iOS 8 iBooks Highlighting Everything

I'm running iBooks on my iPhone 5S on iOS 8. When I highlight blocks of text, starting at the top of the text and move down, it highlights the block as normal.

But - if I start at the top of the block and highlight to the bottom right or left of the screen - the ENTIRE text of the book before the highlight gets highlighted.

Very frustrating - I have spent a considerable amount of time highlighting my books and my highlights are getting completely ruined by this. I never had this problem in iOS 7 and I always read in portrait orientation.

I've used iBooks for years to highlight personal documents and writing. This is a new development and completely unwelcome. Add me to the list of ****** off people who just had all their notes merged into one giant note.

Are there any suggestions for another app that takes notes as well as iBooks does? I mean, DID. Thanks.

Same to me. Hours of work are gone with the wind. And iCloud has been synchronizing the desaster all over my iOS devices within seconds. An undo function would have saved me. But there is none. I have lots of backups. But I can't find any description how to restore only iBooks' highlights, notes, and bookmarks. When the iOS device is organizing your complete life yout can't make a complete restore without loosing other important data and settings. WITH THIS BUG APPLE IS LOOSING A LOT OF IT'S REPUTATION. Thank you, Apple.

I am experiencing the same issue on an iPad Air 2, and OS 8.1.1. When I highlight a small area, the entire previous section of the book is also completely highlighted. When I clicked on trash, from the fly-out menu, I lost all of my previous 150 pages of highlighted text (so frustrating)! I called Apple ibooks Support on 11-22-14, and they were no help. The only advice provided was to restore my iPad to a previous back-up. This does not solve the problem. The support technician indicated that Apple is aware of this bug, and working on a fix. I asked why not just add an "undo" command to the fly-out menu? This would temporarily solve the problem until Apple can find a fix.

I Am having this problem with the highlighting as well as a problem with iCloud not syncin. Apple has worked on the syncing problem for over a month with me and no solution yet. I expect the same with the highlighting issue. I will submit the issue of highlighting to Apple. Maybe getting rid of IOS 8 might help the whole problem.. So far IOS 8 is a mess.

My wife was having the same problem. And found out when she is highlighting in IBook's if she holds her finger down passed the last paragraph. Either to the lower left or lower right. It highlights the whole previse paragraph's back to the beginning of the article. But if you notice if you never let up you finger you will see it highlight all the previse paragraph's. It looks like you have to have more of control when highlighting. But I do agree with everyone that this hadn't started until the new IOS 8 update. Because before you didn't have to make sure you were not out side the paragraph when highlighting. I hope this helps somebody.

I understand everyone's frustration. I will throw in, however, that my wife came upon this problem over a year ago on her original ipad mini running ios6.?.? The issue presented itself when she got to the the final paragraph in an epub article and highlited past the last line in the article. She lifted her finger while everything was highlighted. When she deleted the highlight she lost all her notes and annotation just as many of you have. Unhappy wife......(you know the rhyme). At first i had no answers as I tried unsuccessfully to reproduce the issue and was ready to blame her for touching something she should not have. Well it eventually happend to me on my 3rd gen iPad running ios7.?.? Needless to say I had to eat a lot of crow and explain to my wife what the problem was. Since then we have both been very careful with our highlighting and have warned many of our friends and family not to drag your finger into the margin or to the bottom of the page while highlighting and if you happen to do so DO NOT lift your finger while everything is highlighted or you'll be sorry. So what can you do? Basically I will reiterate what others here have already suggested. Highlight very carefully and only lift your finger/stylus from the page once you are sure the appropriate text is highlted, and if you notice you have gone too far with your highlighting, ALL IS NOT LOST YET, just back up to where you meant to stop, THEN LIFT YOUR FINGER, and you should be fine. This is not the ultimate answer and just like everyone here I hope this is something that Apple fixes SOON, but it has saved us a lot of frustration and prevented a lot of lost notes in the meantime. Happy highlighting!

FYI IOS 8.1.2 does not fix the issue

This issue has appeared on iOS 8.0 first. On iOS 6 and 7 dragging the selection out of the margin page would have extended the selection over the first word on the next page. Either the page was on the same chapter/section of the book/document or on the next one.

It never happened that it would have done a "backward selection" as it is doing now.

There was no need of "carefully" highlight text as if it was some sort of surgery operation.

It just worked. And it worked GREAT, a-la Apple.

What the heck has they done to break such a great feature and why aren't they fixing it ASAP goes beyond any kind of mystery, unless a former Microsoft programmer has taken lead of the iOS development team.
