iPad 2, iOS 8
I experienced the same problem after updating to IOS 8 this morning on my iPad 2. I tried a hard reset (press and hold both buttons) and it resolved the problem. 3G restored. I hope the same may work for you and others who may experience this glitch.
I've been shutting down and starting up again... Works for a while... However anyone else noticed when starting up on 32 GB iPad 2 with this issue that the iPad seems to boot twice, I.e. Gets to the lock screen, crashes and starts a second time?
BTW - also think this may be related to searching and connecting to certain WiFi networks... Found that home WiFi connection doesn't affect things but when I get to work the Mobile signal dies... I'm having much more success with the mobile connection staying up when the WiFi is turned off!??!
My 3G cell data service stopped working immediately after installing iOS 8. Wifi works ok. I performed a hard reset ( press power button down and hold) and now the 3G service is back and alive. Thanks to all who suggested this solution here.
Thanks michaelfromhurricane, my 3G on my iPad 2 is now back working and alive after doing a hard reset as suggested.
JJust an update. My fix above is still working!
and since I have set cellular service there is a lot less lag in keyboard and multitasking gestures are working better
aawake asleep probably 15 times now and no lost service
looking good.
( usingTelstra 3G Australia)
How did you do that? Thank you for your help.
Is there a contact or number that one can call to lodge a complaint so the engineers can see what a problem this is? I use my iPad for work and out in the field where there is no Wi-Fi. My 64 gig iPad 2 has been rendered useless.
What can I Do? Thank you for any help.
How does one do a hard reset? Do I have to back up my iPad (connect to my MacBook Air) first? Thank you for the help and advice.
Last 4 days of my life with iPad 2 & 3G:
Turn on on/off: Worked for an hour or two
iTunes sync: Worked for 3 or 4 hours
Hard reset: Worked for 20 minutes!
So I gave up, then I noticed yesterday that 3 g had come back, all by itself! Horah!! Lasted 24 hours......took my ipad out for a meeting today and it was gone again....
Incredibly frustrating...

lightnessandweight I agree that is my life as well. Very unfortunate for a company that had developed such a reputation. Kinda appears that they are heading the same direction they went when they got rid of Steve Jobs the first time-the difference is that they can't get him back this time. Apple where are you?
Add me to the list of ipad 2 users with this problem. A hard reset fixes it for a while, but I lose service if the ipad sleeps. In addition to not having service, it is draining the battery. This is a mjor issue, I hope Apple fixes this soon.
Thiis worked for me too.
ipad2 connected on Optus in Australia.
Since upgrade to ios8 the 3G drops out randomly after a few hours and usually doesnt come back Without a hard reset.
I have seen it return spontaneously twice. No pattern that I can see.
"find my iphone" seems to work. Just open the app.
thanks!
Thanks for this, it fixed my problem as well.
Could you please be so kind to tell us all what exactly solved your problem? Thanks for your help.
I was thinking the same thing -- 1996 here we come!
For the people who had got it working (and also still broken), could you also post your service provider? I'm using verizon, and none of these suggestions are working. I'm constantly stuck on "searching..."
