iPhone 6: Apparent backlight uniformity issue

My new Verizon iPhone 6 64GB exhibits a darker region on the top 1/8th of the display. It is most evident when displaying a white background. It is difficult to tell whether it's a chromaticity issue (AMLCD issue), a luminance uniformity problem (backlight), or something else all together.

Anyone else notice this effect on their new phone?

yea I wasn't completely satisfied with their answer so I called apple care over the phone. The lady that helped me was great and said that I would be able to confirm whether it's a software issue by performing a restore (not from backup). If after the restore the problem is still there, it's a hardware issue.

why on earth wouldn't the genius tell me to do that? After a restore, the problem is still there. Called apple care back, they apologized for the experience at the apple store and are sending me an "express replacement" device that'll be at my door in two business days. Once I get it I am to put my current phone in the box and send it back. Easy as pie.

apple care also declined that it's a known iOS8 issue resulting in the screen problem so maybe the genius at the store was having a bad day or didn't want to deal with me. apple care over the phone was very helpful and quick. I'll report back once I have a new phone to see if it also has the same issue.

Space gray iPhone 6 128gb. On my 4th phone. Latest has yellowing on the bottom half of the display but not as noticeable as the others (my post on the previous page details the issues with each replacement). I'll give it another few weeks and make a decision if it doesn't go away. I try not to look for it but it ***** to start reading an article and feel like I need to turn up my brightness every time I get to the bottom of the screen.

Same problem.

Main is iPhone 6 Silver 64GB serial begins with C38 (UK).

Already replaced once. Better but still same noticeable issue which i found to be distracting each time viewing webpages.

Will give a shoot for second replacement today. Will see. Hopefully will find perfect one.

If not, then I already reconciled with the fact that I will go back to my old iPhone 5S with perfect backlight.

I have the same problem :-/ Question: if you ask for a replacement, how long does is take until you get the new device? and can you keep the (defective) iPhone until the new one arrives? I would not have a Smartphone to use in the meantime...

And one more question: did you call Apple or did you write an E-mail to ask for a replacement?

Thanks in advance!

Finally I have decided to return my iPhone. 3rd one had very same problem. I also found that all of them haevery same issues. Those which seemed to be better simply had this issue on both sides instead of one. So it looked better in vertical But was again noticeable in horizontal view. I also noticed that 6 plus are better but it is too big for me.

SO now I came back to my 5s with perfect backlight- sadly.

Mine (Serial Number begins with C39, Hong Kong) was having the same issue.

I took it to the genius bar and they replace it with another unit ( also C39... ). The replacement unit looks a bit better, though still not perfectly uniform in terms of brightness, I guess I'll just live with it for the time being.

Done 3 replacements in UK first two started with C39 and third one C37 all suffer from same issue. Very annoying once you notice that there is a problem. :( still in dilemma whether to keep it or return within 14days refund policy. What is annoying is first two were brought from Apple store and genius guys aren't acknowledging the problem. They just say they can't see any problem with the display. Third one was bought from online store so I don't have to deal with store dudes trying to convince them

This looks like this is becoming a major problem. I bought a white ATT iPhone6, 16gb, and the upper right corner was darker than the rest of the screen – BIG TIME, like a darker cloud. I was shocked, thinking certainly this was just bad luck; I took it back and swapped it out. The Genius Bar fellow noticed it right away and so there was no convincing needed. It was obvious. Serial F78.

My problem with the replacement (another F78 serial) is the same as Billyaxex2’s problem. At the top of the screen at either side of the time it is darker, while the time display area is brighter, like a hot-spot. It’s not as extreme as the first one, but it’s still noticeable. The lower your set the lighting on the phone in the settings, the worse the anomaly stands out.

I went to the Apple store (Houston) and spent 40 minutes looking at eight different iPhone 6 models (both black and white models). Of the ones I inspected, all three of the regular iPhone6 models in white had shadowing uniformity issues across the top. I looked at three iPhone6 black models and two of them had the same issue with slight darkening splotches. I only saw one perfect screen out of six regular iPhone6 models (and it was a black / space grey model). I looked at two iphone6 Plus models as well (in white), and no shadowing at all was visible, but there was a slight yellow tinge towards the bottom of one of them.

Go to Safari app, load a blank webpage, and take a screenshot. Then go to your photos app and zoom in on the white space until is completely fills the screen, and tap it once to make the status bar disappear. Now with the entire screen showing white, set your screen power to about half and look across the top. I did this for all the ones I looked at. If there’s a problem you will notice it, and once you do, it is nerve racking.

Bottom line – it’s sadly luck of the draw. I inspected eight regular iPhone sixes and have now owned two of them. Only one of these (a display model) did not have issues with the screen dark / light spots uniformity at the top, so it looks like the odds are some variation in these displays can be expected. This is really disappointing.
