This should become a sticky. So many people immediately assume their new phone is defective, when it's usually something like what you discovered. Phones pretty much only get warm or hot when they are being taxed somehow. In your case you did some extra investigating and low and behold, you discovered your phone was constantly trying to update something. Imagine that. Once your phone was no longer needing to constantly try to update something, your phone cooled down and is now operating normally.

For example, I suspect people discover their phone is warm during the setup process, even with iCloud restore and even after all the apps have downloaded. What they don't see is that the device is still communicating with Apple servers and backing up the new phone, which in some cases can go on for hours.

HI,

;just to add my two cence. I have a 64GB iPhone 5s running IOS 8 and I just noticed that it is running rather hot. All I am doing is lisening to an Audio Podcast.

Battery drain might be slightly higher than normal but hard to tell at the moment with out further testing. But definently really hot. Not so hot that I can't hold my phone but hot enought that I could use it as a hand warmer. And much hoter than it used to get.

One other thing to keep an eye on. Not sure if it's related to heat, or to IOS 8, or the phone itself, but I notice the screen randomly dimming slightly. I have auto brightness off, as I like my screen on 100% at all times. So it's easy to notice any dimming, and I notice this once in a while. Then in a few minutes or longer it just pops back to full brightness. All times stating it's at 100%. I know on my LG G3 when the phone gets hot, the brightness drops down on it's own regardless if you have auto brightness on or not to protect the hardware. Anyone else notice random dimming of the screen on 100% when it's not intended (auto brightness off)?

It sounds the same as mine but I'm sending it back today and will wait a while before considering a new one. I'm grateful to you for starting this thread and to those who have shared their thoughts. Although I have some sympathy with those who are bored of such issues, I really can't see the point of a 'Support Community' if not to exchange experiences of problems as they arise. I can't imagine why some people have felt compelled to show off that their phones are working properly. Clearly with any new launch there's an element of chance involved and having one that works is not an achievement and it should come as no surprise. Hopefully iOS 8.1 or some other solution will come through soon and I wish you the very best.

Because it's nice to see some balance, even in a thread where it's clear some people are experiencing an issue. It might give someone hope that NOT ALL iPhone 6's have a problem.

I'm not sure how much 'hope' most people will need to rely on provided they've kept their receipt. I suspect for many people with new iPhones this will be a matter of nuisance rather than some kind of life-threatening dilemma - the nuisance of replacing your phone versus the nuisance of getting the one you have to work without overheating. It's fair to assume that the majority of new iPhones function properly otherwise this issue would be on the six o'clock news rather than a Support Community thread, although I'm sure the Apple PR department probably appreciate your input more than those experiencing difficulty. Perhaps instead you might visit your nearest hospital to parade your good health in the interests of balance.
