Guys, hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you need to read and digest this.
I have been dealing with this problem for just under 1 Year. Now, I realize you are saying huh - 1 year?
The truth is this has been an issue with the iPad Air 128GB, iOS 7 and large numbers of apps.
I loaded the iPad Air 128GB iOS 7 originally with around 900 apps in early November 2013. Every so often I would get random reboots, exactly as described in this thread.
As I closed in on 1000 apps, the sudden reboots got worse and worse. Around Christmas I took the iPad Air to the Genius Bar, they examined the diagnostic log and saw all the reboots and replaced it.
The replacement unit was just as bad….but I just lived with it.
As the apps grew, it got worse and more frequent.
By September, at over 1350 apps it was constantly rebooting, usually within 5 minutes or less. I could take it no more. I was about to replace it, but then iOS 8.0 came out. I knew they would suggest I upgrade from iOS 7 to iOS 8 and see if that would solve the issue – so that is what I did. After replacing iOS7 with iOS8, it started rebooting within 30 seconds to 2 minutes at the longest. iOS 8 was making it worse, but the problem started with iOS 7 (if not before).
I should note that I have an iPhone 5 (not s) 64GB with iOS 7 and then iOS 8.02 (now 8.1) and ALL THE SAME APPS AND FOLDERS ON THE SAME PAGES AS FOUND ON iPAD AIR and no issues.
I took it with me on Sept 19 (iPhone 6 launch day) to exchange. Genius Bar saw it reboot when I tried to move a folder from one page to another. They replaced it.
Restored from iCloud Backup. Same issues. Called Apple. They suggested I restore from iTunes Backup on Computer. I did, same issues.
Called Apple again. They said my backups were obviously damaged and to restore from scratch. I knew the likelyhood of this happening to all backups done at different times to iCloud and iTunes were nil to none (and as I had to upgrade it to iOS 8 to restore, which was causing more frequent reboots), I took it back and exchanged it once again (this was 3rd replacement) so I would be back on iOS 7, because as bad as it is on iOS 7, it is worse on iOS 8.
I then did the painstaking effort of restoring as new. I did not even start a single non-system App. It crashed several times during the reinstall. Called Apple. They took diagnostic log and saw that it was all Systems files that were crashing (because I NEVER started another app that was not a system App).
They promised they would elevate this to Engineering. I offered to send them my iPad Air with apps installed so they could trouble shoot it in the lab if they would send me a replacement. I even said they could use my iCloud backup and restore themselves. I was promised by a Senior Advisor I would be contacted back within 24 hours.
5 Days went by and no response from Apple. So I took it in and replaced it again. I thought after enough replacements they would begin to see a pattern and do something. There was a note in the system from Engineering they found at the Genius Bar. Not only had they not taken me up on my offer to take in the iPad as is, their solution was to reinstall every app 1 by 1 until I figured out myself which “app” was causing the issue. In other words, they were going to do nothing and wanted me to troubleshoot the problem. Of course, they never relayed that to me. So I had Genius Bar replace yet again.
Restored it again from scratch. Same issues. As I added more apps that brought it closer to 1450, everything started going south. Letters on the Keyboard disappeared. Folder Outlines on the Home Screen disappeared. Icons started randomly changing among all programs (or not showing up at all). System Functions such as a screenshot would not work. Everything would come back after a reboot. But of course, the system would reboot all the time by itself.
So I then again took it to the Genius Bar and showed them the “new app icons” for many of Apple’s apps. They laughed, tried to run a diagnostic but could not, because it kept rebooting. Replaced again. I have lost count how many replacements I have had for an iPad
Again, I did not want to upgrade this to iOS 8.1 as my past testing showed iOS 8.1 made the problem even more frequent. So after 1 year of not having a stable iPad – only one that had less stability than the 25 year old Windows 3.0, I decided I would take the new replacement iPad, still in plastic, and sell it on eBay and take the financial loss just to be done with it.
But then the article came out on Business Insider, sourcing Apple Insider that the SAME THING was happening to iPhones 6+ with 128GB and large number of apps. Clearly, this was too much of a coincidence to be ignored (and considering I was about to purchase an iPhone 6 Plus 128GB to replace my iPhone 5 64GB) So I took the time to call Apple back once again.
I was now convinced the number of Apps combined with 128GB was the issue, even though they worked on a 64GB iphone. Again, though it is worse on iOS 8, it is also an issue on iOS 7. I suspect that very few had an iPad Air 128GB with 1,000+ apps. Now as the iPhone is available with 128GB, more are seeing the issue - and thus the thread here.
My original question was “How many Apps can an Apple Device Have loaded”? I had Googled it with no results. But clearly I thought there had to be a limit, because all signs pointed to that being the case. Several Apple techs told me there was no limit, one can add as many as you have physical memory for.
I then elevated to Senior Tech Skyler B. She looked over the notes and all the returns and exchanges, forwarded her the BI and AI articles – and I pointed out that as this was first time iPhones had 128GB (and iPad Air was first with 128GB). Stated these coincidences were too much to be ignored. She agreed. She claimed she was like “Sherlock Holmes”, loved mysteries, had worked at Apple for over 5 years and had authority to interface with any department to get this solved. She agreed with me that it seemed the connection between my issue and the issues on this tread were probably related. As thus solving this, should, in theory, solve the iPhone 6 128GB issue.
I spent 2 hours on the phone with her, she took all the pictures I sent her (see photos below) AND I went through a procedure to give Engineering access to my backups on iCloud, which involved a number of items, from changing passwords to a temp engineering password etc. This was a Friday (10/24), she promised I would get a phone call back on Monday (10/27)at 7PM ET, which would give Engineering time to download my iCloud backup and see for themselves what was going on in their labs.
Monday came and went. I sent an email and noted that all Senior Advisors talk a big game on the phone, yet none of them call back when they claim they will. She replied saying she got sick on Monday (yet apparently could not notify me, even though we had a set appointment time for her to call).
On Tuesday 10/28 she notified me that Engineering wanted me to restore the backup on my iPad Air (for the 20th time). I told her I refused as I had given them access to my iCloud Account (taking 20-30 minutes of my time with her Friday to setup). She claimed that I had to do it and if they did it on a machine, it would not have all the same info.
I told her that is ridiculous, if I restored from iCloud in Florida or they restored from my iCloud account in California, the hardware did not care where it physically was during the install.
She insisted that is what Engineering wanted. I then told her I would restore the iPad Air if and only if Apple sent me a new iPad Air 2 128GB and I would send my restored iPad Air in return to them to troubleshoot. As I had gone a year without a working machine, had done multiple replacements and this would had gone way past any Automobile Lemon Law in the United States, not to mention the over 400 hours I had spent on this when I included all the restores, I did not think this was unreasonable.
Considering this is the root of ALL 128GB (iphones and iPad stability and rebooting issues) and they would have had a unit showing all the issues in hand, I still do not think this is unreasonable.
They flat out refused. And since I refused to restore the unit (instead of them) and do their work for them, they closed the case.
In the past I have not taken to public forums to solve issues. I have found I have gotten much further by not posting online and throwing gas on the fire.
But it is obvious to me that Apple is going to do nothing to solve this issue.
I find it close to Fraud that they are not warning people of issues with high numbers of Apps. The fact that I have spent over $600+ on iTunes Apps as well with no indication I could not keep these all loaded (especially if I paid extra for the physical memory) pushes it over the line.
And even worse, it appears I am stuck with an iPhone 5 or an Android. God knows what I will do for a tablet.
I wish you the best in your efforts, but it is clear Apple is turning a deaf ear.
Like the new iTunes Store Icon? CBS, Sirius/XM and 7-11 love theirs as well!
Folders outline disappear:
Nice Keyboard as well.
Hope you have a good memory:
Remember when icons actually had pictures on them?
BTW, these were taken with iOS 7 installed, so the keyboard issue is in NO WAY related to the new Keyboard Features of iOS 8.
