 6 gets quite warm.

My 6+ arrives monday. Will update later!

I'm genuinely glad you don't think it's a big problem. However, I've now had the phone for 36 hours; I've turned off auto updates and I've reset the phone - and although it's not as bad as yesterday, the phone still gets uncomfortably warm whenever it has to do a little work like downloading a few apps or music. Just bad luck I guess but if this isn't a fixable issue, then I'll be looking for a replacement or a refund. Hope you have better luck.

I Wasn't making light of this. But EVERY new phone or iOS release has produced similar threads. There are so many variables from different apps to the way people use their devices.

I'm typing this from my iPhone 6, while Pandora is streaming music, with loads of apps in the background and my phone isn't even slightly warm. If you feel your phone isn't working properly, return it for a replacement.

IIt happened to my iPhone 6 4.7 too. It was so hot it felt uncomfortable to touch it. Turns out it needed to update the carrier settings. For some reason it couldn't update on the phone itself, (my theory is that it tried fruitlessly to do so in the background , hence the heat) so I had to do a full restore via iTunes. The pop up came up with the carrier settings message (do not remember the exact wording), and BOOM, excessive heat was gone. You could try going into settings, general, about. If there's a carrier update it should ask you to install it right there, or it could fail, like in my case. Hope this helps!
