iphone 6 plus rotation problem

I am having problems with my new iPhone 6 plus. The phones screen sometimes does not rotate when I rotate in landscape mode, and sometimes it does. It seems like a software bug, and I hope its not a hardware problem. Also sometimes the icons rotate 180 degrees [it flips] and its stuck like that for a while. The odd thing is Safari does not rotate with it. So when I open a webpage the page bottom is near the thumb sensor, but the icons are upside down. Which makes me think it most likely is a software problem, but not sure.

Anyone experiencing this problem, any solutions yet?

Yesterday I started having problems again... (originally started about a week ago, then I calibrated the Compass app, and it started to rotate normally).

So I went to the Compass app again, and it indeed needed calibration once again!

To me it looks like it does lose calibration for some reason. And while calibrating will help, unfortunately it won't last long

Apple, please fix this!

On my THIRD iPhone 6+ now and same issue. Odds of hardware issues are really low at this point and I wish to believe its a software issue in all 6+s.

Some people(like myself) are savvy and use phone all day long, that too aggressively. Others less and don't care much about these issues.

Looks like the best approach should be to keep reaching out to apple and open cases so that its on their high priority bug fixes for next release.

The Home screen on my iPhone 6 Plus rotates on the y-axis so that you can have the Home/Touch ID button on top, and the layout is normal. I am not sure if this is a bug or as designed, but it is quite annoying because the screen will rotate at the slightest angle. Also, why won't they let us lock landscape like on iPad? I have wanted that since iPhone OS 1.0.

Hi. I am having the exact same rotation/orientation issue on my iPhone 6.

Sometimes the orientation change is not working - independently of the app (Safari, Camera, Photos, etc.).

What I have tried so far (nothing fixed the issue permanently):

  • restarting device
  • compass calibration
  • factory reset through iTunes and reinstalled the latest version of iOS

Does anybody know whether this is a HARDWARE or SOFTWARE issue?

If software, I am happy to keep my phone and wait for an update to fix it. If it is an hardware issue I would want to return the device and get another one.

Thanks, Nikolai

I have exactly the same issue!

I always tilt my phone to the left, so that when in landscape I have the home button to the right. Problem is apps and games starts "UPSIDE DOWN". Exactly the opposite from how Im holdin. I then have to rotate the phone back to standing and then laying it down again to get the screen correct.

This feels like a software issue, its like the software is missing to check in what direction the phone is, if its tilted to the left or right... feels like the software only check if its tilted or not and then starts the app always in tilted to the right, which becomes upside down...

I am having the same issue on my 6 (not plus). It will randomly work and then stop. I have calibrated the compass and that did not fix it for long. I have also tried switching from standard mode to zoom mode and back again. Seemed to work for now. Currently speaking with support to see if there is anything else to be done. Will update if any new info comes out

I contacted Apple Support and they recommended "Reset All Settings" (careful NOT to "Erase All Content and Settings"). This seemed to fix it for now but since it is sporadic in nature, I will have to monitor it to make sure. The downside is I have to reconfigure all my ringtones and settings, but a small price to pay if this works. Will check back in a few days and let you all know if it worked permanently.

i have the same problem with rotation-lock on iPhone 6 plus.

  • iOS 8.0.2 (12A405) v17.0 - so newest update still has the problem.
  • was Zoomed, changed to Standard and that worked for a few days - Standard still has the problem.
  • i tried the compass re-calibration. - i am skeptical really. i have to wonder if entering and exiting any other app, then relaunching the problem app would have the same affect? (as compass re-calibration) just saying. should rotation again lock, i will try the placebo effect theory. will follow-up on this 'calibration' test later...

we have one user in this thread who is on 6+ #3. the chance of getting bad hardware three times in a row is actually pretty darn low.

therefore i'm with the "SOFTWARE BUG" camp. i will lobby for Apple to addresses this issue in the next OS update by filing a bug. i suggest you do to! (everyone)

follow-up to last post:

  • compass re-calibration is only temporary, problem returns rather soon (less than 1 day, maybe even in hours)
  • bug filed
  • i wonder if it's a stuck sensor, but logic is still telling me that this is software - Setting Reset and Compass-trick both are software related, and maybe some process related to getting orientation data is failing or crashed
