iPhone 6 Plus Keeps Crashing PLEASE HELP!

I am a huge Apple fan, so I ask this question wishing and hoping my iPhone 6 Plus would just perform the way I know it should be.

Since restoring from my old iPhone 5S backup onto my 6 Plus 128GB (AT&T) running iOS 8.0, my 6 Plus is laggy (animations are very slow and stutter), freezy (after hitting "done" it often freezes for a good five seconds before registering the click), buggy (the keyboard sometimes doesn't appear at all, the "halos" around the folders on the home screen sometimes appear and sometimes don't, seems totally arbitrary), and crashy (whenever doing certain tasks like fast app switching, trying to change wallpaper, and others, the phone crashes, turns off the radios, then shows the Apple screen before rebooting). The crashing is happening once every five to ten minutes, making the phone VERY FRUSTRATING TO USE.

I have tried manually restarting the phone, HOME + SLEEP reset to the Apple screen, and restoring again...My next step is a factory reset and manual reinstallation of all my apps again, which is making me sick just thinking about it...

All of these things scream SOFTWARE to me, but what do I know...is anyone else experiencing these issues on the 6 Plus? Should I just be waiting for an OS update, or did I just get a lemon phone? As I said, I love Apple, and this is not a post to flame (so please save your "Go buy an Android" for someone who cares). I just want my shiny new phone to work!!! Any help is appreciated.

  5. See all your Crash Data History!

***Seems like the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus with approximately 50GB used
seems to Delay, Missing Icon images, Crash and such Issues are related to lack
cache and of RAM (1GB) = Memory!

What is RAM?

Random Access Memory(RAM) is a way for your computer to store temporary data that it is likely to need soon.
Other ways that computers store data are through a cache or storage. Storage,
often wrongly referred to as memory, is permanent data stored on a hard drive
or solid state drive. A CPU cache is a small amount of memory that is stored
right on the CPU chip. The cache is for data that is used very frequently. Both
the RAM and CPU cache are temporary data stores that are cleared when your
computer is turned off.

You could think of the cache as apaper in your hand that you need to constantly refer to, such as a list of
names or zip codes. The folder, laying on your desk, full of papers you may
need for your current task is similar to computer memory or RAM. The file
cabinet full of folders for all your projects would be a good parallel to
computer storage such as a hard drive.

Memory problems are less common than many other computer problems because memory sticks have no moving parts so
have fewer points of failure. However, due to this many RAM problems are
misdiagnosed. Memory usually will last longer than other computer components so
manufacturers offer warranties longer than most other computer parts. If you
buy brand name memory it will likely have a lifetime warranty.

Symptoms of a RAM problem

  1. 1. You turn
on your computer and it runs fine. You go about your normal tasks and notice
that your computer performance decreases. By lunch time the load times of a
typical website seem to be measured in minutes. Does the problem occur not just
with internet websites, but also with running local programs? This type of
gradual deterioration of PC performance, especially with memory intensive
programs, may be caused by a RAM problem.
  2. 2. Does your computer restart randomly when you are in the middle of something? Your
computer may just have booted and begins to load your desktop and then
immediately reboots. It may freeze up sporadically. This could be a sign of
    faulty RAM.
  3. 3. Your screen flashes a blue screen with white text before restarting. Blue Screen
errors can be one of the most annoying things to happen to your computer
because you don't have a chance to read the error message. Many things can
cause this problem and bad memory is one of them.
  4. 4. Have you found that files are randomly corrupted? This may happen with files that you
frequently access and save. RAM issues can cause this problem or worse. The
file structure of your hard drive may slowly go downhill and become unbootable.
  5. 5. Your attempts to install a new program repeatedly fail for an unknown reason. Could
be a RAM problem. You try to reinstall the operating system, but keep getting
odd error messages. If this follows number four above, it is almost a sure sign
    of bad memory.

There are certainly a variety of problems that could cause the issues above, but faulty RAM is often overlooked.
If you have combinations of the above problems it is likely you have faulty
memory.

Signs & Symptoms of Low Working Memory

Computers normally use RAM (random access memory) to run
applications and programs. If RAM is low and there is not enough working memory
to run all the programs on the system, a computer will display certain signs.
Normally, low working memory results in slower applications, slow response time
or results in the computer freezing. Each program on a computer requires a
certain amount of RAM to run correctly. If you are using multiple programs or
applications at once, there may not be enough RAM to run all the applications.

Unresponsive Programs

If programs become unresponsive, then the working memory may be
low. Multiple open applications and programs will become unresponsive and
freeze if run at the same time, as low working memory cannot cope when running
several programs at once. In some cases, programs may crash the entire system
and cause the computer to freeze.

Graphic Display

  • In some cases the graphics on the computer may become
"pixelated." For example, the Desktop may appear discolored and icons
may become abnormally large due to low work memory or other memory errors.
Parts of programs or applications may seem to "disappear" or windows
may not open when clicked. When an application or program freezes, it often
display blank white spaces in certain parts of the application. If this occurs
frequently, the working memory of the computer may be low.

I too have a similar issue with my 6 plus. Apps are constantly crashing. I'll be using them and then it just returns to the home screen. Not sure if I should wait for an IOS update (I figured there are always bugs to work out) but I asked my friend who has an iPhone 5 if he's been having issues with IOS 8 and he said no. So I'm wondering if it's limited to my phone model or just my phone.

Sep 22, 2014 10:47 PM in response to legalepa

HI. just want you to know that I am also have similar issues, but mostly and very annoyingly, with my Notification Center. Every time I am using my phone and I receive a notification on the top and I drag it away it just gets stuck up there and doesnt leave unless I press the home button. I also experience lags and front camera problems from time to time.

hope this help.

iphone 6 plus, ios8

I'be been an iPhone user since day one (2007)... I'm also an iOS developer. I know these devices pretty well. (-:

I too have 6+ 128gb (GSM) and experiencing siimilar issues. I'll also report that my phone "dies" like the battery is dead around 7% and won't show the battery dead graphic when try to power back on (plugging in to power does show the battery though). Clearly ios 8 still needs some work for the 6+. Don't think it has anything to with restoring from a backup from computer or iCloud (I started with a fresh, factory setup and have the same/similar problems). So don't waste your time restoring your phone over and over in frustration. I'm afraid our only solution is to wait for an iOS update. I'm sure apple is working their hardest to fix this Asap. I've had every iPhone version in the past, and there is always a period where this sort of thing happens. Hold tight. Most issues will go away by 2nd or 3rd ios update. It's irritating and inconvievent, but it's the pruce of admission for being the first to own a new version of hardware.

Oh.. I am not alone. I am now in HK and had the same issue. The 6+ 128Gb phone will suddenly reboot and the rainbow colour showed on the screen... cannot switch off, finally, it back to apple logo and display the log....

Afterward, went to HK apple shop, they exchange another iPhone to me. It is 3 days already, using same apps, and not issue now. Hope that crash will not be happened again.

Guys, hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you need to read and digest this.

I have been dealing with this problem for just under 1 Year. Now, I realize you are saying huh - 1 year?

The truth is this has been an issue with the iPad Air 128GB, iOS 7 and large numbers of apps.

I loaded the iPad Air 128GB iOS 7 originally with around 900 apps in early November 2013. Every so often I would get random reboots, exactly as described in this thread.

As I closed in on 1000 apps, the sudden reboots got worse and worse. Around Christmas I took the iPad Air to the Genius Bar, they examined the diagnostic log and saw all the reboots and replaced it.

The replacement unit was just as bad….but I just lived with it.

As the apps grew, it got worse and more frequent.

By September, at over 1350 apps it was constantly rebooting, usually within 5 minutes or less. I could take it no more. I was about to replace it, but then iOS 8.0 came out. I knew they would suggest I upgrade from iOS 7 to iOS 8 and see if that would solve the issue – so that is what I did. After replacing iOS7 with iOS8, it started rebooting within 30 seconds to 2 minutes at the longest. iOS 8 was making it worse, but the problem started with iOS 7 (if not before).

I should note that I have an iPhone 5 (not s) 64GB with iOS 7 and then iOS 8.02 (now 8.1) and ALL THE SAME APPS AND FOLDERS ON THE SAME PAGES AS FOUND ON iPAD AIR and no issues.

I took it with me on Sept 19 (iPhone 6 launch day) to exchange. Genius Bar saw it reboot when I tried to move a folder from one page to another. They replaced it.

Restored from iCloud Backup. Same issues. Called Apple. They suggested I restore from iTunes Backup on Computer. I did, same issues.

Called Apple again. They said my backups were obviously damaged and to restore from scratch. I knew the likelyhood of this happening to all backups done at different times to iCloud and iTunes were nil to none (and as I had to upgrade it to iOS 8 to restore, which was causing more frequent reboots), I took it back and exchanged it once again (this was 3rd replacement) so I would be back on iOS 7, because as bad as it is on iOS 7, it is worse on iOS 8.

I then did the painstaking effort of restoring as new. I did not even start a single non-system App. It crashed several times during the reinstall. Called Apple. They took diagnostic log and saw that it was all Systems files that were crashing (because I NEVER started another app that was not a system App).

They promised they would elevate this to Engineering. I offered to send them my iPad Air with apps installed so they could trouble shoot it in the lab if they would send me a replacement. I even said they could use my iCloud backup and restore themselves. I was promised by a Senior Advisor I would be contacted back within 24 hours.

5 Days went by and no response from Apple. So I took it in and replaced it again. I thought after enough replacements they would begin to see a pattern and do something. There was a note in the system from Engineering they found at the Genius Bar. Not only had they not taken me up on my offer to take in the iPad as is, their solution was to reinstall every app 1 by 1 until I figured out myself which “app” was causing the issue. In other words, they were going to do nothing and wanted me to troubleshoot the problem. Of course, they never relayed that to me. So I had Genius Bar replace yet again.

Restored it again from scratch. Same issues. As I added more apps that brought it closer to 1450, everything started going south. Letters on the Keyboard disappeared. Folder Outlines on the Home Screen disappeared. Icons started randomly changing among all programs (or not showing up at all). System Functions such as a screenshot would not work. Everything would come back after a reboot. But of course, the system would reboot all the time by itself.

So I then again took it to the Genius Bar and showed them the “new app icons” for many of Apple’s apps. They laughed, tried to run a diagnostic but could not, because it kept rebooting. Replaced again. I have lost count how many replacements I have had for an iPad

Again, I did not want to upgrade this to iOS 8.1 as my past testing showed iOS 8.1 made the problem even more frequent. So after 1 year of not having a stable iPad – only one that had less stability than the 25 year old Windows 3.0, I decided I would take the new replacement iPad, still in plastic, and sell it on eBay and take the financial loss just to be done with it.

But then the article came out on Business Insider, sourcing Apple Insider that the SAME THING was happening to iPhones 6+ with 128GB and large number of apps. Clearly, this was too much of a coincidence to be ignored (and considering I was about to purchase an iPhone 6 Plus 128GB to replace my iPhone 5 64GB) So I took the time to call Apple back once again.

I was now convinced the number of Apps combined with 128GB was the issue, even though they worked on a 64GB iphone. Again, though it is worse on iOS 8, it is also an issue on iOS 7. I suspect that very few had an iPad Air 128GB with 1,000+ apps. Now as the iPhone is available with 128GB, more are seeing the issue - and thus the thread here.

My original question was “How many Apps can an Apple Device Have loaded”? I had Googled it with no results. But clearly I thought there had to be a limit, because all signs pointed to that being the case. Several Apple techs told me there was no limit, one can add as many as you have physical memory for.

I then elevated to Senior Tech Skyler B. She looked over the notes and all the returns and exchanges, forwarded her the BI and AI articles – and I pointed out that as this was first time iPhones had 128GB (and iPad Air was first with 128GB). Stated these coincidences were too much to be ignored. She agreed. She claimed she was like “Sherlock Holmes”, loved mysteries, had worked at Apple for over 5 years and had authority to interface with any department to get this solved. She agreed with me that it seemed the connection between my issue and the issues on this tread were probably related. As thus solving this, should, in theory, solve the iPhone 6 128GB issue.

I spent 2 hours on the phone with her, she took all the pictures I sent her (see photos below) AND I went through a procedure to give Engineering access to my backups on iCloud, which involved a number of items, from changing passwords to a temp engineering password etc. This was a Friday (10/24), she promised I would get a phone call back on Monday (10/27)at 7PM ET, which would give Engineering time to download my iCloud backup and see for themselves what was going on in their labs.

Monday came and went. I sent an email and noted that all Senior Advisors talk a big game on the phone, yet none of them call back when they claim they will. She replied saying she got sick on Monday (yet apparently could not notify me, even though we had a set appointment time for her to call).

On Tuesday 10/28 she notified me that Engineering wanted me to restore the backup on my iPad Air (for the 20th time). I told her I refused as I had given them access to my iCloud Account (taking 20-30 minutes of my time with her Friday to setup). She claimed that I had to do it and if they did it on a machine, it would not have all the same info.

I told her that is ridiculous, if I restored from iCloud in Florida or they restored from my iCloud account in California, the hardware did not care where it physically was during the install.

She insisted that is what Engineering wanted. I then told her I would restore the iPad Air if and only if Apple sent me a new iPad Air 2 128GB and I would send my restored iPad Air in return to them to troubleshoot. As I had gone a year without a working machine, had done multiple replacements and this would had gone way past any Automobile Lemon Law in the United States, not to mention the over 400 hours I had spent on this when I included all the restores, I did not think this was unreasonable.

Considering this is the root of ALL 128GB (iphones and iPad stability and rebooting issues) and they would have had a unit showing all the issues in hand, I still do not think this is unreasonable.

They flat out refused. And since I refused to restore the unit (instead of them) and do their work for them, they closed the case.

In the past I have not taken to public forums to solve issues. I have found I have gotten much further by not posting online and throwing gas on the fire.

But it is obvious to me that Apple is going to do nothing to solve this issue.

I find it close to Fraud that they are not warning people of issues with high numbers of Apps. The fact that I have spent over $600+ on iTunes Apps as well with no indication I could not keep these all loaded (especially if I paid extra for the physical memory) pushes it over the line.

And even worse, it appears I am stuck with an iPhone 5 or an Android. God knows what I will do for a tablet.

I wish you the best in your efforts, but it is clear Apple is turning a deaf ear.

This has nothing to do with your Phone having larger memory.I have an iPhone 6 Plus 16GB,i do not have more than 20 apps in my phone and i have been having the same problems as everyone else here since Apple released iOS 8.1

My 16 gb iPhone 6 Plus was working just perfect until this update and since then i started experiencing random restarts (crashes) but it didn't happen a lot so i simply ignored these as i was sure Apple would fix them in the patch. And then came 8.1.1 when things started to get worse.Crashes, restarts happening almost everyday, blue screen, red screen, white screen, screen with vertical and horizontal pillars appearing etc. and since today,my phone just switches off and i can't power it back on unless i connect it to my Mac.Then it comes back on,i restore it to its original settings, phone works normal for several minutes and then shuts down again.

Oh,and also today i had a screen like this on my 6 plus.It is a Panic problem and a message reads;Panic...we are hanging here!

User uploaded file

So do not assume this happens only with 6 Plus 128 Gb devices.I will definitely return this phone to my service provider.I will probably have to wait 30 days to receive a replacement (if i would ever)..I only use Apple devices;Macs,iPhones,iPads,a Time Capsule but this iOS 8 is a complete disgrace i can't believe how Apple treats us loyal customers like this.Yes i will dare say Had Steve Been alive, things would have been different

Nov 4, 2014 3:57 PM in response to FLBeachComber

I agree, if lots of apps is the cause* then boot RAM measurement, and boot time (since that might include some processing of each app/each icon) are good clues to test.

Also: this thread lists the specific symptoms (including several 64GB owners) that I'm talking about:

iPhone 6 Plus Crashing (a lot)

* Tons of apps need not be the culprit in ALL cases, if RAM is the root cause: there are other ways RAM can get used up.

P.S. Something I'm testing (along with Zoom mode) to see if it helps any: using the same wallpaper for both Lock and Home (using the Set Both button); and at the same time turning off wallpaper perspective (since that would call for a larger-than-screen-sized image to be kept in memory). I'm also using a solid color, but that probably doesn't make much difference.

Meanwhile, Zoom does seem to help a bit. Any other RAM-saving tips (fewer background services?) might be useful too--at least for now.

I very much HOPE that after a patch is applied, RAM will not be so tight. It's possible for a mobile OS to run nicely on 1GB (like iOS 7 on iPhone 5... and unlike Android which is much more RAM sensitive). I hope that despite the Plus's larger screen, this issue can be corrected. If not, then maybe the Plus NEEDED 2GB of RAM and didn't get it. Too soon to say that, though--I think a software fix will come. I just hope it's soon! If I can have stability, without wasting battery on 2GB of RAM, I'd be OK with that.

Dec 9, 2014 6:36 AM in response to legalepa

So made another appointment with the Apple store, finally talked to someone who was aware of the issue and this thread. As they told others here, he said I would have to do a restore and setup the phone as new. He actually experienced the issue himself with his wife and she had to do same thing. He also pointed me to another thread iOS 7.1 and iPhone 4/4s - corrupt system file or incapacitating passcode bug?

I ran a restores from 8.0 - 8.2 but always either used iCloud or my Mac to restore my settings.

Although it was an extreme pain I lost a day restoring and individually downloding all the apps. Installing each from the appstore might have been overkill, but wanted as new phone. He might have been right. I did the restore Friday and no reboots as of today. I installed 906 apps as well just to see if I can crash it and still running strong.

Personally there might be two issues going on in this thread. I have never experienced a red screen or a hard reboot. My 6+ would respring various times. Switching apps mostly. I get the black screen and back to lockscreen. Would happen constantly on standard mode. Maybe 2-3x a day when on zoomed.

Folder Icons would lose the frame. Sometimes keyboard comes up with clear keys.

The red screen reboots might be a hardware issue, but I personally would try setting the phone up as new and leave the basic apps to see if it's happening, then perhaps start adding little by little.

If it also helps, I installed crash reporter prior to restoring. I was getting springboard error 109. The same as in the other thread I posted here in which that person solved the issue restoring as new.

I know it's a pain, but that might be the only solution for now.
