iPhone 6: Apparent backlight uniformity issue

My new Verizon iPhone 6 64GB exhibits a darker region on the top 1/8th of the display. It is most evident when displaying a white background. It is difficult to tell whether it's a chromaticity issue (AMLCD issue), a luminance uniformity problem (backlight), or something else all together.

Anyone else notice this effect on their new phone?

I have a dark area on left 1/4 of my phone. Stays dark and just happened out of no where. Had 6 for about a month now. I took to Apple Store and after about a hour of the rep and a asst manager I was told since I didn't buy the added insurance I would have to pay for a FULL **** PHONE to get fixed. The store in Stonebriar Mall in Allen Texas. DO NOT GO THERE. They were no help and basically told me to bad so sad unless I wanted to pay for a new or refurbished 6. *** and it is only 1 month old and APPLE won't stand behind their product. THIS IS THE LAST APPLE PRODUCT I BUY.....

Hi All ,

I am living at qatar and i was using the iphone 5s before , haven't faced the issue until i decided to get the iphone 6 , i noticed the issue once i started to use my device , it is a nerve breaking issue as i started to look at this area once i unlock the screen .

then i traveled to United Arab emirates and decided to find a solution as i was very angry from the issue and not happy with the daily using , so i went to a branch related to the supplier , and i tested there 5 devices , and guess what ! all have the same issue ,even worth .

the supplier started to tell me that we are selling too much and no one is complaining and this the first device and all this stuff .

i asked him to send the device for the service center and today i should get an answer for that .. hope to find an appropriate solution .,

Either send the phone back for refund if you are within the specified time or try a different store. If not then I'm afraid there is not much you can do about it, if its not affecting your ability to use the phone there is not much to be done. Also if you see more handsets with that issue then you probably wont get a perfect one, stick with what you have or sell it of you are past the 14 days.

Is everyone here reporting the issues they are seeing to Apple Support? I ask because I am seeing this as well, and the Support person I spoke with said he hadn't heard about this issue (which of course could just be the company line).

What I'm seeing is that the top 1/4 inch or so of my iPhone 6's screen (near the receiver) looks as if it has a slight shadow-like discoloration that does not appear on the rest of the screen. It is difficult to see the discoloration unless that part of the screen is completely white, but, when it is, that area looks a bit darker and yellowed, similar to how a weathered piece of paper might look. It's most noticeable when the ambient light is low, but is just as noticeable regardless of screen brightness. It's also more apparent when the screen is in landscape mode, likely because that area is then most likely white and my eyes keep returning to it as I read.

I'm not sure what to do about this issue. I'm thinking a good next step could be to take it in and have someone at the Genius Bar just take a look to see what they think, but even though this issue is painfully obvious to me, I couldn't get my girlfriend to see it regardless of how hard I tried. So, I'm not confident I will even get them to see it. I'm also not too crazy about going through the whole rigmarole of exchanging phones if they are likely to have the same problem (and possibly be worse), and I'm also not too crazy about potentially getting a refurb, as even though I'm past 14 days the phone isn't even a month old.

I have a feeling I might end up just living with it, which kind of ***** because I otherwise really like this phone (my first iPhone) and the screens of my last two phones - Nokias - were perfect.

I bought 3 iPhones6 16gb on Friday, 2 had the same or similar issue to what you described and the 3rd has a smaller less pronounced shadow.

I returned 2 later that day and one of the new iPhones had the same issue.

I went back today and asked to see the new phone before i'd accept it. I accepted the 2nd iPhone they brought out even though it wasn't perfect

Has everyone seen this from earlier this Fall:

Reuters: iPhone 6 backlight woes affect production plans, could limit launch availability

It appears the backlight in the iPhone 6 is a new design, due to the thinness of the phone. But, there was a rush to redesign the backlight right before launch, because "the new backlight reportedly was not bright enough." Are we all seeing these issues because of a rushed redesign? Did the redesign not fully resolve the low brightness? Without knowing more, it does seem that the issues we're seeing could be related to the brightness, given that these darker areas are only really visible when the screen is white.

Holy smokes! Add me to the list! I got my space gray iPhone 6 the other day and all was great till I was scrolling though some web pages and I noticed some of the text seems to get darker at a certain part of the screen. So I cranked up the brightness and loaded up a blank white page and sure enough there are two darkish faded blobs on the upper half of the screen. It's been driving me nuts and then I found this thread and some others! Now I don't know what to do! If I return my phone will I just get one that's worse?? I hope Apple will do something about this! My iPhone 5 display was perfect! I notice the imperfections on this one everytime I use it! Should I call up att and get a replacement?

I ended up taking mine in to an Apple Store; the Genius I worked with saw the issue right away and replaced the screen under warranty (which I was told included the backlight as well). Thing is, the issue is there on the new screen as well, albeit not as bad as the original. I then compared my new screen to a handful of iPhone 6's on display, and every display phone I looked at had the issue as well, and as my replacement wasn't as bad as them, I decided to head home and see what I think of it over time and whether it gets worse (which I think could be a possibility, given that I didn't notice the issue when I first got the phone, but it was painfully obvious after a few weeks).

I purchased another iPhone 6 and one iPhone 6+ for my wife and daughter. The iPhone 6 (gold) still got uniformity issue at the top region, but the iPhone 6+ (space grey) got the perfect screen.

I'm quite disappointed that Apple did not acknowledge this issue, and keep using the same LCD display two months after the pop-up of LCD uniformity issues. Is there something wrong with the quality control/assurance? We pay the premium for the highest quality standard, but if Apple is going to ignore the QC/QA issue, I can foresee that it will be heading downhill within a couple of years.
