I seem to have the same issue as everyone else. My genuine Apple HDMI adapter was working before the IOS 8 update but doesn't work now. I turned off and then on my iPad2 and started the movie I want to watch on my TV before connecting the HDMI cable. The movie played on the TV for a few seconds before I got a new message stating 'this TV is not authorised to play this movie'. ***?! My partner still has iOS 7 on his iPad so he downloaded the same movie and tried playing it, only to get the same message. So it's not purely an iOS issue. We have come to the conclusion that it's because the movie we both downloaded from iTunes was downloaded as a rental. has anyone else had this problem? Do you know whether this problem occurs with movies purchased from iTunes (as opposed to rented from iTunes)?

Are Apple now protecting their movies so people can only watch them through the device they downloadde the movie on to?

My aggravation in this process is that my Apple HDMI adapter was working fine on IOS7 then STOPPED working when I upgraded to IOS8 because it was "not supported." Well, if it was supported by IOS7 why did it suddenly become not supported by IOS8 except that Apple wants me to buy their "new and improved" version and line their pockets with more cash.

I was lucky and managed to download an IOS7 install file from a third party site within a day or two of the IOS8 release. I used it to downgrade to IOS7. I don't know if there are any of those sites still available and I can't find what happened to that file on my desktop. It was a hassle. I had to reset the pad to factory new, install the new (old) IOS and since when I installed 8, iTunes synced my pad to that IOS, it would not "restore" to IOS7. I had to manually reinstall all my apps, files, songs, etc. as if I had acquired a new pad. Was not a fun two days, but it's working like its old self.

I agree, Apple doesn't seem to care that they removed a valuable feature from their ipads/iPhones since I have seen no acknolegement from them anywhere regarding the issue. All u can think of it's something they want to charge up for.

And as of today I was excited to see if they had fixed this problem with ios8.1.1 and what a surprise it still hasn't been fixed. This is a joke. Hoping this helps everyone here....

I spent a full day researching everything I could, burning Google up.

Mine is now fixed and I can watch the NBC CBS ABC apps again and not have to fight the stutter and delay those apps have with AirPlay-mirror.

I still use Airplay with apps that support it without having to use the mirror function, so I can be wireless sometimes.

Back to the cable fix:

Here is what I found.

-----------------------------

There are "firmware" chips in the A/V cables. Both the generic and the official Apple cables. Older cables, again both generic and Apple worked with iOS lower than 8.0.

However,,, when Apple rolled out iOS 8.xx, the new iOS no longer was compatible with the firmware in the older cables... Regardless whether they are genetic or Apple. That is why we have seen mixed reports of which cables work, and which do not.

IF you were fortunate enough to purchase a cable, generic or Apple with the newer firmware, then your cable works with iOS 8.x.

IF you were unfortunate (like me) your older cable quit working after you upgraded to ios 8.x.

When your older cable stopped working, you likely got error 3194, "this device is not supported...etc"

Here is the fix

-------------------

IF you buy a new cable, generic or Apple,, BE SURE to it has the new firmware chipsets that are compatible with iOS 8.x

I purchased a new cable at the Apple Store tonight. I told the guy that I wanted a GUARANTEE that the cable would work with the new iOS. He assured me it would. So, I brought the Apple adapter (part# MD098ZM/A) home. I connected it to my iPad-2, then used my old BestBuy HDMI cable and attached to HDMI port on my TV. SUCCESS!!!!!

SO,,, my guess is that if you buy a generic cable with the new firmware that it will work. Likewise, if you buy the official Apple cable with new firmware, that it will work.

Conclusion, this is an incompatibility problem between the firmware in the cable and the new iOS. This is true regardless of generic or Apple cable.

Will Apple apply a fix to make older cables work?? Perhaps, but unlikely. They make money selling new adapters and forcing generic manufacturers pay license fees to use the new firmware.

SO, bite the bullet and get yourself a cable with the new firmware. For me, it is worth the $30, as I have long ago cut the cord to the cable company!

Good luck to you all, and I hope this is helpful to you.

Since I've upgraged to 8.1.1, I can't use my generic cables to connect my Ipad 3 to my TV (HDMI).

Those cables were working fine when I was using your IOS 7.

I feel Apple wants everyone to buy their own house made cables!

That is not right... Why now?

I own an hotel in the Caribbean (Marigot Bay, St. Lucia) and I was on the verge of buying Ipads to put in my bedrooms for my guests to use.

Not anymore! Unless Apple come with a fix for this problem, I guess I'll have to turn to Windows or Android products.

I guess I'm not the only one who will look away...

Quite a bad marketing decision from Apple! ;-(

Hopefully, Apple will reconsider and comes with a fix... if they do care about their million of users who, like me, can not use their "perfectly fine" cables.

But do they really care? Time will tell...

64Smack, your reply was the most insightful response in the entire thread. I think I understand the issue now, and I will do what I can to get a cable with newer firmware. I probably cannot find the receipt, so I can forget all about getting a refund or an upgrade.

The vexing issue here is that apple has been completely silent about it. In this, and in other threads, we learn how many, many users have complained to Aplle, and have been told to switch on and off, upgrade, etc, and sometimes the poor supporter gives up and refers to his second level supporter, after which we never hear more. I cannot believe that Apple as a company is unaware of this issue, not after all the error reports, but it is evident that the supporters are as much in the dark as we are.

Presumably, someone at Apple has decided that admitting it to be an issue would result in a huge cost in replacing the obsolete adapters.
