iPhone 6: Apparent backlight uniformity issue

My new Verizon iPhone 6 64GB exhibits a darker region on the top 1/8th of the display. It is most evident when displaying a white background. It is difficult to tell whether it's a chromaticity issue (AMLCD issue), a luminance uniformity problem (backlight), or something else all together.

Anyone else notice this effect on their new phone?

HI there.

I am on my third iphone 6. 1st had a bright spot near left central of the screen that worsened with heat.

SEcond had had the above problem had dark line across the top.

This one has dark line at top and darker patch on top right corner. Although over today I have noticed the darkness is slowly getting better. Thinking it may be glue. Anyway I don't want to swap it out again, so sticking with this one. Have seriously considered going to Samsung though with lovely AMOLED screens. Even considered swapping my iPad for the tab s. Mmmm

Okay, so I received my replacement today. When I first turned it on there was a blue-green tinge to the left-top of the screen. It was slight, but there. As I have been using it messing with the brightness comparing between phones, the tinge has subsided some. My original phone's display didn't look great right out of the box either but has improved moderately. I don't know why this is, but my advice for anyone wanting to compare is to use it a few days. You can't compare right out of the box, because the uniformity and color accuracy seem to change from when they are first turned on.

I'm going to use the replacement a few days and see how I feel. I think the whites are whiter with the replacement than the original and whatever defects it has may be less noticeable. The replacement is also definitely somewhat brighter. Wife confirmed this. I'll report back in a few days.

For my really expensive retina macbook pro15" I went through many many replacement to get a perfect screen, which I now have. However, I don't think I'm going to do that with the iPhone. Too much stress. In the future, I'm always going to order multiple of whatever product I am buying from apple, choose the best screen, and then return the rest. That would be easier than this hassle of getting replacements.

So after performing all sorts of usability tests. I've determined the first one is actually better over all. It's worse in one area, but overall the screen is more uniform. In landscape mode the replacement definitely has a noticeable color gradient.

I guess there aren't many perfect iphones 6th's out there. Cost cutting and rushed manufacturing or some combination has had a negative impact on these screens. I imagine if I went through enough of them I'd find one with a perfect screen, but It's not worth it. I'd probably have to do 5 returns or more.

Sorry to hear that penrobe, I casually visited the store this afternoon here in UK, And all display units especially 6+ also had this gradient problem ( warm to cool ) and it is very noticeable in landscape mode as you said in white screens like Messages, email etc. I think every device out there are like that and unfortunately there is no definite solution but trying to swap and hope that it would be fine. I would suggest you to do what I am doing, just stick with it for 7-8 months down the line and then go for a replacement and hope that this annoying issue would be resolved

My first phone I got on launch day was from Bristol. It had gradient problem bottom half yellow top half more bluish. I then returned it in Bath Spa store for a replacement device. That had same issue but additionally at the center of the screen there was a bright spot. Returned that for full refund and then I ordered one from apple store. When I recieved it as others mentioned when I first opened it, there was no non uniform gradient or brightness problem. But after couple of days I started noticing that top half had warmer tint and bottom right had cooler tint. I'm currently struck in a dilemma whether to keep it or return it 😟

I wish there was a perfectionist option when buying Apple products where you paid a little more but were guaranteed a perfect phone the first time.

WIth my rMBP I yelled at them and got them to agree to check the screen. I did get a perfect screen that time. You could try doing that, but I found it very stressful.

Just got back from the MK Apple Store. Got a refund for my iPhone. Got there early and looked at about half a dozen silver and gold phones. All had the same problem as mine to some degree or other. Looked at a couple of black ones; these were perfect.

The genius I saw bought out 2 silver replacement phones. Both had the problem, one worse than the other, so I decided to get a refund and have a think about what to do. The genius confirmed that he could see the problem with all three phones.

It is definitely a quality control issue with the silver and gold phones. They seem to be the most popular colours and the ones more commonly out of stock. There must be a rush to make them and that could be the reason they exhibit the problem and the black ones don’t.
